Yo, guys --

Some time back, I was experimenting around with low hills and small mountains (I eventually settled on low hills) and spent a couple of weeks making and remaking the scene until I finally got pretty much what I wanted.  I then went to work on another map as a change of pace.  (I do that a lot -- fix something -- leave it for a while -- then come back and reevaluate the results.)

These are a low to medium range of hills surrounding the Cuxhaven harbor.  My main focus was on exactly how they should be landscaped.  I spent a couple of days browsing a lot of CJ entries and finally found inspiration (Eureka !!) in @The British Sausage CJ.  I am very pleased with the appearance -- and next to sand dunes -- this is the hardest landscaping job I've done in a long, long, time.  Many thanks to "British Sausage" for his advice and, most especially, for the landscape "art" in his CJ.

This is an excellent reason why people should post CJ's -- they inspire us all to be better than we are !!

To be even more on the somewhat safer side...

Humor aside, those are wonderful hills, and I am glad you didn't try to force development over them.  My personal tendencies are to treat hills as sacred sites that become natural landmarks in a city and/or as natural barriers that break up the city.

This might be a good point to point a map making issue I haven't seen mentioned anywhere but which has consumed my playtime this past week:  cast high mountain shadows in region view...

Here is the Matterhorn, the famous pyramidal peak of the Pennine Alps, on a large city tile on the edge of a region I have been calling Greater Turin:

Unfortunately, the shadows on the right-hand side face of the Matterhorn and within left-hand side inner wall of the Val d'Ayas are clipped.  

This clipping occurs because there is a seam between city tiles in the region view.  Each city tile is rendered independently, and so shadowing that may be created in one city tile is not carried over into its neighboring city tiles.  As the region view is a composite of all the individually rendered city tile images, these differences in shadowing can appear.

We can see that on the right hand side of the Matterhorn, the shadow cast by the mountain ends at the yellow-bordered edge of the large city tile.

Rearranging the layout of city tiles in the config.bmp can cover the span of expected shadows and minimize the jarring effects of such compositing quirks.

A subtle effect, but now the Matterhorn's shadow stretches down almost have the length of a large tile and definitely reinforces its pyramidal shape.

A little more troublesome have been city tile seams becoming too glaringly apparent when they cut across white snow at high elevations.  I've been juggling config.bmp puzzles in order to eliminate clipped shadows and minimize glaring seams.  Or course, I also had to arrange tiles to conveniently match where significant settlements and human structures are as well.

 

It doesn't help that SC4 Mapper's placeholder city tile renders have a fixed sizes that are too short for the maps possible with 16-bit elevation data.  This results in placeholder render clipping, which can be fixed by properly rendering the city tile within SimCity 4.  My Monte Rosa placeholder region map looks like this:

Note the yellow horizontal sliver--that is a clickable part of a clipped placeholder render of medium city tile.  Properly rendering it out in SimCity 4 brings this:

I've learned the hard way when fixing these SC4 Mapper placeholder renders to do so from back to front, particularly with medium and small city tiles, as rendering tiles in front first may inadvertently cover over the clickable slivers of any clipped tiles behind and make them permanently unselectable in region view.

That's is a lot of visual clutter to sort through, but below is the Monte Rosa massif before my little corrections...

...and now below is the Monte Rosa massif with clipped placeholders completely rendered and most clipped shadows removed:

There is still one clipped shadow remaining in the scene above which I couldn't fix without creating new seams with even worse shadow clipping elsewhere.  Hopefully, it is not that noticeable.

 

Lastly, here is a teaser of Greater Turin, a 30 x 46 large tile region largely covering to accurate scale much of Italy's Piedmont region, with the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa at the topmost corner:

In order to find clipped shadows, I had to manually render all the mountainous tiles, so this view is from before my fixes to the config.bmp.  These were rendered using the Berner Oberland Terrain Mod by Gobias, with some tweaks to the snowline and treeline.

And that final image is just mindboggling. The Matterhorn looks minuscule there in its corner!

Work with the shadows off, save with the shadows on. Gives your region shot more depth. You can tell where I forgot to, in the following pic.
