City-building game(s)

  1. Apologies if this is in the wrong section; I wasn't sure if this was better suited for this forum or the custom content forum, but decided on this one since the game crashing is my ultimate problem. I should also note that prior to posting this, I searched several threads throughout Simtropolis, Reddit and the Steam forums and was not able to resolve my issue. I recently decided to try datpacking some of my files to make the game run faster. I followed this tutorial to datpack my lots only. A few notes on how I went through this process: After taking these steps, I tried loading my game. The game loaded quickly, but when I try to open a city tile the game crashes during loading. Some initial googling suggested the issue was the 4GB patch not being applied to SimCity4.exe. I thought this was something I had already done since I thought it was a requirement for NAM, but I figured I'd try reapplying it anyway. So I downloaded the 4GB patch from the NTcore site and navigated to where I expected my game's .exe to be on my computer (I have a 64-bit Windows 11 PC and am using the Steam version of the game, so the location should be C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Apps.) I am only showing the SimCity 4 Application file (which I understand to be the same thing as .exe). But whenever I try to apply the patch I get the error message "Couldn't open executable", leading me to believe I'm not doing something right. Edit: I was able to apply the 4GB patch, but the game is still crashing whenever I open it and try to load a city tile. So my questions are as follows: 1. Besides updating the 4GB patch, what other issues could be causing the game to crash after datpacking? 2. Regarding datpacking, is there a problem with me packaging BATs only without their respective dependencies? I'm not sure if this would be a cause for the game crashes but figure it's still worth asking. Thanks for your help!
  2. Not sure what is causing this issue since I normally play with mods and all of a sudden, the game keeps crashing while loading/starting a new region. I have tried verifying file integrity, 4gb patch, and still no luck in getting a region to load up. Not sure what is causing this and have not found a solution to this. Has anyone had the same problem or know how to fix this? I am running Windows 10
  3. So... as the title says, I can't use custom buildings in the game. The first time I import a building into SimCity 3000 it works fine, but after that it just... stops working. The second time the game crashes, and when I re-open it the "Edit List" feature doesn't let me import anything, and all I'm left with is a blank list of buildings and greyed out options seen in the screenshot below. And on top of that, the Building Architect outright refuses to open now. It straight up does not work. It doesn't even crash when I open it, nothing happens when I try to. I've tried everything: reinstalling it, running as admin, nothing has worked. If it helps, I'm using the Unlimited version on Steam, running on Windows 11.
  4. As a foreword: New to Simtropolis and new to SimCity 4 modding I'm trying to get back into SC4 and a few days ago I thought I had stuff figured out. Downloaded the critical mods from the Ulisse Wolf list (the 4gb patch which I ran on the SimCity 4 .exe which I have via Steam, SC4CPU Options, SC4Graphics Options, SC4Fix, SC4Autosave, Startup Performance Optimization DLL), downloaded sc4pac to help with adding some stuff and downloaded the essential fixes from there (at least I think I did). Downloaded NAM and BSC and all of the dependencies. I'm loaded into the tutorial region, no hassles. I run through the tutorials, even play on the Making Money tutorial city for a bit. Only issue I ever experienced was that there was a weird visual glitch. Lines would pop up if you looked somewhere that was out of your view based on your zoom level or you'd get a repeated image effect that you could undo if you zoomed or rotated the camera. I can only think it might be because I deleted the backgrounds and I don't know if that breaks anything (keeping them or deleting them doesn't change anything in if it loads/doesn't, for the record) I don't particularly know what to do. I can only upload my two plugin folders and my sc4pac command line to give some info. I'm completely lost and don't know if I should just completely nuke and reinstall everything manually. If I do have to reinstall manually, how can I make sure everything stays stable.
  5. Hello, all. I've been trying to get a bunch of older games running on my laptop, and SimCity 4 is simultaneously probably the best-supported and the most annoying to deal with (it's why we love it...) Anyhoo, every time I load up the game, it gets through the intros and straight to the splash screen, then promptly crashes/closes with no errors or anything else. The logs are very technical (and I have an IT certificate.) I should be able to get this old beast running but something about it all is eluding me... I have the 4gb patch, NAM, SC4Fix, and SC4GraphicsOptions installed on an otherwise fresh Steam install. It worked flawlessly on my old Windows 10 laptop but it simply refuses to get to the actual "game" part of the game lol. I've even tried switching between my two graphics adapters (onboard graphics and dedicated graphics). I've tried every command line hook I can, every compatibility setting... nothing works. Has anyone else had this problem? I can provide logs if needed. System Specs: ROG Strix Gaming Laptop Windows 11 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-12900H 2.50 GHz 16gb RAM Nvidia Geforce RTX 3070ti laptop GPU (main graphics card) Intel Iris Xe Graphics (onboard card)
  6. Hi, it's been a while since I've posted on these forums (15+ years?). The new dll mods look amazing, especially the camera and growify mods. But, I can't seem to get them to work. I'm pretty sure the .dlls aren't loading at all. The Buggi cheats and SC4Fix load and work fine, but the camera mod, SC4Growify, SC4Autosave, SC4DisableDemolitionAnimation, SC4DisableLotPlopSmoke don't do anything and don't write log files, which I'm guessing means they aren't loading. Does anyone know if there is something I could be overlooking, or is there a reason why SC4Fix and the Buggi cheats load but the other ones don't? My SimCity version is 1.1.641.0 (from GOG). I'm running a pretty standard, ordinary Windows 10 machine. All .dll files are in the install plugins (C:\Maxis\Plugins\ in my case). I'm normally using dxwrapper, but I removed it and all other .dlls, so there were no other .dlls in either of my plugins or Apps folders which could conflict with these files, and it made no difference. Anyway, keep up the great work. It's looking like the game is really evolving.
  7. Olympic Tree Controler

No matter what I do I cannot fill the bald spots on the edges of the tiles. I used Flora Blast but then I tried to fill in the spots with the God Mode tree tool and I only get shrubs in those spots. The terrain is completely flat and the edges are reconciled. I've tried everything I can think of to get ride of them. IDK if this is happening because of Olympic Tree Mod or if the Vanilla code would do the same thing but I'm super OCD so this is a problem for me. Any Ideas? The Mod is great by the way just FYI.
  8. So I did a system restart with Windows 11 and to my amazement all my cities were still there and intact! The game loads fine until I try to load a city and the game crashes. My next step is to go and delete ALL my mods and start from scratch but I don't want to do that. If someone has been through this help me!!!! Im having withdrawals. I think it has something to do with the screen resolution, but idk. Any info is helpful dont be shy now.
  9. Help Troubleshooting City of 80k

I’m having quite a frustrating problem(s) with a city of 80k people. I will try to explain the problem(s) as linearly as possible. I’m having trouble precisely and concisely articulating the problem b/c it’s not clear at all what even I think the causes are, so please bear with me as I state the problem(s) I perceive as if I were trying to think it through. Will attempt to summarize all of this in a TLDR at the bottom. I would like as much as possible to at least eliminate enough of the problem(s) so that I can continue with this region and the 80k city especially; I do not want to start over. As you’ll see, there is a high demand for R$ & R$$ type buildings. It’s so high, actually, that R$ is as absolutely high as the demand graph can visually show, and R$$ demand is very close to being visually maxed too; with that high of a demand, I’d instantly skyscrapers would instantly develop—in explosive fashion. However, the only actively developing residence type is R$$$, and R$$$ type buildings instantly appear as soon as there is even slight demand for it. If I can get R$$$ to develop with little to no effort, surely the reason why such high demand for R$ & R$$$ will not be as easily satisfied cannot be b/c of desirability deficiencies alone. IF R$$$ buildings easily develop, desirability factors can’t be deficient enough to halt development of R$ & R$$. There are only a few reasons I can not think of that would explain this strange phenomena, but I don’t know how to test them. I’m first asking for advice on how to diagnose the problem. I ask this first, and now I explain what I think some of the following causes of this halt in development of R$ & R$$ buildings are that I’m asking for help to diagnose. Lack of jobs Poor transportation Desirability Taxes Infinite Commuter loop (I’ll get to this) I’m pulling my hair out as I try to determine the cause of the perceived problem. As I was testing to see if job availability is at least one cause of R$ & R$$ buildings not developing, I zoned I-D, as I knew that my demand for I-D was very high and lack of I-D jobs may explain why at least the R$ demand cannot be satisfied. So I zoned I-D in the same city, and sure enough I began to see R$$ appear in the city (oddly enough, since I expected to see R$ appear). It gets weirder, though. Near a cluster of high-rises, I had a fairly large patch of industrial zone filled exclusively with I-HT. I rezoned this to medium-density residential, and oddly enough the rezoned area began rapidly developing with buildings that could each hold ~100-300 occupants. But then–much of the buildings began to dilapidate and abandon. R$, R$$ & R$$$ alike, all dilapidating and abandoning. And when I’d click on the buildings, explanations for the abandonment was commute time and desirability. This is also not the only city in the region. I have a city of over 100k directly adjacent to it, and two other tiny cities (each lower than 10k pop), each of which connecting to the two big cities. That means that the infinite commuter bug could also be causing the dilapidation, although I have no idea how to see if it’s actually present. TLDR: So, all that said, here is the problem I perceive in as small a nutshell as I can say: R$ & R$$ demand is so high that visually R$ demand completely fills the demand graph and R$$ demand is just a sliver away from also completely filling the graph. But neither develops. And when I rezoned a patch of industrial zone to medium-density residential, many new R$$ (mostly R$$) buildings developed, but much of them quickly began to dilapidate and abandon. I also have more connecting cities in the region, which complicates the matter even more. I have no problem getting every job type to develop; just residential. And, while I can’t imagine that this would cause such massive fluctuations in demand across each city, tax rates are not consistent in every city.
  10. Mac 64-bit Trouble Shooting

Hello everyone. I've been a bit overwhelmed trying to fix my game since it upgraded automatically from 32 to 64 bit without my permission via steam a few months back. Ever since it switched to 64 bit, many mods have become incompatible, ultimately resulting a crash to desktop. I upgraded my NAM to the latest version, which seemed to help a little bit, but i'm still experiencing brown boxes everywhere. I was wondering if any of the mac users on here have had any luck narrowing down the "trouble makers" within the plugin folder, and if anyone has been able to come up with any solutions to these issues.
  11. Hey guys! Need some help with my Traffic Simulator. When I go to change the settings to Medium-High and Ultra, I can't save. I have a GoG version of SimCity4. The NAM(version 36) runs as normal. No issues there. The TSCT also opens and runs as normal. A box pops up saying, "Loaded values from Simulator file" -- NetworkAddonMod_Traffic_Plugin_Z_Medium.dat I click OK and proceed to change the settings to Med-High and Ultra. I go to save, but an error message appears -- Error deleting file(s). SimCity4 is probably runninig. It's not. I've looked through the task manager -- SimCity and no associated programs (GoG) are open. I'm running Windows10, 64bit. I've tries some of the other fixes, like manually deleting the Z_Medium.dat file and then saving, but still no save. I'm a little less inclined to mess with admin functions (the fixes I've seen for that have been in Windows Vista and 7). Any other ideas? PLEASE HELP! Thanks in advance!
  12. NAM 37 on Mac 64 bit OS

How did the installation process go for you? @xxdita in another thread asked for my feedback on the install process/stability, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet; I'm still using a copy of NAM 36.
  13. So people seem to be using the 64-bit version (and running into issues with it). As I've stayed on the 32-bit version for now, I'd like to be able to point people in the direction of other 64 bit users who may be able to help them with their issues with it. So if you're running the 64-bit version and are willing to help answer people's questions about their issues, please comment here, and then people can find you more easily. (Also, I'll add you into my Mac Users 101 file.)
  14. So something’s going wrong with your SimCity 4 install. This is a somewhat common occurrence, as the Mac version hasn't gotten the updates that the Windows version has, and depending on what’s going wrong depends on how to fix it (or even if you can). As someone who’s played the game for more than 15 years (and most of those were on Macs), I’ve seen… well, I’d like to think I’ve seen pretty much every error that can happen with the Mac. Here’s a guide to all the bugs I’ve ever encountered, most common ones first. (This guide is under construction. I will be adding to it in the future.) Note: I haven't gone through the Mac forums to dig up every problem everyone's ever had. There may be bugs covered there that I don't know about. I *can* say that advice for certain issues has changed over the years, and sometimes you get contradicting information. My best advice is to go with the most up-to-date information possible. Also note that this was written for the 32-bit version. The 64-bit version may or may not have the same errors, but has definitely been having its own problems (but since I didn't upgrade, I can't help with that.) 64 Bit users, once you get all the common errors & the kinks worked out on fixing them, I'll add them in here. Weird Loadup Behavior? Not Seeing Your Regions? You've encountered Too Many Files/Folders Bug. @TheDUBSpeedArts writes: On startup, I am greeted by an empty region with no cities, no text anywhere (even the menus), and a constantly vibrating screen. The region list is empty, and attempting to create a new one crashes the game. New folders have been created in the regions folder bearing the name timbuktu with increasingly higher numbers. The game also skips all intros except the Maxis and SimCity 4 splash screens. This is the most common (but not only) behavior for the “too many files/folders” bug. It's a known issue that if there's too many files in the Plugins directory (and each folder counts as 1 file with this bug), weird things happen with loadup. We're talking hundreds or thousands of files+folders. (And with a nesting file & folder structure, it's easy for this to happen, multiple times even.) This, with the transit bug & the night lighting bug, is the most common bug people come across when playing SC4 with custom content. Luckily, there’s 2 easy fixes for it, and 1 that's more involved (but you should do anyway.) Anytime you have problems with loadup or regions/maps (and you haven't recently installed a new map), or if you have issues with it slowing down so much it's unplayable, this should be the issue you should suspect first. Fix #0: Cleaning up your folders. This is the more involved fix (which may not work in the end) but you should do it anyway. (You'll thank yourself later.) You don't need any of the EXE installers, ReadMes or image files that sometimes come with a Plugin to actually USE the plugin. And the plugin files doesn't need to stay in the directory structure it came in. Each subfolder counts as a file, and while it's nice to have it all organized (for plugins with many files), the more shallow the directory structure, the faster SC4 will run and the happier it'll be. My recommendation is to have a "shadow" folder elsewhere on your drive with the ReadMe's, etc. and/or with the more complex directory structure. More about that in Fix 2. (Which can be used in coordination with this if this wasn't enough to get it running again.) Fix #1: Using XML to change your system’s file limit. I've never done this one, esp. as the instructions seems to be directed at older systems, but if you'd like to give it a shot, check out these detailed instructions: Fix #2: Using the jDatPacker to turn a bunch of plugins into 1 big file. This is what I do. It turns many small files into one big file. Tell it the folder you want it to read from, the folder you want to put the file(s) in, and it will make a DAT file for every subfolder within the folder you specify. Here's a link to the jDatPacker: https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=16500.0 If you do this, it is HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended to have a "shadow" folder elsewhere on your drive with your original directory structure & original files in it. (You can keep the ReadMe's, etc. in there too). This is for a number of reasons: 1) if a dependency gets updated, you can pull the old dependency, put in the new one, and remake the DAT file. 2) if there's a problem with a plugin, you can use the more files version of the subfolder to figure out which plugin, and then remove the offending one and remake the DAT. 3) you can go back and see exactly which files are in the DAT (helpful if you suspect not all the files from a dependency made it into the plugin folder/the DAT). What I do is I keep year folders in my plugins, then inside of that folders like R, C, I, Utilities, Parks & Rec, etc. All years but the most current year (and the last year, if it's towards the beginning of the current year) get DAT packed with separate packs for R, C, I, etc. (And, of course, I keep a "shadow" folder.) Note: The one exception to this is the NAM. Yes, I know, it's got a bazillion files and literally over a million of lines of code. Do a more customized install if you need to. Do just the most basic install. But apparently it sometimes does NOT like to be DAT packed and it expects all its files to be where it wants them to be. If you are deeply insistent on running the full NAM, and no other DAT packing does the job, then and only then try DAT packing the NAM (but don't be surprised if it doesn't work right, crashes, or whatever.) No nightlighting for BATs? This is a known issue. Special settings are required from the BAT creator for night lighting on BATs. Unfortunately, it runs up against an issue where there's a lack of ability to create more than a certain number of night lighted BATs. This has been fixed with a patch in the PC version of the game, but never in the Mac version. (You run into this a lot.) (And, no, we don't have the DarkNight capabilities. If there's a file you want that has both DN & MN (Maxis Night) versions, use the MN version.) So what if I really want all my BATs to show the nightlighting? Well, you can download BATs that already have it. A very small handful of BATs are nightlighting Mac compatible. They're usually tagged Mac compatible. https://community.simtropolis.com/tags/mac compatible/ (note: some transit files in there are tagged mac compatible because they don't have the Mac transit bug. More about that next.) What if I want a specific BAT to have nightlighting? Well, it can be edited to make it work. Unfortunately, the programs required to edit it (Reader 0.9.3 and Model Tweaker) are only available for Windows. So if you have a Windows computer, if you dual boot, or if you have Parallels (or another emulator), you can do it yourself. Or, if not, there are people who are willing to do this so if there's a file you REALLY want to have work, you can request that they do it. If you want to know how to do it, or you want to request a file, check this out: Transit BAT showing 1/100th the capacity it should have? This is another known issue. Fix: DL Mac transit compatible BATs by check out the Mac Compatible tag (or the thread where people fix them) or have someone fix them/fix them yourself with the iLive Reader program (Windows only). Brown Boxes? This is a general problem (NOT Mac only) and is the most common problem people have. You're probably missing a dependency, or, less likely, they forgot to put the right files in the Plugin download. There's TONS of threads on this issue. I installed a BAT but it didn't show up at all! Did you put it in the right directory? Remember, the directory is different depending on if you're using the Aspyr/App Store version or the Steam version. (And it's different from where Windows puts it.) Was it in an EXE file & you need to get the plugin out of the EXE by using FileJuicer or by running the EXE in Wineskin? You can't just put the EXE in your Plugins folder. If you used Wineskin, did it put the files in the wrong place? Sometimes it doesn't matter if you tell it to extract in a different place, it puts it in the default. And sometimes it'll put some files in the right place but not all. (This is why I just let it default, and then go find and move the files afterwards.) Crash to Desktop? If you installed a bunch of files, it might be the Too Many Files Mac bug. Otherwise it's probably a general problem. If it's when you load a specific city, or especially right after you installed a new plugin, this is probably a general problem with a bad plugin. Remove the plugin and see if that's it. If it's right after you removed a plugin, or put a plugin back in, and then delete all lots that have that plugin before removing it again. Otherwise check out general help. Runs so slow it's not usable? Esp. after loading a city, esp. with a lot of plugins: Possibly the Too Many Files Mac bug (OR you're about to hit that bug). Possibly you're trying to run the full NAM and your system just doesn't have the resources. (My MacBook Pro from 2013 doesn't, despite it being top of the line at the time.) Can't AutoScroll? Sometimes when I load it up or Command+Tab between SC4 & other programs, the Auto Scroll (with arrow on edge of screen) turns itself off. You can easily turn it back on again in the Options menu at whatever level you're in (City or Region). Props disappearing from your cities? You may have Prop Pox. While this is a general problem, there's a special fix for the Mac. Note, I've never had prop pox that I know of, so I can't speak on this one. I don't have the PgUp or PgDn buttons to orient ploppables because I'm using a MacBook! Not a bug, but use Fn+Up or Down arrows. I can't use this Plugin because it's in an EXE file! Not a bug, but definitely a Mac issue. Use FileJuicer and take out the necessary files or use Wineskin to run the EXE. See #5 here: Here's some other weird bugs I've encountered. We've never fixed them, and I'm assuming there's some sort of file corruption somewhere. I have no idea if these are Mac only or not. Too Much Money bug: Moneysuck Medical Clinic Bug: Sometimes the advisor pops up and tells me that a Medical Clinic doesn't have enough funding, when it clearly does. I can up the money a bit and she still does it. I up it a little more and she still does it. If I up the money all the way, she shuts up, but that's not feasible in some of my cities. Once a clinic has this bug, it never goes away. It doesn't seem to spread to other clinics in the same city. I'm not sure if it's only the Maxis clinics or if other clinics do it too. I THINK it's just clinics and not also the hospitals. Not Enough Power Freakout Bug: This one has only started happening recently. Sometimes, my advisor will pop up and tell me that I'm about to not have enough power, but when I check the graph I have enough power, usually by a thousand or so. This isn't that unusual, but what's worse is he then goes and tells me a short time later that I don't have enough power, that I'm having brownouts, but I'm clearly not, both with no brownout Zots nor does the graph show that I'm overdrawing power. I'm not sure if the bug lingers through closing out of the program and opening it back up again.
  15. How do I run SC4 CD version on Windows 10 ? Best regards
  16. Just got hit by a system.indexoutofrangeexception which I've never seen before. The message box kept popping back up instantly on close (loop?), forcing me to force crash the game (couldn't even get to the esc menu). This happened about 5 minutes into my first snow map game, while building basic 2-lane + NExt alley roads on a slight slope. I have too many mods/assets installed to list really, but nothing's been updated since I last played without issue - except a LUT I don't use and this fire station (which wasnt plopped). Thinking it could be something that's incompatible with snow maps, but really just trying my luck here to see if anyone recognizes this error... Edit: Autosaved game loaded right back up without errors, but nothing would grow on the roads I were placing when I got the error (just vanilla 2-lanes). Worked fine after rebuilding them, so I guess it's no big deal! 17. Hi, I am having an issue with getting patch 640 to update SimCity4 fully. I went to the Simcity Devotion site and downloaded the 638 patch successfully and installed it, and then installed the 640 patch successfully with no issues. When I check the version info under Apps, I notice that the version info is still 638 rather than 640 like I want even though the installer finishes. As a result, the night light custom bats do not work, even though I have installed the Day n Night Mod and the right buildings for that mod. Nightlighting works perfect on my older computer running Vista (my current cpu runs Windows8) and the game version info is 640 on that model. I installed from the game CD. Everything runs great except that the installer fails to adequately update my Simcity version. I've tried using multiple 640 patches and the same thing happens. I do notice that my 638 update does not have the same size as the one listed in the SimCity devotion site (it says like 8.4 mb and mine is 8.1). I do have the latest version of NAM installed, could that create a compatibility problem like some users have reported using Origin? I did choose a custom path for my installation-I use my D drive rather than my C drive, could it be updating to the wrong spot? Thank you.
  18. Hello friends. I am texturing my first model in C:S and I notice that in-game the texture colors are way off (even after I disabled LUTs) and the artifacts are out of control. Here is an image to show you what I mean. Is there a way to avoid this? Or at least keep my colors? It obliterated my shading and the wing struts are hot pink! I read the trick about turning your settings to maximum before importing your asset, but mine are already maxed. The texture image size is 1024x512, if that's relevant.
  19. Here, i'll leave a picture to show you my problem. Any help would be appreciated. This is really annoying! I'm using Win 8.1, G3258 3.2Ghz Processor, GTX 750 Ti Graphics card, 8 gigs DDR3 Ram.
  20. I'm looking to install the Lot Editor via Wine and I keep receiving the error "Unable to Read Registry." After doing some research, I found that most people who had this problem in the past were in one or more of these circumstances: 1) they downloaded the LE from a different website other than the original EA website (the inactive one from a long time ago), 2) they didn't have a properly registered/legal copy of SC4, or 3)they didn't have the Aspyr patch from several years ago that was required for the LE. Now that all that is irrelevant with the Aspyr App Store Re-release, is it even possible to install the LE on a Mac w/ Wine?
