  4. Tourist Attractions (S3-04-W)

Results Announced Here! Tourist Attractions What brings tourists to your city? Season 3 - Challenge #04 - Weekly (7 days) Thanks to @Mymyjp for the challenge idea. Around the world there are countless places that attract tourists. Visiting famous cities, landmarks, experiencing diverse foreign cultures, or simply taking in the sights and smells. You can travel thousands of miles across the Pacific by air, or take a road trip south. There is always something new to see and do, wherever you go. It's these memories which last a lifetime, and make you want to keep exploring. Yes, it's time to get into that holiday feeling! For this challenge we're looking for your most celebrated tourist destinations. What place is unique to your cities, and makes people genuinely interested and excited about visiting? There are numerous ways to go about this. It could be a notable building or structure, a prominent natural feature, or something more obscure. You could even give a brief background in the description, explaining the history behind the location. Use your imagination. Again the choice is yours what image you submit and how you choose to present it. See the Possible Ideas section below for a few examples. This is a Weekly challenge running for 7 days. 5. Urban Features (S3-02-E)

Results Announced Here! Urban Features Construct and present an urban complex area Season 3 - Challenge #02 - Extended (14 days) Thanks to @philforhockey51 for the challenge idea. All cities have urban features which provide services, entertainment and make them unique. Large, small, high, or below -- there are various types which can vary in size and appearance, but each have their own vital function. This may be a collection of buildings, like in a retail park, or group of apartments / offices. Or even a large purpose-built complex like a university campus, or a sports stadium with parking facilities. For this challenge, we're looking for you to construct one of these areas, and present it in an image. Your image can show the whole area, or just focus on a specific part. There are lots of possibilities here, so it's really up to you what you choose to build. It just must contain a group of urban structures, which are related in some way. For example, any combination of buildings or urban development, that make up the feature. See the Possible Ideas section below for a few examples. This is an Extended challenge running for 14 days. Submission Requirements Your image must be taken showing multiple urban structures with a shared purpose. You may use any city-building game -- including SimCity 4, Cities: Skylines, SimCity (2013), and CitiesXL / XXL. Please submit only one image for this challenge. For the purpose of voting, please check your image has a full title & description. To qualify for entry, please ensure your image is uploaded to the submissions category, and complies with these requirements. Possible Ideas Here are a few ideas to get you started, just giving examples of ways to go about this challenge: Note: The following is not a complete list, or a requirement: Residential estate (houses, apartments or skyscrapers) Commercial outlet (shops, offices or businesses) Industrial park (factories, production or storage) Construction zones Government owned complex Emergency services Hospital / healthcare services Power station Water treatment complex Waste disposal / landfill / recycling University / college campus Recreation park Stadium Race track Transportation services (air, road, rail or sea) Car park New Leaderboard System As mentioned in the announcement topic, this season will be using a brand new leaderboard system. Each challenge will award points to all participants, based on your placing. The higher the position you come, the more points you'll receive. It also gives an extra incentive to take part, even if you don't reach the podium. Then at the end of the season, prizes will be awarded based on your overall standing. 6. Results Announced Here! Vanilla Only Challenge Show off the best image you can create with the limited palette that vanilla SimCity 4 provides Season 3 - Challenge #01 - Weekly (7 days) Thanks to @Mymyjp for the challenge idea. For the first Challenge of Season 3, we return to the very beginning and task you with showing off the best image you can create with Vanilla SimCity 4. Obviously this is a really hard task, as our community has really advanced the visual appeal of SimCity 4, but we think you can make something beautiful. Remember the little tweaks you can make within the game itself, turn off grids, try hand terraforming to smooth out the terrain, mayor mode plop trees to beautify areas. You can use anything available to you in the base game and in the rush hour expansion, or in SimCity Deluxe, updated to the latest version of the game. We weren't going to be cruel and remove the advancements which rush hour made. But please, no photoshopping the images either. So get creating, and show us the best that Vanilla SimCity 4 can bring! This is a Weekly challenge running for 7 days. Submission Requirements No custom content or photo manipulation is allowed! Must use either SimCity 4, SimCity 4 with Rush Hour expansion, or SimCity 4 Deluxe edition, all of these can be patched to their latest versions. Please submit only one image for this challenge. For the purpose of voting, please check your image has a full title & description. To qualify for entry, please ensure your image is uploaded to the below category, and complies with these requirements. Returning to Vanilla Mode This is simple to do, but is so difficult for your sanity! The easiest way to remove all plugins is to rename your old plugins folder. On Windows, find it at C:\Documents\SimCity 4\Plugins Or on a Mac under ~/Documents/SimCity 4/Plugins Rename this folder to something like "PluginsOld", or anything you can remember it by. When you boot up SimCity 4 there will be no plugins in your game. This is because it'll load a new empty plugins folder. However, your existing plugins set will be preserved in the folder you renamed. To restore your plugins setup, just delete the empty folder. Then you can rename "PluginsOld" back to "Plugins", and return to the limitless world of custom content. Note: You may also have plugins inside the Maxis plugins folder. This is located at the game's installation path, usually: C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Plugins If so, you can also rename it to "PluginsOld", or anything you'd like. To restore this plugins set, just rename it back to "Plugins". Unlike the Documents one, the game won't create a new folder here. An alternative method is to use the UserDir command, as explained here. This can tell the game to load an empty folder of your choice. Hope this makes sense, and please post below if you'd like further clarification. New Leaderboard System As mentioned in the announcement topic, this season will be using a brand new leaderboard system. Each challenge will award points to all participants, based on your placing. The higher the position you come, the more points you'll receive. It also gives an extra incentive to take part, even if you don't reach the podium. Then at the end of the season, prizes will be awarded based on your overall standing. Full details and the current standings can be viewed in the following topic: The winner will be the top ranked image after the voting period, and the final rank will be determined by the Baseline Automated Ranking System (BARS). See this topic for more info. For this Weekly challenge, rep prizes will be given for the top 3 placed entries, along with points for the "Overall" and "Weekly & Extended" leaderboards. Good luck everyone!

  9. Final Results Announced! [Link] Sports & Leisure (Weekly Challenge #25) From cycling to skiing, how do your citizens use their spare time? Leisure is quite a broad term. There are many ways to enjoy yourself, but quite a few common activities. Some examples could include: Cycling Skateboarding Driving Walking Running Golf Tennis Team sports (e.g. football, basketball, rugby, or anything in a stadium) Water sports (e.g. swimming, rowing, boating) Motor sports (e.g. track racing, rally) Winter sports (e.g. skiing, snowboarding, ice hockey) Sailing Fishing Mountain climbing Camping Recreational areas (e.g. parks, beaches) Etc... Of course, there's also less physical activities -- not necessarily playing a sport. This could include going to the movies, or even settling down to watch the big match... This challenge is all about showcasing leisure & sports in your cities. There's many options here -- be creative! For example, you could choose an image of a beach scene, a shot from the local golf course, or hikers taking on the mountainous vistas. Aim to make your image as interesting & detailed as possible, to make it stand out from the crowd. In your one image, you may showcase multiple leisure / sporting activities (e.g. a beach with surfing, sailing and volleyball). However, having multiple is not an entry requirement. Voting Votes can be cast by rating images inside the album. You may rate any image you wish at any rating you wish. Try to rate as many as you can as this will help the album ordering. The winners will be the top 3 rated images after a 5 day voting period. Reputation prizes will be awarded based on the number of entries, and the overall average rating. See this topic for more details. Good luck everyone, looking forward to see what you submit!
  10. Final Results Announced! [Link] Fantastic Photoshop (Weekly Challenge #24) Show us your creative image editing skills! Images in our cities can look realistic, but editing them with Photoshop can make them seem lifelike. Take them to the next level, add extra effects and details which aren't possible in the games. Yes, it's time to get artistic and put your editing skills to the test... This time we're looking for an image from any city-building game, using at least one image manipulation technique. This can be subtle or complex, it's really up to you. There's really endless possibilities, and any scene can be used for the image. Also it doesn't necessarily have to be edited using Photoshop -- there's lots of alternatives out there (e.g. Gimp, Paint.NET, or even web-based tools). Even Word has some basic built-in tools! Extended Submission Period As there's a bit more work involved this time, this will be an "extended" challenge running for 2 weeks. It also means that (depending on the number of entries) the prize fund will be somewhat larger than a regular weekly event. Submit your images in the album below Submission Requirements Going with the theme of this challenge, the image must be edited or enhanced in some form. This can be done by any photo manipulation software, not just limited to Photoshop. If the editing is subtle, it might be worth briefly mentioning in the description which techniques are used. For example, sharpening or colour correction. Please submit only one image per challenge album. For the purpose of voting, please check your image has a full title & description. This challenge is open to all city-building games (SC4, C:S, SC13, CXL, etc). To qualify for entry, please ensure your image is uploaded to the above album, and complies with these requirements. Voting Voting will start on the 4th of November, an announcement will be made when that is available. Votes will be cast by rating images inside the album. You may rate any image you wish at any rating you wish. Try to rate as many as you can as this will help the album ordering. The winners will be the top 3 rated images after a 5 day voting period. Reputation prizes will be awarded based on the number of entries, and the overall average rating. See this post for more details. Good luck everyone! The Next Challenge Leisure Activities
  11. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Right, some big news... I've now created an interactive spreadsheet, which hopefully provides a solution to the issues, and makes it easy for us to calculate results. Baseline Automated Ranking System (BARS) Features Summary Ranking Automatic ranking of challenge results. Priority sorting by the rating, then the number of votes. Entries with more votes are ranked higher, in case the rating is identical. Ties In the event of identical ties, the rep prize is split between those entries. This still keeps to the total Prize Fund (as close as possible when rounded to a whole number). Ties are clearly highlighted on the rank. Baseline Method As a solution for entries with a low sample, the "Baseline Method" is used. Consider it a cut line, which is established using the averages of votes & ratings. There are two baselines: Base Votes and Base Rating. Base Votes limits the possible ranking for entries with a small # of votes (compared to others). It's calculated using 75% of the mean (average) votes, and is rounded to a whole number. The Base Rating is calculated the same way, using 75% of the average rating. This is used to make the ranking more logical. For example, entries with a low votes sample, but a higher rating will rank above. This is because the priority is still given to the rating. Entries outside the band are highlighted with a red flag icon. Reputation Prize Fund Prize fund is calculated and distributed to the top entries. This is based on the number of entries & the challenge type. New "Bonus" rep, which adds a bit of variance to the Prize Fund. This is calculated based on the average rating, and the number of entries. Calculation to add the author's new reputation total. Checkbox to mark when the prize has been awarded. Data Validation checks to ensure data is entered accurately. Alerts box which show any glaring mistakes with the data. This kind of works like a checklist. Options to customise each challenge (e.g. ranks which receive a rep prize, manual adjustment of Prize Fund & multipliers). This means prizes could be allocated say to the top 10. Cell formatting for certain conditions (e.g. top 3, tied ranks, duplicates). Each challenge is stored on an individual sheet. Misc stats for each challenge. Preview from the "City Life" challenge (click for full size): How does the ranking work? The basic concept is quite simple. For each entry, it first checks whether it meets the 'Baseline' for rating and votes. If so, it looks at the rating value and ranks them accordingly, highest to lowest. Then a tiebreaker is used, which is calculated using the votes tally. This allocates a decimal number, which is unique to the # of votes. The more votes an entry has, the smaller the tiebreaker will be (and vice versa). It's then added to determine the final rank. If an entry fails the 'Baseline' test, it's placed in a second rank. Here entries are still sorted by the rating, but appear further down the list. The majority of the calculations are done using hidden sort columns. Really it's a bit more complex than it looks from the outside! Why not just do a simple sort using the ratings? Well, the main reason is to ensure consistency. It allows results to be decided automatically, and eliminates the need to manually split ties, or decide how many votes is a fair sample. All it requires is data to be entered accurately (in the spreadsheet). Initially I was considering doing something even more complex. For example, to use weighted ranks based on the rating & votes for each entry. Essentially to award points to each entry, and then sort highest to lowest. But in the end, I think the 'Baseline Method' is more transparent, easier to understand, and keeps most of the sorting by the ratings. Will the data be revealed for each challenge? Yes, when results are announced, I'll include a link to the spreadsheet. This will be a read-only version uploaded to OneDrive. The voting data for all challenges can be found at the following link: ST Challenges - Results Data (Excel spreadsheet shared on OneDrive) Hope this sounds useful! If all goes well, we aim to bring all results up-to-date this weekend.

  14. City Life - Final Results!

City Life - Final Results With voting now concluded, we're pleased to announce the City Life challenge winners! Thanks to all participants. It was a very close battle, but the top 3 (as decided by the album rating order) are as follows... Total Entries: 22 Prize Fund: 440 Rep 1st Place: Krisman - Baie de Byron: Market Square Prize: 220 Rep "Although Baie de Byron (the capital city of Republique de Guatalaga) has grown into a city with over 200.000 citizens, the markets are still a part of everyday life. The market on Market Square is the biggest one in the city, being partially indoor and outdoor. Here the citizens of Baie de Byron can buy all the local produce they feed at a fair price." Showcasing an urban market scene, along with timeless W2W buildings, Krisman's image captures the look & feel of a classic European city centre. 2nd Place: feyss - Hollogne Prize: 132 Rep "Olsènes: "Hollogne district" seen from above with the Hogne river, the A10 motorway and the abbey." Contrasting the old with the new, feyss' image showcases the busy and diverse nature of a riverside area. 3rd Place: kingofsimcity - Jericho Suburbs Prize: 88 Rep "The city of Jericho's suburban center, whose defining features include a massive shopping mall and a country club." From the parking lot to the middle of the green, kingofsimcity's image reveals various activities which make up the suburbs. _______________________________________________________ (You may notice the album is now listed in submission order. This is because ratings are now disabled, which unfortunately means the option to sort by "Highest Rated" is not available). Congratulations to the winners! Also thanks again for all entries, even if you didn't make the top 3 this time around.
  15. The Cradle of Democracy votes no.

The Noes Have It. This most certainly throws the fox into the chicken house. I can't say I blame the Greeks, as they are totally sick of all the austerity to which they have been subjected. The resulting turmoil in the European banks and the ECB will be interesting to watch. This is an example for avaricious bankers who knew they were making doubtful loans. It is also a lesson for people who think that some outfits are too big to fail. If you have any Euro-based securities you now have to make a decision to hang on for the long haul or dump them when you think you can stand the loss.
  16. It's a Beautiful Night in the City

BEAUTIFUL NIGHT IN THE CITY It's a beautiful night in the city. The bright city lights shine and the towers soar to the sky. But... ...does that say this picture is from Kuhan?! WRANER wins with the suggestion "Everest Peak" Wraner will get a sneak peek of the entire park before it is shown in an Holt District update!
