The aftermath of "The Expansion"
TheMurderousCricket posted a City Journal entry in SimCity: Tribalism
The expansion of Udanani has given the tribes many opportunities that did not exist earlier. Udanani has seen a lot of new developments and actions taken as a direct result of this momentous event. In today's episode, you will have an occasion to review each tribe's reaction to what has happened and the directions taken as a result. Enjoy. Even more space to spread kindness and prosperity across this wonderful land. This is a golden opportunity for all of the Udananites! - an average Altruist The Altruists have been overwhelmingly positive about The Expansion despite the initial anxiety that the landmass movements have caused. After the dust settled, they started to plot the plans for new settlements around their starter city in hopes that they can gather more people under their leadership and provide them with a sound and happy living environment. Plans for spacious forested areas and even more "concentric model" cities are now on the Altruist drawing tables. Farther away from the neighbors? Good! - an average Localvore The Localvores have always been rather unsociable so many more square miles of open lands separating them from new neighbors have become a blessing. Unhappy to share the fruits of their labor and afraid of outsiders, The Localvores did not really welcome The Expansion with an unbridled joy but simply and stoically accepted the new circumstances as "desired". This did not fully apply to The Altruists with whom The Localvores continue to cooperate. Even if on a very limited scale. The Expansion did, however, create one problem which both of the tribes managed to solve together after extensive (and exhaustive) debates. During The Expansion, it turned out that Sulka have inserted an extra city tile between Serene Thoughts and Farmington, severing the garbage deal that both of the tribes shared! They have, however, agreed to simply build an extra town into the gap and reconnect both of the cities involved in the garbage deal. Thus, Middlefield has been established. Middlefield is currently populated by both Altruists and Localvores but both tribes are separated along geographical and tribal lines with the majority of The Localvores residing to the West and The Altruists to the East. Upon taking a closer look at Middlefield, one can clearly see these divisions. The Altruists live in a small concentric community with many amenities and good living conditions... While The Localvores, mostly preoccupied with the good of their crops and environment above all else, live in simple, farm-type housing with little luxuries apart from running water and power. Both tribes continue to cooperate anyway. One of the latest project involves three jointly-run experimental plantations where crop-related research is being conducted. Any decisions like these are now being debated in the Middlefield Conference Hall which is located halfway between Altruist and Localvore territories. Sh*t! Sh*t! SH*T!!! Now, we can kiss foreign contracts goodbye!!! - an average Businesspeople Because The Businesspeople wanted to make a contact with another tribe in order to enlarge their markets, The Expansion was definitely not a welcome event as Profit Hill has effectively been left in the middle of a rather empty area with no quick connection to any of the tribes. Many people in the tribe have been dissatisfied with Sulka's work and the CEOs of many companies have been outright enraged with what has happened. This have taken a toll on the economy - just few hours after the expansion, the BATMASX (Businesspeople Asset Trading Market and Stock Exchange) index registered a significant 3.5% dip, reflecting the investors' ire. As a result, The Businesspeople have been forced to urgently look for a neighbor connection. They decided that it was the right time to reflect the will of The Revered Spirits of the St'ropoli Dimension, and build a road-based neighbor connection to seek new contacts... and contracts. As a result, the construction of the R-1 route (R for "riggdalir" - "a highway" in Udananian) with a start in Profit Hill has begun. Here are a few shots of all the existing stages of the R-1. R-1 is expected to reach The Slacker's Cape Careless. It's not a dream business choice in The Businesspeople Chief Executive Board's opinion. However, it is currently the closest city to Profit Hill and the only option quick enough to win new markets for The Businesspeople. At least it remains peaceful, quiet and expensive... - an average Resident Not unlike The Businesspeople, The Residents have also been rather pessimistic about the The Expansion event. It came as a disappointment due to the fact that The Residents hoped that an inter-tribal contact could allow them to outsource industrial power into their city. Something that won't happen too quickly now. On the other hand, some of them have also contended that the new environment allows the tribe to consolidate its elitist statute, giving it more time before any (potentially unwanted) newcomers arrive. What a wonderful time to be alive! I'm fully satisfied! (So should you, or else...) - an average Smileyface The Smileyfaces have, not surprisingly, been among those who applauded The Expansion. To be honest, their positive approach to life could not yield any other result. The tribe now plans to further expand and nurture a diverse and happy society in their refurbished homeland. The immediate reaction to The Expansion as far as The Smileyfaces go, has been the establishment of a new city named Tralfamadore and located just North from Laughterdale. The goal, as the current city council claims, is to turn this city into a center for experimentation and advanced learning. As you can also see in the East, part of Tralfamadore is also reserved for the expansion of the Emo-G Site. The Smileyfaces have thus gladly come to terms with the sudden shift in their living environment. They now hope to turn Southern Udanani into a land of smiles and positive life attitude (probably supported by some futuristic defenses too). This is fun. I'm going to explore EVERYWHERE. - an average Slacker The Slackers have been delighted with the idea of New Udanani and the vast expanses it offers. More lands to explore during leisure sailing and warm beaches to spend lazy time on have been greeted with cheerful reactions across Cape Careless. Many Slackers have already started to explore the coastlines North and South of their starter city in search of best spots for surf villages and relaxation. Also The Slackers, being the most devout believers in "Sulkourbanism", came forward with an idea of honoring The Expansion. Thus, they have asked The Revered Spirits of the St'ropoli Dimension to decide what type of a grand project would best commemorate such unique event. The Slackers have, however, mischievously refused to disclose the nature of the monuments proposed for construction and only provided the names of their ideas, encouraging the Spirits' imagination to influence the final decision... Hahah, yiiis! MOARRR! Gimme, gimme, gimme it aaaall!!! Errr... [*cough*, *cough*] I meant to say - a lot of space to fill, isn't it...? - an average Activator The Activators, as the above quote pointedly demonstrates, have been delighted but completely crazed to see so much empty space around their towns. Activator authorities have been overwhelmed with the amount of ideas for next developments around the existing cities which resulted in an unhinged "stream of thought" type of chaos that had initially completely paralyzed the Activator ability to process all offers or take any sound decisions in a structured manner. Still, after this initial setback, The Activators determined that the best way forward would be to expand the industrial base of their tribe and to continue with the mining activities they have already started a few years ago. As a result, a town named Kuun Lan has been established. Becoming a base of operation for the mining industry across the Dal Xanth Plateau. It is evident that The Activators have managed to discover some valuable materials there. Judging by the equipment involved, many believe that The Activators continue to mine for materials used in the construction industry. Some, however, also claim that iron ore mining might be a possibility. In any case, Activators seem to be fully engaged in their ambitious projects within New Udanani. Thank you for visiting New Udanani! Comment replies: @TogaMasterJohn - Thank you for your continued support! The chaos seems to stabilize as you can see... except for the one in Activator administrative buildings. @Proob25 - In the positive sense... I hope? @kschmidt - Yes, nicely said @kschmidt! This is exactly what has happened with Udanani. With the number of candidate stories and ideas I realized that I need a much bigger area. I am still not fully satisfied with some of the topographical features in this new region. It's mostly about the seams between city tiles. However, I will simply work through them one at a time as new cities are developed. @kkffoo - Yes, I have to admit that this divine tool may sometimes yield unexpected results and the area after the reconciliation still needs improvements sometimes as it's not true continuity - only a mathematical continuity. I always find it funny though to see me and other players scoffing at reconciliation tool in the spirit of "So what if it's continuous?! It looked much better before!!!". I'm happy you like the journal and hope it will remain a pleasant experience for you to come back whenever new episodes are released.- 2 Comments

There were no signs that this morning would be any different from all the other days. People across Udanani were readying themselves for schools and workplaces like they always did. The mysterious tremors that vibrated the earth, have recently subsided and have been forgotten since. Until this fateful day... Just before 7am the ground started to shake violently again with a deafening sound that could only be compared to entire furniture from around the globe crashing to the ground after being thrown out of a flying plane. Udananites started to scream and run around their cities, understandably terrified and fearful of what was about to happen. Many were certain that Udanani was coming to an end and is being obliterated by some kind of a cosmic apocalypse raining down from the skies... or rather, rising up from the ground... And then, after about half an hour of noise and commotion... everything went perfectly silent again. Safe for the cacophony of car alarms, triggered by the quakes... When the Udananites have, more or less, came back to their senses they noticed, to their surprise, that their cities started to float up in the air! As if some tremendous power have ripped them out of place and hung them on invisible ropes in the sky. It wasn't until Ballati Goodlync, a teenage Slacker, discovered a strange, glowing shape on the beach of Cape Careless, that the inhabitants of Udanani got a clue as to what was happening... After Goodlync's discovery she, as well as some passers-by who joined along the way, went to the nearest temple to ask some clerics if they knew the meaning of the symbol that Ballati had discovered. After studying their archives, the clerics have been able to confirm that the symbol in the sand was the so-called "Glyph of Terraforming"... ...which, as the legend has it, was a tool that was used to actually create Udanani! As the time went by, people in other tribes have also been making similar discoveries and research. While most of the citizens have still been agitated and breathing heavily, the hopes were that nothing bad was going to happen with the Glyph of Terraforming appearing all over Udanani. And indeed... The Almighty Sulka, Chief Deity of Udanani and the beginning and end of all cities, having noticed the tribes' efforts at colonizing and developing Udanani, have decided to enlarge this realm, to grant his devotees even more space to live on and prosper in! Once this has been decided, mountains started to crash into one another. Lakes and rivers dried up while other open lands started to disappear underwater. All while the astounded Udananites watched on... After several hours when Sulka decided that New Udanani is fully sculpted, he closely examined each square meter of the newly created lands and waters, with the use of the "City Starter Glyph"... ...upon which, he made sure that all of the terrain is seamless and that mountains of Udanani have gentle, continuous slopes rather than vertical, 600 meter drops. Thus, the "Glyph of Reconciliation" was used... Whenever a city tile created by Sulka was ready for habitation, the deity was reaching into his divine pocket, grabbing the "Glyph of Saving and Quitting" to preserve the changes he made and release the newly formed tile to the people of Udanani... And finally, after all of the tricky, meticulous terraforming, all of the involuntarily airborne cities have been put back into their respective new places, with the use of "Import Glyph"... The final tool in Sulka's Udanani expansion effort, thanks to which all of the extant cities have been preserved intact! Though having brand new surroundings... And by the time the day was done, New Udanani, a land of even bigger opportunities was born... Then, Sulka decided to take a rest after all of the hard work and used the "Nap Glyph" to get a well-deserved shuteye (and perhaps a glass of Jim Beam with some ice). But wait, there is more! Namely - trivia time! Did you know that... ...New Udanani has 51 islands and islets? 22 inland and 29 littoral? ...there are six mountain ranges in New Udanani? ...New Udanani boasts six impact craters which are 708 000 years old!? ...New Udanani has 22 lakes (including two oxbow lakes)? ...the biggest lake is located next to Profit Hill? (yep, they lost access to the river ) ...the highest mountain in New Udanani is Mount Leyndarmalli and measures 1824 meters above sea level? More to come! See you in the next episode! Comment replies: @TogaMasterJohn - As always, thank you for an elaborate and interesting comment! Feedback is always much appreciated! If creation of SBS has been such a big change to the Businesspeople, it's interesting to know what they have to say now! I will definitely elaborate on this topic... @TG24 - Yes, I am also eager to see that! And I already have some interesting ideas in this respect... @kkffoo - @kkffoo, I have to say that I read your comment with great pleasure and I am flattered by your reception of my journal. It is a great feeling to know that there are readers and viewers who dedicate their time to read stories a person makes and pay attention to the storyline and the way it is presented and told. I really appreciate the comment regarding the standard of presentation. It is also good to know that the gameplay reflects individual philosophies I have introduced. I must admit that it is challenging at times to "roleplay" like this, but it is a very interesting exercise and thought experiment to either force oneself to or refrain from doing certain things! As for the before-after shots, the key is to keep at least two different versions of your region. One is your current one. The second, is the "freeze-frame" version that you use in your previous entry... Then, you need this tutorial to get pixel-perfect comparison shots. It takes a little practice to master this technique and some individual workflow is actually recommended, but it is well-worth the results. @mitsos - Thanks! Land route it is (or at least it seems so, given current results!)
