From 60fps to 30 constantly
Mister Giggles replied to Komodo82's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
24 FPS for a motion picture is not the same thing as 24 FPS for a video game. They are quite different. Like the 30 FPS/60 FPS debate for certain games, what we'll live with depends on our tolerance and, indeed, what we notice. In this case, your eyes can't tell the difference. Mine can. I find that I am exceptionally sensitive to jitter in my games. Anything under 75 FPS, the refresh rate of my monitor, becomes noticeable in the form of a jagginess when moving. 24 FPS is extremely jittery. It is not that important given the nature of SC4, but it is noticeable. -
Can't Install New Mods
Mister Giggles replied to BugeyedDragon's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
The Cheats DLL itself can fail to load if too many separate plugin files have to be indexed at the start. -
Can't Install New Mods
Mister Giggles replied to BugeyedDragon's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
Once, I had 4,000 files in my SC4 plugins directory. At times the Cheats DLL would fail to load. Having compressed all of those files into less than 100 a couple years ago, the Cheats DLL hasn't failed to load once. Nonny would be able to surmise why better than I, but my theory is that SimCity 4 creates some sort of "space" to enumerate all the separate files. At some point this "space" begins having errors due to its sheer size and the game's logic starts to fail - inability of the Cheats DLL being an early sign. Yet another reason to compress your plugins, gents. -

And you respond to everyone. Still my beating heart. I think many people would enjoy modular sewage treatment plant pieces, so good on you for that.- 22 Comments

Entry no.29 - Infrastructure in Dresden

The sewage treatment plant is cool as hell. I love how it's all angles and sea walls. I didn't even fathom that was possible. The rest is excellent too, mind, but that treatment plant stands out.- 22 Comments

DLL modders: let invoke the in-game editor!
Mister Giggles replied to OrSpeeder's topic in SC4 Modding - Open Discussion
You're that guy on SC4devotion, eh? Ask Simmaster07. He's made a .dll. His .dll also has source code available, if you're able to understand all that magically magical C++ magic. There are quite a few other people who can program on the site, as well. Perhaps one will read this topic or be guided here by someone. Because they love SimCity 4 and wouldn't betray it. If you and Simmaster worked together on this, imagine the possibilities. I'd argue, with things like the hard coded 6 minute commute time and multi-threaded issues murdered in broad daylight, it'd usher in a new golden age. (And yes, they have to be murdered in broad daylight. There must be witnesses.) An in-game LUA debugger could be exceptionally useful depending on how extensive its functionality is, same with the lot editor. My, what better way to edit a lot than in the very game that'll be using it? I'm rooting for you, Speeder. You could be the guy. I want you to be the guy. Be the guy. -

SC4Fix: third-party patches for SC4
Mister Giggles replied to simmaster07's topic in SC4 Modding - Open Discussion
The size-limit for decompression is a function of the compression scheme used by the game, according to a post in the Prop Pox thread. What would be easier is fixing the error that occurs during decompression, causing Prop Pox. If you will, it's the difference between cutting out a piece of diseased scapula and removing the whole scapula. Whatever THOSE are.- 81 Replies

SC4Fix: third-party patches for SC4
Mister Giggles replied to simmaster07's topic in SC4 Modding - Open Discussion
You're already knee deep in illegality, if using that logic. You're altering the game's code during run time. You've also created a system that purposefully breaks functionality designed to protect the integrity of the game's code. Pandora's Box is already open. I wouldn't worry about it, honestly. While EA technically has a legal interest, unless you're breaking the disc-check mechanisms, I don't see a reason for them to spend the ten minutes necessary to send out a cease and desist. They're too busy being evil.- 81 Replies

Which portion? The inability to launch in 32-bit color depth in exclusive mode, or the color banding? The latter can be explained by the Intel chipset doing dithering...- 81 Replies

Congratulations, you've buried the last great barrier to modding SC4. Enjoy being a legend. This fix works for the GOG version, as expected.- 81 Replies

First SimPeg, now SC4Devotion? :(
Mister Giggles replied to Harry's Place's topic in Community Goings-on
At the moment, I am getting a 404 error when I attempt to access SC4devotion... -
You hear correctly, you. Windows 10 is going to start automatically installing itself next year if people on Windows 7/8 are set to automatically download and install updates. It's already happened to some extent, by "accident". Several non-security updates for 7/8 are installing and blessing those operating systems with Windows 10's spyware.

Possible partial solutions here. Unfortunately, nothing is guaranteed. Perhaps another poster with intimate knowledge of beating back Microsoft's "help" will have a better answer. inb4 "Upgrade to Windows 7/Linux"

Telling a whole group of innocent people "Meh, sorry" because internal politics screwed up everything is not the right course of action. I propose that you keep the older Mac version available with the warning that no support will be given, period, end of report. To soften the blow you can discuss any number of reasons that support cannot reasonably be given. As there are moderators/administrators for both Simtropolis and SC4devotion on the NAM team, you can enforce this with some form of punishment for not following the warning in bright red text. Edit: The above is based on interpreting your statement as "We're going to take down the currently existing Mac version". If you're not, well, nevermind. <_<

City with 80K population crashing to desktop on Ubuntu
Mister Giggles replied to Oren's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
It is possible that the lot has to be destroyed in game, as it's holding over the information that's causing it to crash the game. Sadly, this may also indicate that something else is crashing the game.
