Nice to know you will start to do BATs. If you know how to deal with all those other softwares I believe you'll learn about 3ds Max quickly.

This looks like a good start, welcome to the world of batting. :)

I'm quite certain a solid grounding in AutoCAD will help wonders with deciphering 3DS max, I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

Nice start! :golly: Just take care to align textures properly - you'd normally pile up stones more or less in horizontal rows, so your texture should be horizontally oriented fundamentally.

    Thanks guys for the input!

Hi, I'm new to BAT, and stuff. Basically I have been watching you guys craft such quality work, so I decided to try it for myself.

    - I have a little experience with 3ds max; I used it on one of my interventions at the Faculty of Architecture and that's about it.
    - I have 5 years experience with AutoCAD, however.

-I have 3 years experience of CATIA and Solid works.
    - I was recently taught to use Rhinoceros, a program that is similar to 3ds max but with less buttons and it comes in white UI.
    - I don't have Google SketchUp.

Now, I could easily model buildings, structures, etc. but I suck at texture mapping... Look at this thing that I made in Rhino, it looks like the surface of Enceladus rather than a surface of a Japanese castle wall.

    ihK0A3t.jpg

So that begins my BATing adventures.

PS I'm a visual learner. I tried reading several of them but without images, I have no idea what I was doing.

    EDIT: Much better.

    7RUFmMA.jpg

I'm not doing some textures yet, because the program is technically still at Rhino and I have yet to export it to 3ds max, where I would texture it correctly (when I see a good tutorial somewhere on the interwebs). Right now I'm much more comfortable with Rhino when it comes to modelling curves and arrays :P

Small progress so far on Rhino, I just added a small extension to the rock base. the purpose of this one is to (hopefully) connect to other pieces, that has yet to be determined.

EDIT: Here is the original model exported to 3ds max

Which one are referring to, the one in Rhino? Rhino has elementary rendered options.

On 3ds max, it's still on the rendered option. I usually use wireframe to work with geometries, but that usually confuses me so I usually put it in rendered to see what I'm working at. As I said, my focus is not yet on redering but on actual modelling of it. LOL :P

Yeh I know, and that's totally fine, just checking to make sure you're actaully able to see your geometry. With loss of light and shadows were basically only 2-dimensional! (yes, we actually only are able to see 2 dimensions people!)

So @JP Schriefer told me I can technically model on a program that I am comfortable with, so I have decided to use Rhino and export it to 3ds max later.

    That restarts my BAT thread

Now this is shaping up quickly and nicely! :golly: Are you going to scale the building along the Z axis later? I'm wondering because it looks squashed in SC4 perspective, which is typical for buildings that haven't been stretched to ~133% of their actual height to compensate for the perspective effect. Then again, maybe you're perfectly aware of all this and simply like to do it later. In any case, I wish you happy BATting in your favourite tool! :thumb:

The top row of windows looks awfully close to the roofline - I would raise the height of the building/roofline a bit to compensate.  Also, how the heights of those windows relate to (what I am perceiving to be) the height of what looks like the front windows seems rather odd.  That is to say, if you continued those horizontal lines across the sides at the same heights you have in the front, where they relate to the side windows doesn't seem to be consistent or make sense spatially.

Hmmm looking at the structure the four sides does not actually relate to each other in window heights (which is quite unusual ; the left window array side is just 0.9m from the the roof line while on the other right side the it's much more tighter with only 0.4m away from the roof line).  The front windows which is of a stick assembly glazing (not yet done, don't measure from those lines yet) has its top windows about 1.2m from the roof line. the only thing consistent on the structure is that it's a 4 level structure with the first floor about 2.8 metres tall from the ground. I could technically move the side windows about the same height as the glazing at the front but that would mean I would lose the 2.8 metre consistency at the first level :P Anyway,  that is some nice feedback!

Also, I am going to scale the building about 133% later,  I am just at the early stages of construction :P

    EDIT: actually looks better imho

    Very good, Tonraq!

I would like to point out that looks like your configuration is like mine as default and you need to change it everytime you do a new BAT. After you activate daytime illumination, Maxis or Darknite, go to render configurations and change the sampling mode from Unified to Classic mode. It will make your model looks better and your previews and rendering process will be made faster.

But what is that strange light reflection in the last Rhino render?

that's rhino's shaded option.  I use it to see what lines I could see when doing the BAT.

Can't wait to see the texturing. 1x3 might be difficult to blend with other Japanese w2w bats but I think it would just do fine. :)

Great dimensions! There's a clear deficit of W2W 1x3 corner buildings. nofunk's Clock Shadow Building and JasonCW's Sundry building are all I can think of. Finally we get more. :bunny:
