I vote round. I think it fits better with the overall updated look of the site: the "back to top" button is round, the share to Twitter, Facebook, etc. buttons are round, the pinned and featured icons are round... you get my point.

And as the Avatar, I consider myself an expert in the matter. :P

I say we stay with round avatars!  Square avatars were getting old IMHO.

Frankly, I think round avatars work better with the site's significantly more modern design. Sure, some people may have to change their avatar or at least alter it, but that's not really a big deal. Let's stick with the round ones - we wouldn't want to be square, would we? Think outside the box!

When I first saw the round avatars 3 weeks ago, I was a bit sceptical. However from this point, it's slowly begun to grow on me.

After switching to the square theme and checking the site, it's hard to put a finger on it, but somehow it doesn't look right. This just made me realise how well the round avatars actually complement the layout.

@The Avatar makes a good point about the topic icons. I'm not convinced this would work:

On that basis, I'm sold! :golly:

I believe that many of you here in this thread-poll, many of you that believe in a progressive community, will vote YES for Round Avatars. That we will be proud to click that YES button, and be proud to reply when our children or perhaps our grandchildren, will ask us in twenty or thirty years: How did you vote on the Simtropolis referendum? You were there, in July 2015. You were there when Simtropolians were asked to decide freely on the future of their digital avatars. You were there when Simtropolis had the option to become Round or remain Square. What did you do in July 2015? You said "Yes to Round Avatars!"

I would like to take this moment to offer my support for this courageous cause, by offering this famous quote from one of America's most well-known Presidents:

"Ask not what Simtropolis can do for you -- but ask what you can do for Simtropolis."

I had not realized there was a theme option at the bottom to change avatar appearance. How about we leave the theme as it is, with round as the default and square as an option. It can't be that hard to leave in, and everyone's avatars are going to be square images anyways, since computers don't recognize round images in resolution sizes.

I voted for square avatars, cause they just fit with my vibe better (and I hate the Social Media website feels).

And anyways, don't you guys all know that it's hip to be square?

When the site was upgraded, quite frankly, I hated the circle avatars, but after switching the theme to square, it doesn't look right. It just doesn't fit with the new theme. Therefore, I vote round.

My opinion has been changed, round it is.

I thought about this, and am still thinking about it because though I've thought about this, I still have more thinking to do as to stop thinking about it would mean not to think.

Well, I prefer rectangular avatars since the circular style cuts details on my avatar.

But...

Though I prefer squares, I would by far prefer the old rectangular style. ie. sides not necessarily equal.

While I like the circular avatars, for some reason I'll choose the rectangular shape, although I'll agree with APSMS about the ability of choice between round and square avatars. So "NO", just like in the Greek referendum :P

Just to clarify my earlier position: While I personally prefer squares to circles, I think that we are better off with a compromise here. Let's leave the option to revert to either style open.

Additionally, I notice the square option seems smaller than previously at 100x100. I mentioned that I prefer a rectangular* setting if possible; that is, I think that the maximum area of the avatar should be increased to 100x150 to allow for portrait style avatars.

Some examples of portrait style avatars:

I switched back to square and voted for it too.  I don't much care, but my antlers feel better now that they've been freed-up from that damned cookie cutter.  Leave it as a choice.

Let the democracy decide! (but only accept its results if it's a YES, if not, say the vote has been rigged).

Are there any hanging chads or recounts on the horizon? :D

Round looks more modern! Keep it! (Although Admiral Akbar's head is too big for the circle)

Round is fine for churches so the devil can never get you in a corner, but square is for images.  If I wanted a round image, that's what I would download.  That round frame hurts my antlers.

Arguably few avatars fit the new scheme better than mine, but mine is from a flag and there's no such thing as a circular flag.  Abstain.
