By default, Simtropolis uses Round Avatars as of July 2015. While the Round Army may have won the battle when Simtropolis voted, I have a solution for those of you who want square avatars. I have tweaked the CSS code for a modern, sleek square design with smooth edges. I did this to address concerns that the round avatar style cropped too much while addressing the want for a modern look.

This is available for Firefox and Chrome users only. Internet Explorer worshippers can weep in a corner.

UPDATE: Browser Support:

• Supported and Tested Browsers: Firefox, Chrome
• Untested Browsers (but it should work): Safari, Opera
• Little or no support:
  • Internet Explorer: No support. Please download Firefox or Chrome.
  • Mobile browsers: Mobile browsers still do not have strong add-on support in general. You can try. Please tell me if it works.

Install Instructions:

1) You will need the "Stylish" extension/add-on for Firefox and Chrome. (7 May 2017 - Update: Stylish has revamped and updated their plug-in. Make sure you are using the latest version)

This is pretty neat! You get the best of both worlds - more space because it's square, but it still looks reasonably sleek like the circles do.

Circles are fine when they have sufficient radius.  Why this should be a "modern" look is beyond me.  Both squares and circles have been around since Euclid.  [Aside: I once took a geometry course in which the first five books of Euclid were considered axioms.  First topic: Affine Geometry.]

Thanks. That is exactly why I created this add-on. I supported a compromise between the two. Hopefully, more people see this thread.

It is neither a true circle nor a true square. Wikipedia calls it a "squircle" and discusses the mathematics here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squircle#Equation. I used the word "modern" quite loosely. Modern in the sense that many developers are moving to "softer edges and curves as part of the aesthetic of the site. Simtropolis is powered by Invision which seems to be enforcing the new look. Blame the rise in popularity of certain social media sites among the youth (Instagram in particular).

Thanks! After thinking about it again, I think this thread should be pinned or linked to in the options page (if possible). Some people might be more comfortable with an extra option.

Simtropolis recently updated. My add-on still works in the new Activity page (and everywhere else). 

 

If you already downloaded and installed previously, you do not need to re-download my add-on.

I just downloaded this and installed it and it looks so much better! I don't even know why they used circular avatars in the first place, given that images are rectangular. I wish they would have made this the default avatar style. Circular avatars are stupid.

It's been more than a year since I created this addon. (Time flies by so fast!) It still works on the current version of Simtropolis. If the "Activity" tab still shows circle avatars, simply refresh the page it should show the correct avatar display.

It might be a good idea to edit this into your first post. Let me know if for some reason the board software doesn't allow you to do so.

Hi. Looks like stylish.org revamped their website. Anyway, the link can still be accessed. So we\re good. It's just that their website revamp sucks.
