Hi there,

I believe the CDs are based on a interface that looks and functions similar to the STEX. You can browse the contents in a list view and filter items by specific categories. For example, BATs, lots, mods or maps. Each file can then be copied off the disk (in ZIP format) and saved to a desired location on your PC. You'll then need to install them as normal, including downloading any required dependencies.

As for payment methods, PayPal is probably the easiest and most secure method. If this doesn't suit, I suggest to contact Dirktator via PM or at dirktator@simtropolis.com to see if there are any alternative options.

I paid with paypal - 26 days and yet to arrive (let alone any sort of confirmation email).

I'll contact Dirk.

If the worst happens, and I don't get a response from the webmaster responsible for the CDs, would I be able to dispute this payment with paypal?

Naught but 2 hours later, and my CD set has arrived from Ontario.

I'm happy to have been able to donate to the site. Thanks!

Just to know, won't you make another CD with new contents? The last is from 2010-2011, isn't it?

Donated a month ago today; gently nudged the Dirktator over the weekend.  No reply yet, but I've high hopes.

In the meantime:  thank you, Simtropolis, for this wonderful community. :)

The disks are a sure thing, even when I said I didn't need them, they showed up unexpected.

Well, I didn't see this thread until I came hunting for a reason my disks haven't arrived.

Seems there is a long standing series of delays after one makes a donation?

Not sure I would have put out the $50 had I known so many others waited so long.

There is exactly one person looking after this.  The disks sometimes have to be produced and this takes some time as they may not be in stock.  Dirktator also maintains the site and has some RL duties as well.  Patience.

Seems I got my discs just as the Site was being taken offline for updates, nice timing, THANK YOU

I thought about this, and am still thinking about it because though I've thought about this, I still have more thinking to do as to stop thinking about it would mean not to think.

Just a note on donations to the site in general. I like everyone else has noticed you have faced a slump in donations and I think I may have discovered why.

I was browsing a certain website yesterday and low and behold there was the STEX collection disc uploaded for free for the world to download :( now I won't go into specifics on where but perhaps you might want to try and do something about this?

Simtrop staff feel free to PM me for details on where I found the disc's, I'll be happy to help :)

Hi,

I'm wondering if there's information about Simtropolis' finances available to everyone or if this has discussed before. Obviously, it would be a catastrophe if Simtropolis didn't have the money to pay the bills, so I'm wondering what are the needs and goals exactly. For example, I'm wondering, how many active members are there and does everyone need to give like $2 or $20 monthly? Is there a target? Is the monthly goal continuing indefinitely? Did something change to require this in late 2016?

Also, have other models been considered like some sort of volunteer subscription that could give the site a bit more stability, etc?

I'm mostly asking because let's say I gave $50 a few months ago, is the need so great that I should consider making a donation again, or is $50 a lot of one individual, etc.? I don't really have a context to know how much the site needs given how many members there are and what are the expenses.

We staff are currently unaware the the specific costs for operating the site, however, @Dirktator is the one who does know and he follows this thread. Your post and my mention should send him notifications to a take a peek here.

I'm sure the idea is to give what you think it's worth to you as in individual.  I think about other subscriptions I have or have had in the past to magazines, websites, cable channels, etc and I try to weigh that against what I get from Simtropolis.  I'm no modder - I just don't really have the tech skills or computer education to create things to share with the community (I am learning though!) and I definitely take more than I give back because of that and so I try to donate when I can - as much as I can (I always wish it were more) because that's really the only way I can say thank you for all this community has done for me.  I think if you create and share a lot of stuff; custom content, technical fixes, superb advice, tutorials, research, etc then perhaps your obligation to the community is mostly already met.  But for people like me, if it's in the form of financial support to simply keep the site up and running and let administration focus more on creating and adding new stuff instead of worrying about how to keep the site going then it's worth every penny.  IMHO, I don't think administration ever puts any exact numbers on anything because they don't want the community to feel obligated.  Not everyone gets the same amount of "stuff" from the site, after all but, if everyone coughed up a little, depending on what they do feel that they get, then I'm sure it would be a non-issue.  Simtropolis is free but it doesn't exist for free.

Something like that could well be a possibility. Nothing is ruled out at this stage, and Dirk is actively pursuing viable options.

By the way:

Thank you to everyone who's donated, especially during the past few days. Looks like we're now a lot closer to the monthly February target.

I am unable to pay for anything because paypal wont let me choose states, I can only choose Canadian provinces. I PMed Dirk about this but it's been a few days, maybe someone else can help. I am unsure if this is a ST problem, paypal problem, or only a problem for me and wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this problem?

It looks like a PayPal issue to me, since the states aren't correctly linked to the country selection. There wouldn't be anything ST could do about this if that is the case. I'd see if the same error persists on another browser, if it does, perhaps contact PP customer support.

@_marsh_ ... this is totally blind guessing but in case you have java runtime environment installed - what you could try is to first close your browser (important). Then open java administration in the system registry (hope I use the right english words) on the java window on the tab common (general?) select 'settings' - this opens a window to manage temporary java data - click there to delete all temporary java files. Then try again.

Have you tried logging into paypal?  (if you have an account).  That seems to work for me.
...

Actually, I just tried to do it without logging in and it seemed to work (once I clicked on US, it gave me the option to select a state in the drop down box).  I'm using chrome... maybe it has something to do with your web browser.  *:???:

It certainly isn't ST and it certainly is PayPal.

I've checked and it's working for me (Mac, Safari 10.1) so perhaps web browser/Java/cache related. I recreated your situation and once I selected US the page reloaded to give me State and ZIP code options. Does your page reload when you select the US?

(I also selected the UK and the form changed again for UK specific details)

Thanks for your intended support of the site.

If it's any help, I was able to retrieve the list of US states (or other country area) by:

  1. First entering the desired Donation amount at the top.
  2. Selecting the Country. The page will then auto-reload (you may need to enter a quick security code).
  3. The correct area list should now be populated, and can be selected. The same also for other country specifics, such as "ZIP Code" vs "Postcode".

Not entering the donation amount seems to prevent the fields from updating. Since it rather counter-intuitively throws an error upon selecting the country, once the page is refreshed. PayPal really ought to improve that, such as by only validating once the form is submitted.

Hopefully this works for you. *:)

If not, I'll inform Dirk via the emergency line.
