STEX CDs and Donations

Why don't they make those cds downloadable?

Some of them are DVDs, and in fact they are far to large to be placed on our servers. For example, the one labelled STEXDVD04 has 2.7 GB of content. Sneakernet is a lot cheaper than tieing up a port to send something like that, even on bit torrent. There are over 1400 items on this disk. I have all of them, and they came in an unexpected package after a donation.

Remember, you are making a donation to a private site and the only "thank you" you will get is the disks. No tax receipt can be issued.

Well, I will donate to keep this site running. They are doing a very nice job and a STEX DVD would be a very nice thank you gift.

When you get it (them?) you will really appreciate not having to download all that stuff. It lets you select what you need at your leisure, and think about it while you are at it. Sometimes on-line you can be a little rushed.

Is it too much to ask to fix the pop-up that asks me to support, yet sends me to a broken link?

The first time I got it I was ready to help. I'm on like the 5th now and my inclination gets less and less despite really enjoying the site.

So if I donate one of the days should I contact dirktator or?..

If you do, I'd wait about 2 months before I got very excited. You will get an acknowledgement from Pay Pal.

Mine turned up the second week after ordering them, I was very impressed given the distance between New Zealand and the rest of the world

    @marscully79

I paid on 9/1, so maybe ours was/will be from the same batch. I haven't received mine yet. Seems like most people end up waiting a month, though some have received them in just two weeks. The advice given throught this thread has been to PM Dirk, who makes and ships the DVDs.

A lot of people have posted here because they don't know the status of their order. I think this is understandable because we are all eager to take advantage of such a huge collection of work. It is hard to sit still patiently when you can't see any light at the end of the tunnel: notification that the DVD has been mailed out. I realize that doing this would be a major burden on those running this operation, though. If the vast majority of DVDs arrive within a month, then it is probably only necessary to reply to the most problematic cases (such as those who ended up canceling their payments!).

I don't know about other people, but I am really anal about planning the layout of my cities. My roads basically form an elegant grid structure. Since I place my roads based on the buildings available to me, I actually use a grid in Microsoft Excel to figure out which buildings should fit where in what orientation before I go into SC4 to build. With the prospect of greatly expanding my plugin library, you can bet that I'm really excited about the new blueprints that I'll be able to come up with.

I uninstalled SC4 after ordering my DVDs so that I can get work done before my they arrive!

hi there, just stumbled on this site and am very eager to also enjoy this collections. but i don't want to wait a month or so, ther's gotta be a way to make them available online? would be much easier for everyone!

Well, if you could get the table of contents for them, they are all on the STEX, so you could download them. Believe me, it is worth the wait. This is the site's only source of income, so why not pony up a pittance and wait for the disks?

Meanwhile, help yourself to the most current stuff. You will want NAM v30 and its Hotfix for openers if you don't have them already. That should keep you exploring new stuff for quite a while.

    Have fun.

yes i know good things are worth the wait, it only seems so antiquated to send physical discs. well, since you don't want to change your policy i will have to scrape the money together somehow. does the 4th dvd include all the previous content?

Well, it is not my site, and I don't set the policy, but no, I have all four disks and the content is different. It is not a cumulative set. Frankly, sneakernet is a lot cheaper than downloading. Some people have to pay for downloads when they are large.

    Two the disks are DVDs.

Now, if this was a commercial venture for profit, you might be concerned. However, since it is all volunteer and dependent on the RL commitments of people who do this work in any spare time they have, I wouldn't get excited if I were you.

How do these DVDs work anyway? Is it just a bunch of files thrown onto a DVD, or is there some sort of browser that lets you choose which plugins to install?

Still waiting for them to arrive.

The latest one is indexed and can be accessed in your browser. The older CDs are also indexed, but a little rough. All things considered, they are fairly slick for a non-commercial effort.

I'd like to get the STEX disks but it hinges on the content on each disks. Is there any way to see a list of the content before purchase. There are a number of older lots, bats, props that I would really like, that are not available anymore and if the disks even have just a few it would be well worth the price. I've squirreled away a lot of content since 2005 but some older saved content is lost due to HD crash and disk corruption. Content list please :)

Currently on my desk I have Volumes 2, 3, and 4. So I mounted up Volume 2 and took a look at it in the file system My tree command tells me there are 2551 directories, 8536 files. All three are DVDs, so you can see it would be somewhat difficult to list the contents of each disk. The disk contains an autorun that, effectively, puts you on an index which shows files by category, or other criteria. One of the selections is "all files" which produces rather a large pictorial index of the pictures from the STEX. The disk contains these files but named numerically, so one can't really get a listing with any meaning.

I am afraid the only way you'll find out what's on these disks is to send in a donation. I've found them to be quite useful. Trust us. It is not quite like buying a pig in a poke. The alternative is downloading the entire STEX.

When you select a file from this disk, you get a download dialogue similar to that in a browser. The whole point of this is that you don't need to be on-line to add these files to your system.

    Hello folks,
why can't I get a copy of the first DVD? surely with all the computer whizzes on this site (as evidenced by all the awesome lots that have been made throught the years) somebody could make a copy. It doesn't have to be fancy or anything, Please! PLEASE!!! Also, where can I find some of the files that seem to have disappeared from the site? things like the modulat university, dk1's wax museum and PETA building and other things that I lost when I had to redo my computer a couple of times. any info about this would be appreciated.

I sent Dirk a PM on the 8th of October and I'm still waiting for a response. :P

While I can't speak for him, Dirk has been busy during the past week (he was at Maxis HQ Oct 8-9) so that may explain the backlog.

Anyways thought you guys would enjoy this: all my SimCity 4 disks! :P

Is there a downloadable version of the disks? My disk drive is dying and now fails to read a couple of the disks. This laptop's eventual replacement won't have a disk drive, so kinda curious if there'll be an online ISO that'll be offered. I'd be glad to make another donation to help with the upkeep/hosting costs! :D

A laptop without an optical drive is like a day without sunshine. Your best bet is an external drive with a USB interface.

I think the laptop manufacturers are being a little too cynical about the death of optical media.

I would like to do a give away on my YT channel. I was thinking to donate like 75$ but then I'll get the full edition of the STEX. But is it possible to get the version for donating 25$ but 3 times?
