SC4Fix: Third-party patches for SC4  1.0.7

   (49 Reviews)

1 Screenshot

About This File

What does this do?

  • Fixes a serialization bug that could corrupt the savegame, particularly when mods are installed that modify existing exemplars (i.e. Prop Pox).
  • Resolves a crash-to-desktop when hovering NAM puzzle pieces over transit-enabled lots.
  • Allows other DLLs to load into SC4's memory without a GZCOM framework.

Requirements
This fix is made for versions 640 and 641 of SimCity 4 on Windows. Version 640 is a fully-patched SC4 retail copy, and version 641 is a fully-patched digital distribution version (i.e. Steam, Origin, GOG). Although v641 is supported, it has only been officially tested on Steam.

Installation
Unzip to Documents\SimCity 4\Plugins.

To see if SC4Fix is working properly, check the title of your game window. If you are playing in fullscreen mode, alt-tab out and hover over the SimCity taskbar icon. The titlebar will show "SC4Fix (version #)" if loaded properly.

Repairing cities already affected by Prop Pox
Thanks to kingofsimcity for these instructions:

  1. In the region view, open the graphics settings and change City Detail to Low.
  2. Close and relaunch SC4.
  3. Open the offending city tile and save immediately.
  4. Exit to region without saving and change City Detail back to High.
  5. Close and relaunch SC4.
  6. Open the offending city tile and save again.

Demonstration
Click here for a video showing the ability to hover puzzle pieces over transit-enabled lots with this DLL.

Brilliant work. You should talk to the NAM team about including this in the next release.

Doesn't seem to work. It says my version is unpatched, even after I patched it. I have a retail copy.

Can you go to your SC4 installation directory, go into the Apps folder and check the properties for SimCity 4.exe? Some people have reported this happening, but the game may have patched your DAT files and reported an error patching the EXE itself.

I checked and it's still on version 638. Is there a way to fix this?

@FOSC tule00 I'd make sure you're using update 640, since it isn't a patch that's really promoted by Maxis. Should be the "Sim City 4 Buildings Update" on this page.

If you already tried that, it means the patcher doesn't see an exact match between the game EXE and its own list of accepted EXEs. You might need to reinstall from a retail copy. If you still have your CD key, you could also try redeeming a Steam copy.

Your instructions say to put the unzipped DLL into my user plugins, but my habit is to put all DLL plugins into the program files plugins (C:\Program Files\EA\SC4\Plugins). Among other things, I suspect that DLLs must be kept in the root of a plugins folder; I do a lot of DAT-packing and do not want them to be caught up in any of those sweeps and bundled into a dat file.

I also want them loaded even when I rename my user plugin folder for testing some mod in "isolation" (where isolation still includes some essential elements kept in the program files plugin folder).

Are there any other reasons to prefer one over the other?

PS: Putting the DLL in the program files plugin folder produces the "SC4Fix r7" title.

@jeffryfisher DLL files can be placed in any plugins folder just like any other plugin. If you rename your user plugin folder often that'd be a reason to prefer placing the DLL in the Program Files plugin folder, but otherwise there's no difference. I've tested the DLL in the Documents plugin folder and that's also worked fine.

Now my problem is - you can only one time say "thank you", you can only one time rate it five stars. But while it's been updated I could do this a dozend times. First you eliminated one of the most disturbing bugs of SC4. Now you took away one of the biggest fears. How fortunated I was, you stepped in this community. I mean, you choose this game to make it a stable thing, even when voluminously modded. There must be a trillion games out there that could need your help.

But you choose the game I love most. I think I'll always will feel like a darling of fortune because of you.

Hi! I just wanted to ask if there is any chance it would exist a patch like this for the older versions of SimCity.

I have SimCity 4 oldest version (I think so because it's not the deluxe one) and my biggest city began to suffer prop pox. Am I going to be able to fix it?

Thanks!!

Unfortunately, no. I imagine @simmaster07 spent all the hours and days working on the latest version of SimCity 4 as there would be very few peeps running without Rush Hour / Deluxe.

Are you certain it's not the original plus the Rush Hour expansion? That is the equivalent of Deluxe. If you can search your hard drive for SimCity 4.exe and hover your mouse over the file name it should pop up a little window with some information and the version number is part of that. Let us know what that shows.

Yikes! If you truly have the original, un-updated version of the game the only suggestion I can come up with is to send me the city file and I'd load it in Deluxe with this mod in place and re-save it. Then I'd send it back. That may not work at all, but if I don't plop any buildings or zone anything it might, just maybe, work. (Ofc, I could see that failing too if the game writes the version number in the city save file.)

If you want to try this gamble you could use WeTransfer.com as the file size would likely be too larger for an attachment.

The pox is cured!!! You truly are the master.

I've rebuilt my biggest city twice now, once because of phantom slider and once because of prop pox, and today it started showing signs of the pox again. I never even used PEG's beach lots, so something else causes the pox as well... but it's all okay, thanks to you. Instead of demolishing the city again, I installed the dll, followed KOSC's instructions, and the props miraculously reappeared. I'm going out to party now and having a few in your honour :)

My good man, you are a "SimCity" deity.

Do you think it would be possible to fix the old-timey, odometer-style, overflow bug that causes a city that has pollution lower than a certain about to turn into Detroit? Even without cheat lots, I've seen my city go from a gleaming six-digit metropolis to Detroit instantly, because the pollution numbers got so low that they were flipped to the maximum amounts possible.

I'm not sure if that's possible, given that SC4 is a thirty-two bit game, but it would still be worth looking into.

I seem to have come across a CTD with puzzle pieces/transit enabled lots - specifically when hovering the NAM 3x1 DTR to STR puzzle piece over Simmer2's RRW Spurs and Siding Vol1. I've replicated this multiple times in the same city tile, while also testing other puzzle pieces over other TE lots which do not result in a CTD. For the benefit of @simmaster07 and anyone else interested, I'll attempt to record what happens and get the exception report uploaded to the forum thread, rather than here.

I don't know why it didn't work the first time i tried it, but it's working now.  This confirms compatibility for those of us running (fully patched) SC4 on a VirtualBox XP machine.

I'm really excited to have this working, thank you @simmaster07  :thumb::8)

Heyo, this might be a silly question but...

it says above that this version fixes for 640 and 641 on Windows, does that mean it doesn't support Mac OS? Does Mac even have these issues?

Thanks for the help y'all!

I'm a Windows user here only, so I'm not totally certain about Mac things. But I do know DLL files will only work for Windows based computers. I remember this file which involved some magic for making them work on older Mac systems, but a newer OS version made this no longer work sadly.

It does mean it will not work for the Mac.

Now that's a good question. I do know the Mac version doesn't have the same patches in it as Windoze, but I'm uncertain if that means the Mac didn't get the TE Bug or not.

The video is set to private and there is no mention where this file belongs.  Aren't .dll files only to go into Program Files-Maxis plugins and not the standard My Document Plugin directory ?

That is where most peeps do put DLLs, but apparently it can work find in the Documents plugin folder. Just not in a sub folder either place.

I thought I had one already for PEG download but SC4Fix: third-party patches for SC4 does not seem to be working.

I can restore a previous saved, but forget which PEG one I have offhand
