  1. When I want to look at the Data Views (not necessarily the overhead map feature), exiting the views and turning off all views seems to work relatively fast...EXCEPT for the Zones view. When I try to shut off the Zones view, it takes F O R E V E R for my buildings to return. Is that normal? If not, is there some way to fix it? In the meantime, while I'm waiting, I seriously grab my phone and scroll through Instagram trying to pass time.
  2. Turning off data views is slow

Unfortunately, no...it didn't work. And I'm computer illiterate when it comes to doing the things at that link. I really appreciate your help, but knowing me I'd delete the game entirely. ha ha. Thanks again.
  3. Turning off data views is slow

Oddly enough, I get no lag when coming out of Water Pipe building view, nor Subway view. Admittedly I find that strange, but I'm not complaining about it. haha Ugh....is this basically the same as reloading my entire city map from the region? Oh...yes, I have the 4GB patch. Thanks. I forgot all about those features. I just recently started playing again, and I'm playing catch up. I'm going to try this. I'll let you know if it helps.
  4. For each type, what is the largest size zone that can be laid out, without street/roads? So far the largest residential lot I can get is 3x3. Is that normal? And does only 1 house or apartment building occupy that lot? Another question: For a lot to develop, do all arrows have to be touching a street/road - or only as long as 1 is touching? Thanks
  5. First of all, I am SO SO SORRY that I forgot about this thread. I completely forgot, with all the news about COVID - and I hope you're all safe. So, basically, xxdita, you've touched upon my question and answered it for the most part. Thank you so much. And yes, JeffryFisher, I certainly do remember the Ctrl key. I'm also thankful, Matias93, for better explaining the Shift and Alt keys. Until now I was just fiddling with them until I got the result I wanted. So your post will help me save some time.
  6. What is this, where did it come from? When I zoned the area, it wasn't there. I destroyed the building to reconfigure the area, and the brown/texture area appeared. It looks like cobblestone sidewalk texture from the pedestrian mall. Now I can't get rid of it. How do I get rid of it...should I get rid of it? If I dezone the area and rezone it as residential (or vice versa, as this has happened in other places), will anything grow on top of it? Thanks.
  7. BAT Glitch

Forgive me - I know this is totally irrelevant to your question, but may I ask where you got those towers with the yellow cladding? Can you tell me the name so I can look for the download? Thanks so much.
  8. Simple question for those in the know: How do you get high tech industry? All my industrial zones are either dirty smoke-stack major factories that pump out pollution, or low density manufacturing. Thanks
  9. How to get high tech industry?

Good point. I didn't think about that. I've been so busy keeping tax rates low for the purpose of attracting industry that it didn't occur to me that I was attracting the wrong type of industry. Thanks! Okay, I'll go ahead and download it and install. Thanks for the tips. Yep, pretty much all that is set in my city...good fire/police coverage, pollution is controlled, parks are area-wide, neighbor connections are there. I guess I need to adjust my tax rates like JeffryFisher recommended. I certainly need it for my parks and farms.
  10. How to get high tech industry?

Thanks for the info. I figured it was partially related to the education of the Sims, but I didn't know about that plugin. So if I don't have CAM, all I need to do is install that plugin and educate my Sims, and I should be good for go...?
  11. Okay, here I go again. (Sorry, I feel like I'm constantly starting new topics. ) I'm doing something wrong, but I don't know what it is. I have a ton of plugins I have decided I no longer want. So naturally I've gone throughout my entire plugins folder (no small feat) and removed the ones I don't want. If there are some I want to keep, I've kept them. Now here's where it get's weird (at least to me it's weird): I've removed a ton of walls and paths and canal stuff that I know I'm never going to use, and I've kept some parks and buildings - and even some paths that I know I will use. But after I got done with the tedious chore (which I now feel was a total waste of my time), I opened my game, then loaded my city ... and all the stuff I removed was still in my menus. Now unless some voodoo magic has taken place while the game wasn't running, I have no clue what's going on. Why would the stuff I removed still show up? Not only that, there was stuff I wanted to keep that is now missing. For instance, I wanted to plop Cincinnati's Great American Tower....and I know I kept the plugin for it....but I can't find it in my menus to save my life. None of the Civic Menus has it. So someone PLEASE tell me what I've done wrong. Thanks.
  12. Unfortunately the only organization I have with my Plugins is that they are in alphabetical order. When I downloaded most of them (years ago), I didn't foresee the necessity of needing to have them organized. I was a bit naive and thought they just needed to be "in" the Plugins folder. I appreciate your post, and will need to digest a lot of what you said before I can respond. When I searched, I specifically found 3 separate files with the name Great American Tower in my Plugins...but the building was not in any of the menus within the game. So I removed those three files, and then downloaded them again. I added the 3 exact files again, and now it shows up. So I don't understand why it didn't show up previously, since the files were exactly the same. At any rate, I have the tower back in my menus, but still need to figure out how to get rid of the menu items I don't want. I need to re-read and digest what @rsc204 said above to address that problem. Yep, I did reboot. I even double check my task manager to be sure the game process has been terminated. Will the actual name of the building/wall/canal/park show up in the Plugins folder? I did a search for everything named "canal" or "path" or "wall", etc...and moved them out of the folder. If they're still in there with different file names, then I can understand how I missed them. But then in that case I'm screwed because I would have no idea what was what, since there are files with names such as "z4_NWM_Euro_TRM_RD-4_SSL_mipmaps.dat - and I have no idea what that is. Where do I find DataNode, and please tell me I don't have to be an IT tech to understand it.
  13. A quick simple question: If I want to swap out a slope mod (or add/remove any other plugin) do I have to quit the game, do my thing, then restart it in order for the plugin to become active? Thanks.
  14. I'd read that link a number of years back, and totally forgot about it. Thanks for directing me to that post. I wonder, do you think it would work with my other problem here ?
  15. I'll double check for other slope mods, but I'm pretty sure I only had one. Could a terrain mod have anything to do with it?
  16. Hey, that could be fun. Several nuclear power plants that explode. But then again, the Sims might enjoy glowing in the dark.
  17. Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I haven't tried it yet, but I can a little later with something I'm not particularly concerned about. I did close out and swap slope mods, and now I've totally screwed up my ability to build roads on even the smoothest of slopes. I've tried all the slope mods I have (pretty much all of them), from Extreme Mount to Extreme Smooth...and nothing fixes it. I even took out the slope mod completely, and nothing has fixed my problem. Hopefully I'll find a way of building my mountain communities.
  18. Interesting idea. I already swapped out the mod and restarted my game, but that's definitely something I'll try if/when I swap out again. Thanks.
  19. Have you tried a nuclear power plant in the middle of a residential area? That should be fun. Maybe go into God mode and set off an earthquake or tornado. Then leave all the roads demolished.
  20. lol. Yeah, that's kinda what I thought but I wanted to double check. Thx.
  21. For the size of your city, I would say that 165K population is actually low. But since your Sims aren't leaving, there is something about your city they like. Are your taxes really low? Is your funding really high? Those are two things they might like, and thus they are hanging around. What are your services like? How many fire/police stations, schools, bus stations, etc? If you're overbuilding those, people will stay, too. Something's off balance in favor of your Sims. Check your budget and ordinances. If you have any monuments, demolish them.
  22. I'll try to make this as succinct as I can. I've reinstalled the NAM because I wanted to change some features. (I uninstalled the previous installation first.) Years ago there was double track/rail available for trains, but apparently that no longer exists in NAM...? Regardless, I couldn't find the double tracks I was used to working with years back, so I resigned myself to the fact that I'd have to deal with single rail and forget about continuing the railroad of a prior city I'd been working on way back when. The problem I'm having is that I can see how to use the puzzle piece for ground level single rail, BUT...I can't find the straight piece I'm supposed to use to drag from the starter piece. So the point of this topic is....help, please. How do I get single rail layed out? EDIT: Never mind. Just ignore what I said. I apparently need glasses (or perhaps to look a bit more closely), but I didn't realize double track IS still part of the game. It's the DTR. DUH!! And I figured out you lay DTR over the single track starter piece, and voila.
  23. PLEASE forgive me if I didn't post this in the appropriate forum. I'm lost. HELP!! I played SC4 up until about 6 years ago, then suddenly quit because...well, I can't remember why. But I kinda remember how to do certain things, and other things I need reminders. For instance: When I download custom content, what folder does it go in? What keyboard combination do I use for cheats? (I should be embarrassed to say I cheat ) I downloaded NAM 36 - do I need any special addons to use it? Have there been any MAXIS updates or patches for the game? Do I need any new DLLs? If I download new content, does it come with a ReadMe file that tells me which dependencies I need, and where to find them? Basically I knew how to do everything 6 years ago, and I had all the patches and files and dependencies needed to play the game. I just need to get caught up on how to get back into the swing of things. Thanks so much for allowing me to join the website. As for me, well...there's not really a whole lot to tell. I'm a humble soul who generally isn't good at talking about himself. But a little bit...I'm a Christian introvert (yes, we exist) - an INFJ. I love structural & landscape/nature photography. I'm a mid-lifer, unemployed due to medical issues. My interests are photography (did I mention ), reading, nature, antiques, flea markets, festivals, traveling/road trips, hiking, video games, board games. I generally like a number of different things I'm sure I'm forgetting.
  24. Please forgive me if there is a topic that addresses this, but I literally have almost 3,300 files in my Plugins folder...and I have no idea how to tell what they are. That doesn't even include the multiple folders themselves. For example, one is named PEG_CSK-Add-On2_205.dat. Obviously I downloaded it at some point, but if it's something that shows up in my city, how do I know what it is? Yes, it takes a long time for my game and city to load...I don't mind that. But with as many plugins as I have, is there a way I can group similar items together so I'm not scrolling forever in my menus just to find a park with a playground...or whatever? Thanks as always. 25. How to tell what a .dat file is for

You're not going to let me live that down, are you? The time will come when I have it down to 3,000 - you just wait and see. (You will probably have a long wait. )
