How to change the config of existing region without ruining terrain?
tails2489 posted a topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
There is a tonne of amazing custom content on the exchange including maps. A lot of the maps I've installed and played are laid out in large cities only however and in a perfect grid. I prefer randomness with medium and small cities scattered about. How can I change the config file on an existing region without messing up the existing terrain that I like? -
Which census would that be? This?? I lowered the residential tax from 9% to 8% and ran the game for 2 years.. The population did rise by 2000 but the development was in already developed areas..

Okay.. now explain it to me like I'm 5... No just kidding. Thank you!

Can you explain it as you would to a 6 year old?

WOW looks really really good. Love the marinas and seawalls, would love to see a tutorial or at least know which mods you use to get that look. -

I have seen a few times in this thread that certain BATs are "lost forever". Does this mean no one has these files anymore? Or just that the creators are no longer sharing them and no one else can share them due to copyright/ownership issues?

What are your favourite real world cities to recreate? What cities have a sufficient number of BATs on the Exchange to make a realistic recreation? I have made a NYC, Chicago, Hong Kong, LA and currently working on a London UK recreation. I have also made cities that aren't actual recreations but I use landmarks from 1 or 2 cities only to come up with a familiar look. I have done this with Shanghai, Singapore, Melbourne and a Taipei/Tokyo mash up. I think my next city will be Denver, as thee 3 or 4 largest downtown skyscrapers are on the Exchange as well as the really cool Denver Art Museum. Shenzhen also on the list, with a few cool civic buildings to go along with skyscrapers.

Definitely not to scale. More like mini-recreations. Just 1 Large city tile which I try to model based on the real city but nothing too hardcore. (EX. NYC long skinny island, SF has a bay, London Thames..) For my new London city I am letting the city fully sprawl into the surrounding tiles so that will be a bit of a different look for me.

How to Create a Realistic Transition to Agricultural Zoning
tails2489 posted a topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Hello All, Looking for some tips and advice on how to build a realistic transition from light residential to agricultural zoning on the edges of a city. I typically start a city by zoning all Agriculture and then working from the middle outward decreasing density as I get further from the middle. The result is usually light residential and/or industrial zoning bordering directly onto agriculture. Would you leave a gap of trees like a Green Belt instead? The snapshots provided are for a larger city I am starting so I didn't bother to zone the middle sections as AG as I plan to prezone Res and Commercial in this case. Thank you for your suggestions, looking forward to it.- 13 Replies

Thanks @Cassalett IV for the reply. Yes in some of my cities I'll pick landmarks from 2 or 3 different cities to complete the look I want. For as huge as Tokyo seems.. it sure seems underrepresented in the BATing world. Not too many non-Maxis DC BATs either but you're right, with the 5 provided it's a nice start.

Those True Earth ones are out of this world good, I've seen many of @korver's City Journals. Mine are nowhere near as good, as evidenced by my mini San Francisco here. Sometimes I start out with a plan like making a San Francisco look alike.. Or other times I'll have a purely fictional city and will finish it off by placing landmarks from one specific city to complete the look. Maybe a more appropriate topic would have been; Which cities are best represented on the Exchange by number of BATs?

How to Create a Realistic Transition to Agricultural Zoning
tails2489 replied to tails2489's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Thank you everyone so far for the responses, looking forward to implementing some of your suggestions. I think for the current region I am working on, the large cities aren't large enough and I need to work on city spread a bit to make sure skyscrapers and agriculture can't be seen in the same window. Farms too close to the CBD? What do you think?- 13 Replies

Working on a new city and game stalls or freezes for 2-3 minutes after each new zone or item is plopped. Issue with game or computer??? I had zoned and grew my agricultural zones on the outskirts before starting to build the city proper. That all grew without issue, now have reopened the game after a few days to start building my downtown and suburbs and can't get anything done due to all the delays.

Started a new Region called Kanada, a very not-to-scale map of Canada. Any suggestions on how to improve the maps would be greatly appreciated. 8 Large cities West to East are Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal and Newfoundland. Running into trouble with Agriculture demand, starting new cities with no demand. I usually like to map all agriculture and then build RCI outward from the middle so outskirts are always Ag. How do I boost demand for just Ag without effecting other types? Is there an Ag MOD? I have SPAM but that does not seem to be working. :s Thanks!
