The Swedish capital of Stockholm spans 14 islands on the edge of the Baltic Sea and has some of Europe's most impressive and well-preserved architecture. We'll be taking a look at this beautiful city today with a visit to a few of the city's districts and landmarks, and finish up with a trip to the old town - Gamla Stan. We start off in the city's Östermalm district - this upscale neighborhood is well known for its scenic views, beautiful parks, and historical museums.

Stockholm City Hall is one of the city's most popular tourist destinations - since opening in 1923, it has become a symbol of the city.

The Ericsson Globe - formerly known as the Stockholm Globe Arena - is the world's largest hemispherical building and one of the city's most famous modern landmarks.

The famed Drottningholm Palace can be found on the outskirts of Stockholm - since opening in 1699, it's gained a reputation as one of Europe's most extravagant and lavish palaces.

We now move into Gamla Stan - Stockholm's renowned old town. This compact island in the middle of Stockholm is filled with with historic architecture, and during its bustling heyday in the late 1700s it was quite the sight to see.

Gamla Stan is also home to the famous Stockholm Royal Palace, seen here on a snowy day. Construction started in 1697 and continued off and on for nearly 100 years, and today serves as the official residence and palace of the Swedish monarch.

Wow! Are the boats in the canals from the first two pictures photoshopped in or are those available as lots?

*home! Hoooooome!" *walks towards the pics arms stretched out like E.T*

It´s so well done so it´s more like ART there then anything else, pure class.

The first pic could just as well be an aerial photo taken from above.

Spot on with it all.

I live not far from that golf ball arena there. 2.5 kilometers away approx. 2 subway stations to the south from me and i live on the island called Södermalm which separates the main land which the Globe Arena, or Ericsson Globe\Ericsson Arena is located on.

Old working class neighborhood the whole island but these days not so much as it used to be.

A blend of all kinds of people and as a city, between a big city and a midrange city, no skyscrapers to talk about just a few rather tall ones and then like in the first pic all over the city center which in itself is small compared to the big one´s.

With suburbs i think it´s 2 million inhabitants, some where around that number in population.

Edit: last one of those pics must be of "Gamla Stan", (not Gamala Stan), the old town it means directly translated.

It´s quite old with buildings and the whole island a lot like it was back in the, well, 16´th to 17´th century at least i believe. Narrow streets and a place for all the Japanese tourists to take pictures in. HURRAY!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edit: Yes, it´s in that neighborhood in population depending on how much of the surroundings is counted in.

Here´s a better look probably for anybody who´s into more exact numbers for our population here:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Those two lines there separate my comment really neat, and it looks SO much more serious.

But i ruined that now.

BAH!

@Dead_End Thanks for the comment! I'm using a combination of boats by nbvc, Xannepan on the LEX and callagrafx on the LEX - you would need to do some custom lotting though to get a similar look. Do note though that the first pic required some editing because the author BATed all the boats together and it's not a modular set, I don't normally do that but here I made a small exception.

@Tyberius06 Glad you enjoyed the update! *:)

@RobertLM78 Thank you for the comment! *:thumb:

@Toby66 Appreciate the kind words, glad you enjoyed my recreation of your hometown *:) Stockholm is such a beautiful city - I fell in love with it right away. The last couple of pics are indeed from Gamla Stan (thanks for catching that bad translation I was using) - and as you mentioned, it is quite old - I was surprised how much stayed the same when I was doing that historical scene *:P I'm glad to hear that I was able to do the city justice in this update - hopefully I'll be able to check out the city in person one day.

You had me at the first picture. From there on, I was just blissed out. Except the big nigthtime mosaic, which comes out a bit too dark for my old eyes. (In fact your latest pictures are very dark. Its it me or what ?). Nevertheless. And the picture with the ships is just grand. [ditto the question : are they available somewhere ?]

@tariely Thanks for the comment, glad you liked it! In regards to the brightness: I recently got a new monitor and it still hasn't been a perfect transition, so it's been hard to nail down the perfect brightness and contrast when I edit the pics. Some of the changes were intentional though - over the years my style has gotten a little darker with more contrast, and I've been playing around lately with more vibrant pics though I may cut down on that a bit. Anyways, I updated the nighttime mosaic and it should be a bit better now - I was still going for a pretty dark look but the original was probably overdone a bit, so hopefully it's an improvement.

What a beautiful city - I very much regret not being able to visit when I was younger and backpacking through Europe. Perhaps one day in the future.

As always, stellar work Korver! True Earth is aptly named.

You know, seeing your pictures is one thing. Actuallly having been to one of the places depicted and then seeing your pictures, however, makes you realize how well the spirit of the city is captured - not to mention that it brings back pleasant memories. *:)
