Entry no.31 - Orchard Heights

For this update we head back to Orchard Heights first seen in entry 25. Back then I only showed closeups and focused on the hydro corridor and the residential area surrounding it. But in recent years this neighborhood has developed a small commercial downtown owning largely to the governments policy of intensifying density near Fastraxx commuter train stations. The area now accounts for a little under 20% (5500 of 29,000) of Dresden's commercial jobs while12,600 live in the area.
The Orchard Heights train station is on the south side of the neighborhood while the Web Interchange, originally seen in entry 26, is just to the south west. This was an entry that I was going to post on Tuesday but then I had to use system restore after my computer crashed which wipe out all the images I original took of the area. So I had to start from scratch again. In any case, hope you like it! :)

Overview of Orchard Heights with the major thoroughfares.
v0o7bi0.jpg

First let's take a look at the neighborhood's points of access, major employers and notable places of culture & recreation.
The primary means of reaching Orchard Heights is of course via The Web interchange and the train station.
JxMZLRn.jpg

The Orchard Heights train station is a stop on the Fastraxx line. As noted in the Fastraxx E2, this line has all-day train service(think RER type of service). The stop is used by 1,061 commuters daily and has a surface  parking lot with 255 spaces. Because of it's proximity to Orchard Heights mini downtown(even the farthest offices are only about 500m away) most commuters walk to and from the station.
lNh7OfB.jpg

If we go southward on Middleton Rd. from here we arrive to the neighborhood of Valhalla Park which begins on the other side of the rail underpass. This rail line is ICR's  Lakeridge subdivision, one of two lines that carries freight traffic to points further south of Pretoria.
Q68JnwF.jpg
The single track line is the ICR Sumira Spur which connects to the GWR's rail network allowing the two companies to interchange rail traffic.
3OpXbj8.jpg

The first major office building is across the street from the train station. The SimCityPolska building is located on the north east corner of Michigan Rd. & Middleton Rd. SimCityPolska is a compute game development company that employs 150 people. Their offices are located on the top two floors of the building while the remaining floors are leased to other companies.Employees working here can conveniently take the train in, walk across the street and be at work. That hasn't stopped them from building a moderately sized above ground parking garage with 175 spaces on the east side of the building. I suppose you can't expect everyone to take transit. A total of 558 people work in the building. On & off ramps to the 700 are just to the west of here.
FHWdVxg.jpg
The fisherman's Bar and a gas station are located on the side side of Michigan Rd.
qrtN1Dj.jpg

Orchard Height's largest employer is the TMB, short for the "The Major Bank". They have a branch office located on the corner of Middleton Rd and Ruiko Dr. just to the north of the 700. Nearly 800 people work here. TMB Plaza is the tallest building in Orchard Heights at 78m/255ft. All other buildings in the area are under 200ft(except for the Holy Trinity's steeple). Though this still only makes it Dresden's 23rd tallest. There was some concern about it's height and density as local residents feared that it set a new precedent for buildings in the area. But the new city council has so far rejected all application for taller buildings in Orchard Heights. On the east side of the intersection is Dresden's second largest hotel(behind only the 200-room Hotel Mercure in downtown Dresden), the 132 room Shangri-la Hotel Dresden. The access ramp to a large 600 space underground parking lot for both buildings is just east of the hotel.

Spoiler

For the record here is Hotel Mercure in downtown Dresden.
WYciua3.jpg

Turning left(west) on Ruiko Dr. are a couple more on/off ramps to the 700 past them there is a farmers market and a discount department store.
srsQbCi.jpg

0KOxvjB.jpg

Further west down Grenadier Rd. where it transitions to Portlands Rd. on the other side of the Web interchange is Enders Mall. While technically outside of Orchard Heights, it's actually in the area known as Industrial sector G, the mall is frequented by residents from Orchard Heights. Despite being less than half a km away though, most people drive to the mall since the surrounding roads are are not very pedestrian friendly.
vIu938M.jpg
Enders Mall is one of Pretoria's oldest and smallest and has seen better days. Currently nearly half of the 2-story mall's 180 stalls sit empty while the remaining stalls house mostly discount retail shops. The mall is not in the most attractive location and has not been maintained very well. It hasn't been refurbished even once in its 40-year history. The mall's owners have not shown any interest in renovating the mall but have expressed some interest in selling the property.  Several industrial companies have expressed interest but the city has steadfastly refused so far to rezoned the land. Which would be necessary before any industrial facility can be built on the site(currently zoned for commercial use only). Parking for 300 vehicles is provided behind that mall and another 100 spots are available across Station Rd.
WDW5cSu.jpg
Now let's backtrack down Grenadier Rd. all the way back to Middleton Rd.(and the nicer part of town )
Between Ruiko Drive and Grenadier Rd. we come across the Holy Trinity Church. Built in 1956, the church predates nearly all of the other buildings in the area by several decades.
fINlIjN.jpg
The head office of an insurance firm called GE Money is located on the north side of Grenadier Rd. GE money is Orchard Height's second largest employer with 715 workers.
ymgNClh.jpg
The other two corners of this intersection are occupied by a luxury auto dealership and a branch office for a major cell phone manufacturer.
XtyRxuA.jpg
Further north is Dunstin Park. The park has an indoor & outdoor swimming pool, two softball fields(children sized) & three soccer fields underneath the Hardack hydro corridor.
rdqFljA.jpg
One of the larger of Dresden's water towers is located here as well, with a capacity of 1.8 million liters.
nTkIR5F.jpg

Spoiler

For those wondering, It's actually not that usual for a soccer field(s) to be located under a power line. There's several fields like that where I live, eg;
ErinMills_AthleticFields.jpg

Reversing back down Grenadier Road, east of the Holy Trinity Church we come across an area with several smaller office buildings. Dresden's modern city hall is located here as well. It's the beige & white brick building with the green lawn on the upper right corner of the Grenadier Rd. & Ruiko Dr. intersection.
8aQNJix.jpg

bXdm34V.jpg
Grenadier Rd. then passes underneath the 700
mNBAWs3.jpg
Meets up with Michigan Rd.
J26B1b6.jpgAnd
And finally runs underneath both rail lines before leaving Orchard Heights.
wFfsy19.jpg

That more or less covers all the notable places of interest in the Orchard Heights neighborhood.
Now it's time to Cue the mosaics ;)

Wonderful ! And those mosaics, again. I don't know which one is the most impressive. I'm jaw-dropped t the transport network, as usual, but what I like is that it's there for a purpose, not for mere virtuosity, and the city itself is logically built with it. And the choice of buildings is excellent. (except maybe for a slightly repetitive hose row with all the exactly same gardens in front, which is a bit much --pict 10 not counting the hidden content).

@Dreadnought Thanks for the comment. Dresden is a city that I originally made a ridiculous long time ago(9 years!) I've been playing the game on and off ever since then and every time I start playing again instead of building new cities I refresh my old ones, sometimes rebuilding them completely. Dresden was one of the cities that was almost completely rebuilt. The only thing that carries over from when I first built the city is the general routing of the major roads, highways and rail ines. I can't really say how much time I spent on this individual part alone, but remaking the city has a whole(seen over the last 7 entries with at least 2 more to go) has taken me about 3 months in total.

@tariely Thanks so much! Visual eye candy is of course great to see and there's certainly areas that I could still improve upon in that respect. But if that was all there was to this game I doubt I would still be playing it today. Creating a city that works functionally like a real city is just as important as creating one that looks like a real real city.
Also thank's for point that out about the repetition. Ironically enough I actually did that intentionally for the entry(where's the 'smack forehead' icon? lol). I thought the random townhouses that were there before looked too messy and I wanted to create the impression instead that they were part of one project built at the same time by the same company/architect. But I totally see what you mean now, the problem isn't that the buildings are identical but rather that the lots are, which is of course is extremely unlikely. But then again, maybe the complex is entirely occupied by clones? :P

@philforhockey51 Thanks! I like how that came out too, it's simple but it's one of my better looking train stations.

Great diversity of buildings in that downtown. I can't believe I've never seen the SimCity Polska building before, looks like it'll make a great corporate campus building. :D  Those are some amazing mosaics. I don't know which one of them is my favorite, but that long shot of Middleton road is definitely up there - always love me some FA goodness. Awesome stuff.

Spoiler

I did actually find your power lines over the soccer field a little peculiar at first, but it's probably because of the scale of your park relative to the amount of transmission towers. All the ones I've seen down here in SoCal usually involve a massive park and only a singular set of towers. :P Also Erin Mills... that name rings a bell - in Mississauga?

That was a rebuilt city ? even more wow, then, wower still if the network layout was there since the beginning, 9 years ago (even though it means that however long I play -- and I've played SImcity from its very beginning --  I'll never be able to do that ! Just not in me...):-)

Great entry , I must say . I really like the retaining walls you used , are they available for DL or did you lot them yourself . Your entries have been detail packed and I like how you are showing the evolution of the existing areas . :thumb: Your infrastructure planning is wonderful .

Keep up the great work and sorry to hear about the loss of the previous images . Might I suggest backing them up on a flash drive or other media . It's a shame to lose such good work . looking forward to your next entry .

I usually never comment on CJ's, but this one was the most decent update I've seen in a long time. Having a great realistic effect without losing the roots of SC4. Outstanding work!

Great suburban town; RHW seeemlesly fitting in the lanscape, some real curvy entry-exits,  Rail real nice as well, sory there´s no RRW texture under the RHW bridge. Nice division of town, one side the real townish part other suburbian, love to live at that seaside hood, well done !

Very nice again, the feature pylons definitely work, you can almost hear the humming! How slope tolerant are they?

Excellent!  The building selection is so so good!  I liked the townhomes on the slight incline.  The roads and trees compliment the buildings, the FA roads and highways are magnificent, the interchanges and ramps are realistic.  5 stars as usual.  :thumb:

I may have said this in a previous comment, but if I ever win the lottery, I'm flying you out as part of my SC5 dream team for sure! haha!

@kingofsimcity :thumb:   Yeah that SimCity Polska building would look great relotted as a suburban campus especially with those diagonal parking lots of yours. And you nailed it, that's exactly where Erin Mill's is! Have you actually been up to the north pole Mississauga before? stunned.gif I say 'north pole' because it's about 5 degrees fahrenheit up here right now!

@Ln X Thanks mate and it's cool to hear that still shows even though I've borrowed many ideas and concepts from CJ's over the years.

@feyss Thanks for the regards! :)

@raynev1 Glad you liked it :D - check out the bonus content below to look even further back. Yeah losing those images was a pain especially since I spend a fair amount of time 'framing' each image. I never knew that system restore would erase them because it always says 'your documents aren't effected' or something like that. But it seems unedited images in the album folder are still attached to the game and are not considered 'my documents'. I'll definitely remember that in the future!

@Toothless Stitch That's awesome to hear! And yup there's always a place for a little vanilla maxis in my cities.

@kschmidt Thanks for your comments! And your welcome to come by or even move in any time you like ;)
It's unfortunate about the missing RRW texture but I believe that the members of the NAM team, such as @Swordmaster are hard at work filling in some of the missing NAM textures, not to mention working on some real cool new stuff.

@MissVanleider Haha I can just about hear it too from just looking at 'em :D  Those pylons are actually modified versions of the original maxis ones. While they can be built on practically any slope the ugly cement base will stick out like a sore thumb on uneven ground. Thankfully on flat surfaces it's easily covered up by mmp's.

@GoKingsGo Thanks man :thumb: This downtown is relatively small in size so I knew I that the choice in buildings would make all the difference. And nope you haven't said that one before, but if that does happen you can definitely count me in - it'd be awesome to be a part of a team like that! :D:yes:

@tarielyIf there's one thing I can say I've always had a good eye for, it's making elaborate road & rail networks. I've been backing up my region regularly since 2010 but I happen to have one back up from way back in 2007(just before I took 2 year hiatus from the game) Just booted the city save from back then up to see how things looked, still works fine with only a few missing plugins. Below are few photo's showing how Dresden & Orchard Heights looked way back from the '07 save file. The images come complete with the original yellow screen outline too! That way you know they're authentic! ;)  (also took out the plugins I wouldn't have had back then)

I had to do a lot of demolishing and reconstruction to fit in the RHW & RRW but it was more than worthwhile. You can see from the photo's that the transportation routes have more or less remained the same. Working with uneven land can be difficult at times but it actually makes it easier to build interesting transportation networks by forcing you to route roads & rails irregular directions.

Dresden Overview:

The Web Interchange

For most of those 9 years cites expanded downtown grew and I did some batting more relotting and a town of downloading and file modding. I did all that on and off for maybe really about half that time taken continuously. But there was little overall change in the actual 'look' of my cites in that entire time. The biggest changes in that respect has happened in the past 15 months going back to when I first started a CJ on simtropolis(though as a result I've been doing a lot less batting/relotting/file modding) and for the city of Dresden, in the past 3 months.

AH thanks for the trip down memory lane, it's very instructive indeed, as much about your talent as a CJer as for  the changes undertaken by SC4 in those last ten years !
