Hiya Liz,

Good question!

Beyond the NAM and basic fixes like the high tech jobs fix, and also city halls fix, a lot of it does come down to personal preference.

In terms of getting ideas of popular items of content, I recommend this excellent guide @Indiana Joe compiled:

Indiana Joe and the Quest for the Ultimate Plugins Folder

Also you may have already come across Cori's Shoppes:

These graphical mods really do enhance the game in a big way, and many of them are very straightforward to install too. *:)

Hola Liz,

¡Buena pregunta!

hello, I must have been playing SimCity 4 for about 14 years and I just saw this error ( high tech jobs fix) and within that link there are other links where some modifications to the game appear haha, I join the post

Since you was asking about water in another thread, might I recommend this lot? Power and water all in one lot. It handles what my larger cities can throw at it, and fits in well in light industrial areas. Also counts as bus depot.

I like this one too:

Got a similar noob question. I've played a lot of SC4 over the years, but never bothered with mods. Started down this rabbit hole at one point and got overwhelmed.

After downloading a bunch of plugins, is there a good way of testing that everything's going to play nice? Somewhere along the way I found Cleanitol and used that to check for missing dependencies. Guess I'm curious if there's a way to quality check what I've done, or just find out when my city looks like a UPS facility?

Saw someone mention that some plugins need to run after others, but it seems they are typically named with a "z" so not sure if that's something we need to worry about much.

Generally speaking, the items that don't play well together will say so in the item description.  One way to make sure is to put each lot in the plug in folder, one at a time, with its dependencies, and test the item out.

I say generally speaking, because sometimes the creator is unaware their item doesn't work with another creator's item.

Cool. I'd like to install everything that adds to the gameplay and fixes issues in the base game, along with extra features like the low res housing that seem to be well tested and established. Hopefully get to a place where fixing mods aren't a distraction.

Forgot to mention it earlier, but @madhatter106 has some of the best low to mid level commercial bats.  Their lots blend in very well with the overall aesthetic of SimCity 4. Every time I've had to re-install the game, I download everything they made.  Highly recommended.

@rretail  has many great lots of real life retail businesses.  @Simmer2 does wonderful industrial lots. If there's something in particular you are interested in, let me know and I can help you find it.

The flipside is whether there could be too many mods! I quite possibly have up to 35gb of custom content and i've wrangled the folders and compatibility to a point where there are no conflicts, little to no missing dependencies and the ability to fit my playstyle. I treat the game like a sandbox so the more RCI content the better! If you want a consistent architectural theme you would stick to fewer lots and BAT's and likewise if you wanted a hodgepodge of houses and commercial you would took aat matt325b's homes and Jbsimio shops!

Awesome! Thanks for posting those links. It is a bit overwhelming. Currently I'm avoiding anything with lots of dependencies, but expect to add more of them down the road.

Definitely interested in ballparks, breweries, distilleries (I'm from Kentucky), bike paths, campgrounds, lodge, maybe a state park, and all that fun stuff. Though between SPAM and NAM, there's already to absorb from the base game.

    @Liz Hayes

I'm no expert about NAM trams personally, but here's some info about them from the NAM's documentation which was recently updated for NAM 45:

    https://www.sc4devotion.com/namdoc/feature-guides/light-rail-tram/light-rail-tram.html

If you've any questions specifically about using these, I'm sure the NAM experts will have some top tips and tricks.

No worries, and we've all been there at some stage. SC4 being greatly complex with what's possible from the custom content side. Intricate mods like the NAM, CAM, and SPAM expand on the game's capabilities, but often take a while to master with all they're capable of. (And it isn't only those mods ending with "AM" either!)

Of course, if you've any questions about the NAM specifically, feel free to ask here or inside a new topic whenever.

If you ever have any doubts or clarification about NAM you can do them here

Or on the ST and SC4Ddiscord server.

If you are referring to this mod there are two night versions

1 Maxis Nite is the basic night version of the video game

2 Dark Nite is the modified version of the night that makes it darker and more realistic. You have to use this dependency mod

TBH, this is like telling you what you should have for dinner. There's no way we can guess your tastes and make suggestions from thousands of buildings. My advice is to start thumbing through the STEX and dl'ing whatever appeals to you. Try them out to see if they'll work for you. Everybody does something different, from historical, fantasy, farms, skyscrapers, etc. My thing is slums and ruins. Go find your thing.
