The competition is fierce.  Evidently Simtropolis has been infiltrated and hacked by psychological operatives attempting to dissuade normal human social behaviors in order to determine the popularity of their totalitarian dictators bent on world domination for the sake of enslavement of humanity to an alien civilization.

    :O

In all seriousness, I can confirm the only global restrictions on rep (for all users) are:

    • A sitewide limit of 100 points per day, which once reached would trigger the following message:
"You are only allowed to give reputation 100 times per day. You cannot give any more reputation today."

    • No one may self-award rep. It's disabled for obvious reasons.

I believe I've seen this when the site was lagging. I clicked the Like Button and nothing happened so I clicked again. When the site caught its breath it then saw it as me trying to Like a post twice (rather than registering as Like and Unlike).

Given there's nothing to prevent anyone liking a specific user, that does sound the most reasonable explanation. I've noticed this also on occasions the site wasn't performing sluggish, and think it's because at the time I was using a mouse with a faulty left click. Thus what I thought was a single click, actually sent a consecutive request (i.e. +1 rep, +1 rep). This threw the resulting error, as doing so isn't possible. Only 1 rep is allowed from any given user per content item.

Anyway, I've now changed that message to read:

"An error occurred while adding reputation to this user. Please try again or refresh the current page."  *:read:

Since it refers to a simultaneous action, it was technically correct in saying "You are not allowed". The system would see it as a permissions denial, with that being a generic message to suit the outcome. But this now aims to explain it's not the user's fault, and provides a way forward, instead of a generic cloud of uncertainty.

For the times I saw that error I then checked and it showed I'd already given the Like. So, perhaps: "It appears the site is seeing two requests to add reputation. Please check if your request was already registered." Or some shortened version of that. *;)

Nice!  Now it's even more specific. *

I suppose some errors need to cover a wide range of possibilities. Though it's better having no message at all than one which misleads and creates confusion.

Ideally I think there should be 2 buttons.   1 for simply acknowledging a communication and the other expressing an 'affection'.  One is neutral, the other positive.   The negative is not needed if the neutral is present.  The positive is more true if the neutral is present.

Like and thanks and haha are about equally positive.  Grace, humor and affection are positive responses.  Confused is 'please explain more' regardless of whether its taken negative and sad can be either an inference of a strong negative projected as 'you are sad' or 'I am sad' because of 'you'  so I'd eliminate 'sad' although it could be an agreement that something shared is sad, its too easily too confused as too personal.   I'd replace 'sad' with something neutral.

I would always criticize to replace talking with pressing buttons. Like replacing a real smile with a smiley. Oh, this elliptical youth! Unable to express their feelings with words. That's why they need to listen to popular music from early in the morning until late in the evening. They are studying emotions. Oh, ah ... you can express your thoughts ... with ... with ... words? So - imagine music using buttons instead of lyrics.

As with most things, it'd all be about finding the right balance. Yes, too many options and it may make the forums less personable (even the current Like system has been frowned upon for that very reason).

The good thing with Reactions is they'll be highly customisable. What's shown in that article is simply the default setup, which we'll be tailoring more specifically to best suit our community. Negativity never helps anyone, so I wholeheartedly agree it shouldn't be recorded or measured.

I'm hoping it'll be more a way of visually categorising why you're liking a content item, rather than discouraging posted replies.

Chat... what chat... playing around earlier on my laptop (using Opera), I could use it. Now I'm back on my desktop through Firefox, there is no chat to be found? Is there something wrong here?

Apparently. Tho I'd guess it's not FF since I'm in chat and that's what I use.

    @rsc204

Is there anything in your Firefox which could possibly be preventing scripts being loaded? Maybe an addon (like NoScript, or uBlock) could be interfering?

If this is the first time on your desktop since chat was added, it might be worth clearing your browser's cache or trying a force refresh (Ctrl+F5).

A force refresh did the trick thanks. And here's me thinking either opening/closing the browser or using F5 would do the trick! All good now anyways :).

We need timestamps in the chat. It's kind of annoying not knowing when people have last posted something, or when you yourself might have posted your last message if you go afk for a bit.

The new chat does not seem to work on Vivaldi 1.10.838.7.

Edit: Clearing the cache and reloading fixed it.

First of all, a quick disclaimer that modifying the default configuration is technically not recommended, and doing so is at your own risk. For the purpose of disabling this however, all it does is turns off visual cues when accessing any site without SSL:

Disabling insecure warnings on HTTP websites

    1. In your Firefox address bar, enter about:config   (This is basically Firefox's equivalent of the Windows registry.)
    2. Accept the warning page to continue.
    3. In the search bar at the top, type in security.insecure

    4. The following two preferences will be shown:
      security.insecure_field_warning.contextual.enabled
      security.insecure_password.ui.enabled

The first of these controls the message box shown on password form fields, like so:

      RiX7egz.png

The second determines whether a strike-through padlock icon is shown in the address bar for HTTP sites:

      9Q123qM.png

(I personally find this misleading, as I only like to see any padlock for secure sites.)

    5. Right click both of the preferences and select Toggle.
    6. This will change the value for both from true (default) to false.
    7. As a result, they will be disabled.
    8. It may need a browser restart to apply, though I found the changes were applied right away.

    Hope this helps. *:)

I've noticed a refresh bug when going to certain pages, where my browser will constantly refresh the page (about every 3-8 seconds), or try to continue loading even after all the assets on the page are finished.

It's not doing it now, for instance, but it has done it notably every time I use the notifications panel to navigate somewhere. It doesn't affect my reading, because the page isn't actually refreshing, but it does accumulate a history log (so the back button only leads back to that same page because the back-log is full of the same page), and it consumes resources and data as well.

I'm not sure what the trigger is. Reloading the page manually doesn't stop the behavior, nor does catching the "reload" with the Stop button in the browser, as it just tries again the next cycle (5 seconds?).

This bug has been around for awhile but it finally bothering me enough to post it. If I change any text size or font, the scroll bars in the menus no longer function. I need to save and exit the editor before they work again.

It might help to know which browser you are using as sometimes these things are specific to one of them. Like the old chat had a scroll bar problem in Firefox and Opera but not in Chrome, Edge, or IE. I'm using Firefox myself and I can change font sizes repeatedly.

I remember having some difficulty myself with something editor related some time ago (since fixed). My work around was to use the preview button and then exit that. Maybe give that a try for the meantime?

A bit late following up here, but is the issue still present?

I've not noticed the auto refreshing on my regular browser (Firefox), and can't reproduce it on Chrome or IE. If it's server related, occasionally such gremlins can resolve themselves after a day or so. The clustered nature of CDNs mean different locations may experience varied performance levels. Though a refresh more implies there's a script triggering this action by the browser. Perhaps it could be caused by one of the site ad banners malfunctioning.

There was a loading issue identified in March related to these.

Thanks for the GIF, that really helps.

I'm also not able to replicate this on Firefox (53.0.3), but can confirm the issue on the latest release of Chrome (58.0.3029.110).

Unsurprisingly, it also affects the scroll bars on the Font menu.

Good thinking. But unfortunately they're being stubborn and not updating.

The bug must be cached into memory, as reloading the page restores the expected behaviour for the first use.

After checking in desktop Chrome set to a 768x1024 resolution, I can confirm the issue is caused by the Chat bar. That's what is visibly overlapping the profile info at the top. Strangely it's present regardless of whether the bar is first set to hidden or visible.

I didn't notice it on profiles without the "last won the day" panel.

@CorinaMarie ... The preview trick does not work for me.

@Cyclone Boom ... Indeed, I'm also running Chrome 58.0.3029.110 . It has honestly been going on for at least 4+ months now, so it's not a recent appearance.

I'm apparently not able to edit my older posts, as in the original post in my city journal Franklin County, thus I cannot change the title of the topic, when I could have sworn I could do that as recently as last December. Since the title of the topic directly references the previous update that's sort of a pain in the neck. How can I resolve this issue?
