It's time to ask the question that we all want to avoid. Is Simcity 2013 dead? In my opinion, yes, it is. I will be upgrading to Cities Skylines soon, hopefully. Farewell to Simcity.

Truly, I thin it will be soon. There is still some people (like me) playing. If EA doesn't add any new DLC or Expansions soon,  I bet the game will go dead soon, and vey soon.

Simcity 2013 is dead, well in my opinion. Sure there are some people playing, there always will be.

IK. But if they don't DLC soon, the whole thing will be gone, dead.

I haven't checked, but I wonder if the servers are still up.

SimCity 2013 never gained the same strong foundational group of modders that SC4 did. It's a shame that can be placed firmly at the feet of EA.

EA is selling the "Complete Edition." The studio that worked on SC13 is now closed and only a few people are on what's left of the team to maintain the game. I wouldn't expect anything more in the future.

I have bought Simcity 2013 some time ago. After a few months I was kind of done with it. It had some really nice features but the maps were just too small. At a certain moment that gets frustrating. I think a lot of people had issues with Simcity 2013. The downtime at the servers in the beginning was really a headache for most people and issues like small map-sizes and limited building options also came up. Besides EA closed the Emeryville studios, thus I think the only logic conclusion is that the game is dead. Or at least, will be soon. I can't imagine any big updates coming soon and the community is focusing on Simcity 4 and Skylines entirely.

Another question we might ask ourselves: Do we mind? I switched back to Simcity 4 when I got bored with Simcity 2013 and I might buy Skylines in the future as well. I like to try other games as an alternative for Simcity 4 but with all the mods available it is quite hard to compete with such a great game as Simcity 4.

There will be no new content produced by developers for SC13. The modding community appears to have fallen of a cliff around Christmas 2014. Cities Skylines has grown into a healthy community very quickly  with lots of activity from modders. C:S is a good game, warts & all but lacks the polish of SC2013. I still play SC2013 time to time but get frustrated by its limitations even when modded. I suppose it will limp on for some time yet as a very niche community. The biggest hit will be to SC4 which gamers have staunchly supported for over a decade. It now looks ancient by comparison to Skylines. I still have fond memories of SC4 but I've tried going back to it and I'm afraid it just doesn't hold my attention any longer. I suspect I'm not alone in my experience and that many will now finally move on from SC4 to Skylines which promises much and has amazing potential.

To me I´m still having great times playing SimCity... I found it´s glamour and longevity through the challenges the game has! I´m using most essentail mods (not cheaty mods) and the game runs flawlessly. I couldn´t find any challenge in C:SL besides stretch roads and expand through a large territory. I couldn´t stand the graphics in C:SL and I´m not willing to play a refurbished SimCity4 for another 10 years or so...

Recently I bought Cities of Tomorrow, Airships Set and Amusement Park set wich added great value to my experience.

It´s very sad to find people that rely it´s gaming experience and longevity in DLC´s (probably the same that will bash DLC´s in foruns).

The challenge in C:SL is to expand while maintaining your city functional (kind of what happens for real... and CSL is about traffic mostly).

The only challenges I see in SC2013 are artificial ones because there can be no growing, and the challenge of finding space to place something after only 1 hour of playing... That's not at all something I expect from a city building game.

It seems to be "cool" to diss SimCity2013 and hail Cities:Skylines as the great saviour. If only life was so clear cut and simple. Both have their serious flaws and their good points.

Cities Skylines has those massive maps and excellent support for modders. Flexibility of roadA very active community has quickly established itself and things look rosy for the future. The downside? An abysmal UI. Fiddly to use, far too small difficult to read data panels.

SimCity 2013 has a style and polish with beautiful models and excellent well designed clean crisp UI. The sound effects & music are far superior. Overall it has a more professional sheen and finish. It has a beautiful day/night cycle allowing stunning views of the city by night. It also has multi play for those that are into it. COT expansion. Modular public services. The downside? Those small maps- far too restricted. Very limited number of mods available- unlikely to see much growth in future.

The perfect game? It doesn't exist- but if someone were to take the best of SimCity 2013 & SC4 along with Cities Skylines and maybe even a dash of Cities XXL then maybe just maybe they would achieve it!

It was dead the first day it came out. I played about a month and haven't played it since. I was very dissapointed how EA handled the game at the start.

I prefer skylines personally, however every so often I play SC2013 for a little while... It depends on what you enjoy about the games as to which you prefer. I do miss the supply chain and city specialisation aspects of SC2013 when playing skylines, but the game is far to restrictive on map size for me to enjoy it.

    Hi Everyone

I have just purchased Simcity "Complete Editiion" and I must say I like what it can do. Why I bought it is I want to develop a specialized city and I would like to find a Simcity Gamer that would work with me to develop the city. It would be, I think, a very exciting project. Is there any one out there interested in working with me?

    Regards Gordon

Please email me at gtremain007@gmail.com if interested.

To me, it was never alive really. They built this hype, and ruined it since day 1. It is clear that people want things to evolve, to always have a challenge, and 2013 didn't have that.

i bought the game, logged in 4 times, and never again. I mean, they had 10 years to create a beautiful game, and it's clear that they milked the cow with launching sales, and now that the truth is out there, the game is about to disappear.

Anyways, never liked the game, never will.... But I hope it stays, so that people that do like it, still play it.

Well OP, if you take it that way, then SC4 is also dead, because EA stopped updating it. SC4 initially also had numerous ditches but the vibrant modding community pulled it out.

I think SC2013 (although it has some gross shortcomings like broken gameplay, small maps, no terrain support etc.) if people play it then modders will keep supporting it and if modders keep supporting it then people will play it.

I have played SC4 extensively and now playing SC2013. I would like to play CSL and CXL but my machine dont support them. So I am playing SC2013 :)

Skylines competes with such a great game as Simcity 4 just fine and it's built up by a small indie team. It is sad that SC5 could not manage what CSL is doing - and it's all EA's fault.

I think a big mistake of EA was the businessmodel of Simcity 2013. The general idea was to build a game that would need a lot of plugins to make it more enjoyable. This way you might pay 'just' 50 euros for the game itself but then you buy the European expansion pack, the cities of tomorrow expansion pack and soforth. This businessmodel might work fine in some mobile phone apps and for casual gamers but I think it doesn't really speak to the hardcore simcity gamers. These are the gamers that want plugins, and a lot of them. And even if you can't find it you just model it yourself. I think that this is a feature that EA didn't exploit enough.

Skylines has those options and I think that skylines will be bigger than Simcity 4 at some point. They already sold a million copies in one month and the reviews are very positive. Even though the modded version of Simcity is still very popular there will be a moment that gamers will switch to Skylines. For some users (including me) it gets harder to play Simcity 4, simply because the PC/Windows doesn't support it anymore. Especialy with quad-core processors and new graphicscards it could take some effort to keep Simcity 4 running. Besides, even though the citytile sizes in Simcity 4 are quite big this isn't as big as in Skylines where you can buy land and expand your city up to 36 square kilometres (without using an extension). Thus Skylines is very promising and could in my opinion be the new standard for city-building.

EA just killed SimCity series for easy money...I don't think we will hear about a new SimCity anymore. I think C:S is now the game which will give sequence to the game style.

Looks like SC2013 will limp on for a while but only as a very niche group of players. SC4 still has its devotees who are kinda set in their ways, almost like the old days when folks didn't want the new fangled railway passing through their town or "who needs a colour TV my black & white set suits me just fine" Thing is, there is something for everyone. No one game is perfect but I'm sure we'll somehow manage to cope!

...simply because the PC/Windows doesn't support it anymore. Especialy with quad-core processors and new graphicscards it could take some effort to keep Simcity 4 running.

This is not true, SC4 runs just fine with no more than 10m of effort on a users part and half a modicum of PC ability. *hint* - set the following target "-CPUCount: 1 -d:Soft" for guaranteed stable operation.

Besides, even though the citytile sizes in Simcity 4 are quite big this isn't as big as in Skylines where you can buy land and expand your city up to 36 square kilometres

Again I don't know where you are getting your information, the Map sizes in Skylines are incredibly restrictive. I find I can't make a region where there is one or two large cities with towns villages and rural landscapes around it, there simply isn't the space to do it properly (nor the mods). Not that it matters, my small towns need a mesh of motorways to keep traffic in check or the simulation falls over, where is the choice for the user to decide upon their own play style here? Clue's in the name I guess, "Cities Skylines", but not everyone wants to make large cities, it's a shame the simulator is so inflexible it makes any other style of play very difficult to achieve with a modicum of realism.

    ----

SC2013 won't be modded into something people want, not because a lack of modding interest, but because of a lack of ability to mod things. EA went down the route of cash cow with DLC, they weren't going to open up the game to modding on a large scale which would compete with such DLC, so the code is very limited in terms of what can be modified by end users. Without the user base or interest in the base game it's unlikely anyone will ever try to find work-arounds to get such mods in place, assuming it's even possible.

If you look at SC4, just a small handful of discoveries, in each case making the game do something that was not intended, have combined to transform the user experience and total control you can have over the game. Skylines is supposed to be open enough that such work-arounds would not be required, you could mod whatever you like we were told. This is just not the case, ridiculous limits on the number of props on a lot and map sizes - to name just 2 - are hard-coded in, making them real unlikely to be changed by modders. CO/Paradox say it's for a better user experience for those who's computers can't handle it, which is sort of valid, but unless someone can code around this, those limits will remain set in stone even when that argument no longer applies. Skylines is yet to prove itself the saviour everyone seems so desparate for, I think it's a good game but I remain on the fence still despite a day-one purchase.

What we all want is a sandbox where we can create whatever we decide to, ideally with the only restrictions being how much time/effort we are willing to invest in the process and not the game holding us back through limitations. Despite all the problems of SC4, to this day it still comes closest to this vision, that's why all the really serious players have yet to leave SC4 behind, not because we're curmudgeons, but simply because we can do more with the old tools right now. Should any game come along and give me a better tool kit, I would not stay rooted to SC4, but whilst Skylines looks good from the right angles, SC4 can just look plain awesome everywhere with enough effort. No one has come close to the level of detail or quality of work that we could expect from Paeng, BadSim, Vortext and countless others using these 3D games.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

Totally agree with this... I own skylines.. and I played it. Its fun, sure, but at some point it runs short in specific areas that really make the difference.

This is probably a dumb question but I really don't know as I'm new to the Simcity franchise.

So, I'm a bit confused what generation of Simcity I recently downloaded from Origin. I got Simcity Complete Edition. Is this still the 2013 version/release? I'm reading different names for these Simcity games and I'm totally baffled. I haven't even seen this "Skyline" of Simcity anywhere. (I'm guessing it's not been released yet?).

Thanks for clearing that up for me!

Edit: Oh wait. Cities: Skylines is a totally different game, isn't it? I think I stumbled across some videos of it on YouTube.
