  4. Notre-Dame de Chartres

    Version 2

    10,729 Downloads

A revisit of my old Chartres Cathedral Model. Textures have been freshened up and a few mistakes corrected, as well as size and proportion. Chartres Cathedral is a medieval Catholic cathedral located in Chartres, France. It is considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The current cathedral, mostly constructed between 1194 and 1250, is the last of at least five which have occupied the site since the town became a bishopric in the 4th century. The cathedral is in an exceptional state of preservation. The majority of the original stained glass windows survive intact, while the architecture has seen only minor changes since the early 13th century. The building's exterior is dominated by heavy flying buttresses which allowed the architects to increase the window size significantly, while the west end is dominated by two contrasting spires – a 105-metre (349 ft) plain pyramid completed around 1160 and a 113-metre (377 ft) early 16th-century Flamboyant spire on top of an older tower. Equally notable are the three great façades, each adorned with hundreds of sculpted figures illustrating key theological themes and narratives. 5. El Escorial

    Version 1.0

    15,354 Downloads

The Royal Seat of San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a historical residence of the King of Spain, in the town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, about 45 kilometres (28 mi) northwest of the capital, Madrid, in Spain. It is one of the Spanish royal sites and functions as a monastery, royal palace, museum, and school. It is also known shorthand as El Escorial or the Escorial. El Escorial was, at once, a monastery and a Spanish royal palace. Originally a property of the Hieronymite monks, it is now a monastery of the Order of Saint Augustine. Philip II of Spain, reacting to the Protestant Reformation sweeping through Europe during the 16th century, devoted much of his lengthy reign (1556–1598) and much of his seemingly inexhaustible supply of New World gold to stemming the Protestant tide. His protracted efforts were, in the long run, partly successful; however, the same counter-reformational impulse had a much more benign expression thirty years earlier in Philip's decision to build the complex at El Escorial. 15x13 Lot Works as a landmark Plop Cost: 110,000 Nightlighted

    17,992 Downloads

Philadelphia City Hall is the house of government for the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At 167 m (548 ft), including the statue, it is the world's second-tallest masonry building, only .5 m (1 ft 8 in) shorter than Mole Antonelliana in Turin. The weight of the building is borne by granite and brick walls up to 22 feet (6.7 m) thick, rather than steel; the principal exterior materials are limestone, granite, and marble. It was the tallest habitable building in the world from 1901 to 1908 and the tallest in Pennsylvania until 1932 when surpassed by the Gulf Tower in Pittsburgh. It remained the tallest building in Philadelphia until the construction of One Liberty Place (1984–1987) ended the informal gentlemen's agreement that limited the height of tall buildings in the city; it is currently the 16th-tallest building in Pennsylvania. 14. Mexico City Cathedral

    Version 1.0

    16,347 Downloads

The Catedral Metropolitana in Mexico City is the largest cathedral in the Western Hemisphere. It was constructed in the Spanish Baroque style of architecture and includes a pair of 64-meter neoclassical towers which hold 18 bells. After the Spanish conquest of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, Hernan Cortes began the construction of a Catholic church. This church was demolished circa 1573 and a new cathedral was built on the same place. A side chapel, the Sagrario Metropolitano (1749-69), is the greatest triumph of the Mexican Churrigueresque style. The new cathedral was consecrated in 1667, but the final elements — bell towers and central dome designed by the Spanish neoclassical architect Manuel Tolsa — were finished in 1813. The soft clay subsoil beneath Mexico City, which was originally built on a lake bed, and the removal of water from the soil has caused the sinking of many of the buildings in Mexico City's historic centre. Underground tunnels to stabilize the cathedral have prevented its collapse and have stabilized the uneven inclination of its sinking. It is located on Mexico City's central square, the Zócalo (officially Constitution Square).
