  2. Change Terrain

Hi, I recently started over with a fresh game on a fresh computer. At first I put the WASCO terrain mod and Dark Blue water by cycledogg along with the Dark Basalt rock mod. It worked fine but I didnt like the look so I removed those three and their associated files and put Heblem's Cumbres Terrain mod high, Peg's Brigantine Water, and the ENN Sandstone rock mod in. the game crashes whenever I terraform now. Is there something else I need to do?

  4. it looks to me like you don't have enough midtown to support your downtown.
  5. Simcity 4 experiment, etc.

My cities are a blend of regional geographic features, made up indian name sounding words, random popular last names, and words I've read on housing development signs. I have a large excel worksheet loaded with names I think sound pretty. So far my favorite names I've made up are 'Magnolia Highlands' and 'Palamino Hills'. I think they would make great suburbs. My newest Indian word is 'Obskaniwa'. Simple names like Thompson Falls and Harrison Creek exist, and sometimes, like for example, I take a pre existing word and regionalize it, like for Klatskanee its just a polish version of the word Clatskanie, a town in Oregon. I like to name all the streets too, using an american format of numbered streets, types of trees, waterways, presidents, and popular US street names like Ashland, Ogden, Wall, and Lombard. Usually I do the geographical street names first, like Hill Street, Cemetery Street, and Water Street. Then I fill in the rest. Depending on where the city is, I might include the neighboring states. For example, if I made a city in Indiana, I'd be sure to include street names like Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois downtown. Also sometimes a main arterial will have the name like Martin Luther King Way or something. Sometimes further out into the country, a road that connects one town to another might have that town's name as the road, with a corresponding highway number, which usually becomes Main Street once it gets close enough to the town. Major cities are often street names, like Pittsburgh and Sacramento. Also, the waterways, forests, hills, and neighborhoods have their own names too. A thorough knowledge of old english comes in handy at times for making up names, depending primarily on how far east I've placed the city.

  7. cant find it

i cant find the 'cant find it' thread and also i can't find the 'be able to plop maxis lots, as in all the maxis lots appear under my landmarks menu' download. IM GONNA MAKE VANILLATOWN KEWL.
  8. Big-tile cities

I don't think it has much to do with the number of Sims, but when a large tile is about 1/4 filled, and I'm running on 2G. I've never had slowdown on a small tile.
  9. Canal Vs River

  10. Simcity 4 experiment, etc.

um, no, you download over 10,000 buildings, trees, and bus stops, and then spend months trying to recreate some city block by block using google maps. Then you take screenshots of it and post it here, only to find out you got in 28th place for that week. Then you start over, exchange notes with others, and try again, only to get in 48th place, because while you were getting better, wiser, and more experienced, so were they.
  11. Canal Vs River

you use the digger tool and the peg concrete waterfront pieces to create a canal from a river. I've done an explanation before for somebody else when I was making my Klatskanee city. The only problem is that the canal isn't functional for water traffic because the height of the bridges are too low. There is a way, if you wish, to use the concrete blank squares on a hillside to raise the height of the city however it doesn't look very good in my opinion.
  12. Big-tile cities

big tiles are the way to go. I think the big tiles aren't big enough. they're only like 2 1/2 miles square or something. I think once you download everything you can (about 10k pieces) and put in your infrastructure you'll understand what I'm talking about. In order to place a tall building, you need enough sims near it to support it, and I think its a hassle to place your supporting midtown in a separate tile because of how the traffic works. However it is your game and you can do whatever you want, so have fun.

    awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO COUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
  14. Hi, I got a short bridge to work, but I want 3 more diagonal bridges to work. Using buggi's terrain measuring tool, both sides of the river are at 340m, so both sides are level. Does the landing abutement area need to be clean (45 degrees) on both sides? Does it matter what's below the water? In this case its a steep valley forming a river. Thanks in advance.
  15. Diagonal Bridge Not Working

Ok, so I do need to use NAM highways. I have draggable NAM highways. Both sides are even at 340. Do I need something besides the NAM DBE or will the NAM 31 DBE work by itself? Yes I remove the Slope Mod 1 and swap it with the NAM DBE when doing this. Will this work with elevated NAM Highway draggables?
  16. Region building style

This was my first attempt at building a region, but its bogged down now because after building it I learned what the parameters were for the tiles and squares and felt it to be entirely too unrealistic. I focus a lot on building placement, not duplicating buildings, keeping similar heights even, not facing blank walls to the street, etc. It took me about six months to get this far, but I also got tired of all the suburb towns looking the same because they all use the same buildings. I think I can build about six towns, so I'm trying a much smaller city now, and I like to build downtown first, so that way the streets all line up the way I want them to first, and then web their way out from there. I'm also focusing a lot on producing a pretty picture and taking advantage of the region view angle. To me, this city seems drab.
  17. Diagonal Bridge Not Working

What's the specific order? Here's another shot of what I'm trying to do, I'm hoping I can get all these bridges across from tallest to shortest, saving and rebuilding again and again, but the first part, the right, is the three diagonals (Maxis Freeway, Rail, and Avenue) and from what I'm being told I can't get them diagonally because the Maxis double wide road pieces don't cooperate or something. The rail isn't even working either, so, I'm not sure yet, I've been trying to see if I can build an elevated NAM highway but I'm having trouble getting 6 lanes up in the air.
  18. Diagonal Bridge Not Working

well, that just fouled up that whole city. Time to start anew....
  19. Diagonal Bridge Not Working

    that is an avenue.
  20. Show Us your Highways!

how'd you do the diagonal tunnel?
  21. Street Tunnels

Hi, are there any street tunnels, especially aftermarket ones? Thanks in advance.
  22. Street Tunnels

Yeah, I'm using the street tunnels and they're fine at the zoom level I'm going for. I'm trying to do something that will work in theory in my head, but I haven't finished this idea out yet, but here's an idea of what I'm doing with it. The bridges do work, but as you can see the river is going to drop (waterfall) several times, and to the far right (off screen) should be about 150ft. lower than the riverfront park. I haven't tried the lower (street) bridge yet. I doubt those boats will stay that close to a dam. Again, so far so good. Thanks guys.
  23. Street Tunnels

Thanks for the speedy reply. I found a 10m street flup that i'm kinda making work, but its got a graphic error on it. It's from NAM 31 or 32, whatever the current one is. Anyways this'll work I think.
