Someday I'll deserve lore. Someday... someday. Ulisse might be able to fill in more blanks here, but does the Alliance of Independent Nations fit the bill as Simtropolis lore? It's its own thing now, but it seems like a lot of the early members came by way of SC4 and evolved into a self-contained alt-history group later.

These planes all look so good. Do want. -

Diagonal planes? Oh man. Gimme. If there's an Air Canada set in there, I'm gonna be happier than a pig in a sty. Also: Don't think I didn't notice those fractional-angle Dash 8s. -

Did you find a solution, out of curiosity? I admit to knowing virtually nothing about how LODs work. I'm a baby BATer.

The answer there is likely "Yes, eventually." Right now I'm still fooling around with a few things, and if I release them they're highly unlikely to be nightlit, as I am dumb and don't know how to do it. Right now I'm fussing with trying to make diagonal versions work, which is running into the problem of the LODs at the two furthest-out levels of zoom causing the ships to overlap adjacent seawalls and props.

As I fuss with diagonal seaport stuff, here's something I picked up on: The scale of existing ploppable ships. Here's a quick side-by-side of some of the notable ones out there, alongside my own little conversion set. The outlier is obviously SM2's supertanker, which comes in shorter than PEG's ploppable freighters. My tanker and container ship conversions come in around 16 tiles long when plopped orthogonally.

A few proof-of-concept lots for implementing very simple eye-candy diagonal seaports. The platforms are my own very basic creations (and I think the texture is the only un-crappy thing about them); the freighter is a purchased model converted to an SC4 prop and lotted using SOMY's boat-prop-on-a-1x1-dummy-tile method; the cranes are from Linus van Pelt's prop set and the containers are mostly SM2 prop families. If I can iron out some of the fuzziness with these, they could in theory be paired with shorewalls - JRJ's in this case, though the trees poking through are something I'd like to solve. Incidentally, the container ship is a 16x3 prop and still about 100 metres shorter than in life - it's about 260 metres long here compared to 360 in life. It's still probably the largest ship I have available. Really cargo ship scaling seems more art than science.

This is a momentary deviation from Beringia, but: A minor but illustrative snippet of the port of Acua, Democratic Republic of Formosa, Africa. This mainly serves as a proof-of-concept for lotting Linus van Pelt's beautiful diagonal and orthogonal crane props and pairing them with the right seawalls to approximate a diagonal seaport. If I can convert a couple of purchased freighter models and import them, it may be possible to set up very simple cosmetic diagonal ports.

What was your approach to learning SC4?
PlanetOfHats replied to RobVG's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I was younger and dumber at the time, so I think it involved trying to adapt my old methods from SimCity 3000, failing, and then reading stuff like FAQ sites to come up with optimal zoning patterns. Of course I do none of that now and just play the game with so many mods that it's barely recognizable from how I played it in the old days.
