CHALLENGE COMPLETED
Results Announced Here!

In a virtual world, the hardest test for any builder is to realistically recreate a location
Season 3 - Challenge #08 - Monthly (45 days)

City builders value their ability to create realistic images, but how realistic are these scenes? With the improvements BATers and modders have made to the game, and how realistic their creations are, can our builders create scenes which are indistinguishable from real life?

We want you to submit an image based off of a real world location. Create this image so that it is as realistic as possible, and include a link to the real world site, or an image which you based this location off. Remembering that real life is not as clean and shiny as it is in our imagination, it's dirty, irregular and exciting!

The winner was the top ranked image after the voting period, with the final rank determined by the ranking system.

In this  Monthly  challenge, rep prizes were given for the top 5 placed entries, along with points for the "Overall" and "Monthly & Custom Content" leaderboards.

    • Haven't messed with minecraft (yet) nor SC2013... I always thought vertical zoning would be great addition to the game.
Hehe - they are a cool series.  Not long after getting another copy of City, I got a copy of Underground on a recommendation.
    • I think SC2000 was the final hook, it enabled more vertical construction at least in terra-forming.
Those look like an excellent series of books by David MacAulay to inspire engineers.   I used to lug home giant books full of glossy pictures of futuristic architecture from the library.
The aspect of constructing architecture hasn't been directly part of the SC games, but in SC 2013 the Cities of Tomorrow expansion includes multifunctional mega-towers that the player adds levels to, so that gives the game a bit of a vertical playing field as well as horizontal, but nothing like Minecraft.
I only recently discovered a bit more depth to the history of design tracking Leonardo Da Vinci back to an engineer of Roman antiquity named Vitruvius who wrote 'De architectura'.
A good example of the mega-structure concept is Diego Del Llano's H1: Hybrid Building
    • Ditto what coolsim1 said.... Where can we find those stores on here? (Nike, Converse, and Hilfiger)
    • Architecture was one of my first big interests... wound up going to TTU long ago for a year to study it, but for various reasons didn't stick with it.   Also David MacAulay's book City was one of my favourite books growing up.... I actually purchased another copy of it a few years ago as I'd loaned it out and it was never returned.
Edit: It was actually during my days at TTU that I picked up a copy of SC2000, and the obsession began!

    • Thanks.  It seems SimCity has been part of my computer-using time forever.   Maybe the same for you, it connected to my interest in architecture and city design back to childhood.
