Thank you for your help, Cyclone Boom.  As you can see, my (maybe) temporary avatar is working.  As for the images on the About Me page, you can edit them out if you'd like.

Cori, I will download the important file ever as soon as I can.

Edit:  Well, I downloaded the file, and unzipped it with WINRAR into the PlugIns Folder.  Now my game doesn't launch at all.  *:???:

Yikes! That's not what it's supposed to do. (I mean yes, that'll prevent all errors, but at the cost of not allowing the game to run.) :O

Ok, for this we'd better call in the experts. How about posting a new topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues? Just say you've downloaded the SC4Fix.dll and that the game won't launch now. (Provide details of which version of the game you have such as disc based, Gog, Steam, etc. and what Operating System you are using.) It'd help to to post a linky to the file you got. I'll put that in a code box here so you can copy and paste it.

https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/30883-sc4fix-third-party-patches-for-sc4/

Now, one other thing about following the rules so well and not adding an extra post which would bump the thread: When you edit your post I don't get a notification to come look. So, you can either do the @ mention me when you edit (see the Intro Guide about that) or just go ahead and write a new post. As long as there is a legitimate reason to post back to back it's ok to do that. Then anyone following the thread will get beeped (notified). *;)

Hi all, My name is Dan and I am 40 years old hailing from Sudbury Ontario, Canada. This is my first night on the forum and I am glad to be a part of this community. After just browsing for weeks I find the people here seem to be really nice and helpful. I played this a lot back when it came out but was not very computer literate at that time, I didn't even have one of my own, so knowing about DLC and mods wasn't  even an option unless someone told me. Now having multiple comps in last 12 years I have learned a lot and am a successfully self employed web developer/graphics/video creation/Internet marketing and advertising agent (all self taught. Google and Youtube we're the best and most educated professors I've ever had lol).

So browsing the net one day I came across this site and looked around and immediately started downloading a bunch of cool mods I wanted to try out. Pulled my game out and now 3 months later have 5GB of mods downloaded (4GB installed..........on a 1.5GB game, lol), and finally started building. I will be playing this for the next 5 years now lol. I hope the community stays alive cause I would like to start batting this coming year.

I really want to say THANK YOU to all the modders for all their hard work. Even though I haven't created anything for the SimCity 4 community yet, I do know how much computer time goes into this stuff and some of these mods are simply amazing and beautiful. I definitely have the majority Pegasus right now and will be doing an "Ode to PEG" in the "show us what your working on" section. Mainly because I have only used their major mods sets so far in my city, but a lot of other mods as well in between so nobody feel left out please if I don't mention your mod. I am new to community and only know so many off hand right now. Regardless, everyone's work is well appreciated.

But so far I created what I think are an awesome wooded trails and 2 tiered pond area leading down waterfalls into a stream and my full logging/milling area from the PEG Mountain Theme Pack, a partial rural/farm area complete with PEG rural roads and my seaport warehouse and container district from a couple of PEG's Coastal Development kits. I am really impressed with all the props and details I am able to add to my scenes as you will see I am very detail oriented. So watch for my next post over in that section and I look forward to conversing and creating with you all.

@CorinaMarie

Before I get confronted with the issue. What site/program is best for posting pics on here or do I have to use Imgur or something specific?

Thank You in advance!

Any of them that still work are fine from ST's perspective. You need to paste in the direct link. However, I used Photobucket for years and years and then suddenly they decided to take my pictures hostage for a rather large ransom amount. Many peeps suggested other hosts in the thread I created at the time: The End of an Era (Photobucket Borks the Internet)

I really can't say which I'd recommend, but you can read over their suggestions and decide which you want to use.

Since the majority of my posts have been informative stuff, @Cyclone Boom offered to increase my storage limit here on the site and now that's all I use. Now as an admin (I wasn't one then) I have unlimited storage so I don't have to worry. You can also use our site for your pics (and I highly recommend using the JPG format at about 75% to reduce size). Just keep an eye on how much you have used of your storage limit and you can get by that way for a long, long time.

This is my first night on the forum and I am glad to be a part of this community.

Hi Dan and welcome!

It already sounds like you've made great ground with getting started in SC4. The world of custom content is so incredibly vast (our STEX alone is 43 GB), and this extends to the LEX at SC4Devotion, likewise with many multiple goodies as I'm sure you've discovered so far. Also to get into developing items of your own is a fabulous goal worth aspiring to. Of course, there are many helpful folks to shine the light and guide the way if you've any questions.

The SC4 Showcase forum is one of many hubs of creativity here at Simtropolis. It really is the ideal place to post progress of your city scenes, spanning many themes at any stage of completion. What's nice is with each of us having our own mayoral methodology, everyone creates in their own uniquely varied style. Even with the same or a limited toolset, there are seemingly endless possibilities in what one can achieve. Some of the posters there have even taken it further by running City Journals. The choice is yours and anyone is free to post progress to their heart's content. We also have no hard rules on topic bumping, so consider any of the Showcases open for business at any time.

In terms of images, we've a quota of 100 MB for site attachment storage which can be managed via this page in your account settings. Posting lots of images you may find this exhausts itself fairly quickly. In which case an external host is a possible option as @CorinaMarie mentioned above.

Ideally extra space can be provided here, but I'm sure you'd understand with the costs of bandwidth and storage why such a limit exists for the membership (we'd rather not have such restrictions). Looking ahead, one possibility is to offer an increase as part of an account upgrade (all for a very reasonable fee). Details of such are still sketchy at this stage, but we'll let everyone know if this comes to fruition, or even if the current quota is viable to raise.

Again we wish to extend a warm welcome to the community, and hope you enjoy it here.  (In fact, I know you will. *;) )

Ah thank you guys for the advice, Lots of options available then.

I was actually browsing one of my first days months back, and am the curious type that has to check out every link, so I eventually got to city journals and came across a couple that were pretty amazing. The one that was Egypt themed and there was another that looked like an Assassin's Creed setting. I was just scanning the pics and not reading journals, but amazing work some people can do.

Once I'm bored of playing with all the new mods I am definitely gonna create a theme region and city journal for each city. I am a huge science buff so I will more likely do something geared around a moon or new planet colony. I always wanted to do a "Coruscant - The City Covered Planet" city theme with only tall futuristic building and such as well, but with a little twist cause just all skyscrapers could be boring. I'll have to see, so many great ideas popping up from seeing other stuff and because I am still bumping into and downloading cool mods I find, lol. Will it ever end lol.

Hi, I've just joined as want info on how to play SC4 again.

My old game obviously doesn't work on computer now win10. When I asked on the fb group, it was beyond my technical ability. Surely it can't be that hard to just buy play the damn thing!

The disc version doesn't work on Windows 10 because Microsoft dropped support for a driver it needs.

You'll have to get it digitally on GOG (where it's currently 75% off as of this post) or Steam if you want to play it.

Good plan. @Toby Ferrian's reply here and the copy of same in your new thread are the correct answer. Microsloth decided to bork the old DRM check thinger which looks to see if the correct CD is in the drive. This applies to Vista and up. There is a workaround for Vista thru 8.1, but it's considered unsafe. With a lot of techy knowledge it is possible to make the disc version work with Win 10. That's beyond my ability and one of our tech gurus here says it's not a good idea to do anyhow.

I personally just have a dedicated comp running XP Pro for my SC4 game. You could also look at dual booting with Linux and running the disc version of the game under Wine.

Hello -

Although I am not new to the forum, I've not been active in a while and recently decided to pull out my copies of SimCity4... after frustration, experimentation, re-purchasing a game I had already purchased twice before, and taking the plunge into diagnostics, I am proud to say I am finally back up and running - but the STEX is not...

I still remember a lot of the old tricks to play, have learned a few new ones, and look forward to becoming a contributing member to the forum. I'm saddened to see that @A Nonny Moose has passed away. He and I spent some time emailing back and forth as he was trying to teach me the basics about modding for SimCity4.

And now that I am back, once I get my feet wet again, I want to get back into modding once the STEX is back up and I have figured out what I need to download to begin modding again.

Hiya, @adsii1970.

Welcome back to the world of actively posting here. It's great when peeps pop back in to participate. I just read your Acer Monitors Guide and that's a nice job of writing a tutorial. *:)

For my introduction to you, I'm Cori. I'm a newer addition around these parts from when you were previously active.

hahaha! Yes, I could see that from your profile... but you've been extremely busy in that short period of time contributing to the community while I was chasing other things... so... thanks for carrying the torch and keeping the lights on! Without younger folk like you, well, this forum would have died...

And how "wee bit south" of Indy are you? I'm very near the Evansville, Indiana area!

Yes, I've already found a few problems, however, I have found with the help in this thread, some excellent things - Like the water power redegradiation [sp] , and that water filter system with added air pollution reduction.

I don't really need more than the basic stuff - with these new improvements. I'm quite happy playing and updating my old nation, and trying a few new things. I don't like the money cheat things. At the moment, I'm going through all my 48 cities and updating the power plants and water and air pollutions, (and with the increase population due to these, the health and edu). but importantly getting them all making a profit without neighbourhood deals. Once they all making money , I'll stick the cheetah speed on, and I'll start on the transportation system, which is probably one of my primary interests in the game.

As much as my desire would be to build cities of the complexity and brilliance that I seen with other players screenshots in here ,neither  my time constraints nor my patience allow me to gain this standard.

Just a wee, wee, wee little bit compared to Evansville. Like I work in the north part of Southport (a part of Indianapolis) and I can be there in 25 minutes. On the other hand, I can walk out my front door and be in a corn (or soy bean) field in two minutes so I have the best of both worlds.

That matches up with my play style. While I adore the MMP laden and CC filled cities of other peeps, I just like to play the game as a game.

You're very welcome back to the community. *:)

I can imagine the site being significantly different since you were last around. Both in the appearance and functionality wise, there have been various software upgrades and transitions even in my 5 years here. Of course, what makes Simtropolis such a special place to be a part of is how we all uniquely contribute. I'm still relatively new here in the big picture, and time does have a habit of ticking. It is nice to look back every so often in retrospect and try to gauge the measure of change.

Here's a few images I found from the archives which you may find familiar:

I'm pretty familiar with this forum software - from the user end I should add. I saw the images you posted. In complete honesty, I like the appearance of this forum better but miss the ability to search the files in the older forum... Seemed a lot easier than it is now.

Is the SCDevotion site still going or is it dead? I cannot seem to get my login to work...

Indeed. It's thankfully still going strong, and consists of 3 main sections:

  • Forums  (Discussions)
  • LEX  (Custom Content)
  • Wiki  (SC4 Knowledgebase)

As far as I'm aware, something to bear in mind is there's no unified login system between them. This is because separate software platforms are used, each requiring an account for membership privileges. The Wiki has editorial access limited by request, so I'd suggest asking Tarkus if this is an area you may be interested in. Maybe just give a brief background on your experiences as a returning member. From your ace Acer guide, I can already tell you've got a gift at writing articles. *:)

You'll probably be familiar with our equivalent here at ST being the Omnibus. This we have plans to give an overhaul to update broken links, images, and fix formatting flaws. Also the design and categorisation could really use some extra care and attention. It's on the ever-lengthening To Do list.

I noticed this last night after trying to find some SimGoober assets. And yes, I did a wee bit of grumbling.

I am flattered! I guess writing all those term papers and articles in pursuit of the Ph.D. actually paid off! *:P

I admit, even though I read your reply last night, I wanted to think about what you proposed before I reply. With that said, if I am going to invest that much of myself into another forum, I'd rather invest it here. This was the first SimCity forum I belonged to when I was a hardcore player and I do feel a debt of gratitude to this forum.

One of the projects I have thought about doing is on basics and history behind basic American city design... I just have to figure out where in this forum it would best fit and if it would be a project that would interest others...

Yup, very familiar. Even back when I was on the forum regularly, it had its issues...
