Hi,
As it is customary to first post in the newcomer's forum, here I go :)

I come to simtropolis on the wise advice of steam users who told me to share my modding endeavours here ! (I'll create a topic)

And I come to realise...This is my first post on simtrop's forum while I have registered in 2005...a whooping 12 years ago ! Oh my, what a journey ! at first a eager downloader of mods for SC4, and now it is my turn to attempt to mod the recent Cities Skylines:D
Anyway, on the personal level, I am 27, live in France and started modding as a way to get familiar with 3D modelling (I am a 2d artist attempting to get in the 3D animation business).
That's it ! See you on the forums :)

Hiya and welcome to posting in the forums! (I would say welcome to Simtropolis, but your membership pre-dates mine by a considerable margin.) *;)

I couldn't agree more with that advice... The modding community for C:S continues to grow and prosper. Although I'm not too familiar with it myself, there are lots of exciting projects going on there, so I'm sure any of your knowledge would be appreciated.

12 years on, it's never too late to make an opening post, and you're very welcome here on the forums! *:thumb:

I've been a lurker on these forums for about 3 months now, and I've recently decided that I'm interested enough in urban planning games to create an account here, rather than just browse the forums. Plus, it's a good opportunity to share my stuff (probably just cities for now, but I might try my hand at asset creation someday), as well as have a source of tech support that isn't "browse through 12 pages of google search results to find a solution to a problem nobody but you seems to have". I'm a relative newcomer to the whole city simulator scene (first game I came across in the genre was last August), but I figure that those who are willing to will be able to help me improve my urban design skills, although I think I'm somewhat well versed in the nuances so far. For now, I'm just trying out the forums, but if I have a good time I'll likely end up being a regular. So, see you round!

Hello and welcome to Simtropolis! *:8)

For technical assistance, or advice with gameplay, strategies or plugins, you've sure made a great choice by joining us. As you've probably noticed, there are so many helpful and friendly folks here, more than willing to lend a helping hand. Or if looking for any form of inspiration, the City Journals and Gallery provide an ideal showcase of the endless open possibilities these games bring.

Then especially in the case of SimCity 4, take a trip over to the STEX and explore the diverse world of custom content.

We're a community for all things city-building, and no matter what game you're into, they all share similar creative qualities. The best thing is you make up the rules, deciding how to use the artistic palette of a city tile, and shape your own mayoral objectives. Because in a way, this can be a form of digital art.

@MisterDigitalGuy

Hiya and welcome! I, too, lurked here for several months before I joined. Basically I'd ask Google about some difficulty or bug of SimCity 4 and I found I wound up here on ST about 70% of the time.  There is also the excellent SC4Devotion site with great content.

Since you mention asset creation I'm guessing you play Cities: Skylines.  In addition to the wonderful forums for that game, feel free to drop into our live Chat Room. @Abrams124 hangs out in the chat a lot and is one of our resident gurus for CSL.

Well, sort of. Most of my activity with the game has consisted of me watching other people build cities (I'd say it definitely has a talented community behind it), since I only purchased the game recently. As for asset creation, I've been meaning to learn the basics for a while now (such as modelling and texturing), but so far I've kind of procrastinated. I've also been doing a bit of looking into SC4 recently, but I don't own it at the moment since I've heard that it has issue on newer operating systems on Steam- so if anyone knows a way around these issues (or can suggest an alternative download source that doesn't seem to have this issue), that'd be much appreciated (side note- if this isn't the right place to post about game issues, just relay me to the appropriate thread).

The best version to get is from Gog.com. It'll run on any later Windoze version including 10. Other peeps have recently said the one from Steam is also fine. The one to stay away from is Origin. They've recently reverted to selling the unpatched (and unpatchable) version which is all but worthless.

Here is fine if you like. The new members thread and this whole forum is kind of a free-for-all about anything. (Within reason considering site guidelines, ofc.)

But, the SC4 General Discussion or the SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues forums are where many more peeps hang out and would be more likely to see your post(s) and/or questions for SimCity 4 related stuff. *;)

Don't worry too much about posting in the right or wrong place. I goofed on that in my early days and the Moderators will just move a new thread or post to where it ought to be. (Gives us something to do since everyone is so nice and helpful here we don't have much policing to do.)

I happened to post about this yesterday in this thread. *:read:

As @CorinaMarie rightly said, avoid the Origin version at all costs. The reason is because they're selling an outdated version (which is unpatchable), and have been unwilling to correct this mistake, even after multiple attempts of contact. GOG is a good candidate perhaps albeit for the current price. Also from Tarkus' post, sounds like Amazon is also still a possibility.

For Steam not working, I'm not sure on that one. Since it's a digital version, I wouldn't have thought compatibility would be an issue. Should it not work, I'm sure they'd be quick to offer a refund if requested (policy info).

With the CD version however, there is a problem on Windows (especially Win 10), which prevents it working because it doesn't support the included DRM.

I run a mac with Sierra and have the digital version off of Amazon, which runs on Steam. No issues with it.

Hiya, dutch guy!

I missed this section for a several months when I joined and by the time I found it I was pretty well known in the SC4 Discussion forum so I decided not to actually introduce myself in there. *

I'm just another Hoosier girl who has started playing SC4 a little over a year and a half ago.

I'm playing it for quite a few years now. My dad bought a copy back in 2005. In that time i knew little about the game. Never used plugins and such. Sinds 2015 i'm regulary playing the game and since i am trying to bulid and maintain more and more European styled cities. Is it worth noticing i'm taking the metro in front of the quite known Sint-Nicolaaskerk?

Thanks!

One silly question: do you happen to know what the dimensions of a cover photo need to be? Can't find it anywhere. Might just be blind though.

I did some quick searching and didn't find the dimensions easily. Hopefully @Cyclone Boom will stroll along with the info. (He knows everything about this site.)

Hi there,

The recommended dimensions for profile covers are:

1270 x 250

The more important value is the width, which is the maximum shown on profile pages. This will scale automatically to fit the area, including on the preview popup when hovering over someone's display name or avatar. So if not the optimum size, it may appear out of proportion. The only real exception is for solid colour backgrounds, where scaling isn't noticeable since it could stretch indefinitely.

The height allows a bit more flexibility, and I've found this can be extended to 270px with only the bottom being slightly hidden. But anything much less than 250px and the container may not be filled with the image (there'd be an empty gap).

Hope this helps! *:)

(I'll see if there's a way to add the dimensions to the upload window for quick reference.)

Note: Currently there's a re-emergence of a site bug, preventing the image from being repositioned (like so). Until this is resolved, the image will be fixed in place.

Hiya, Babyhead! Welcome to Simtropolis. *:)

I see from your posts you've found our CSL section. (No, I'm not using staff powers to snoop. Everyone can see that on each other's profile pages.) I play SC4 mostly, but recently got re-interested in SC3K too. Anyhow, drop by our chat and look for @Abrams124 sometime. He's often on in the early morning to mid afternoon Indiana time, so prolly adjust that by 5ish hours for your time on the other side of the pond. He's quite knowledgeable about Skylines and I've seen him be extremely helpful with tips and tricks of getting the game going.

Hello all,

I am AvgUsr. I am in my 30s. I used to play a LOT of SC2K when i was a child and I just bought C:S about 2 months ago from steam. Since then I have been building cities. I am gay, married to a console gamer and I also play WoW (although i have been taking a break).

Hiya, @AvgUsr. Welcome to Simtropolis! *:)

I'm Cori, a staff moderator and part of the welcoming committee here. I'm in my mid 20s and I play SC4. Anyhow, check out our Cities: Skylines forum for an overview of what we have for your game. There's lots of pics in the Cities: Skylines Showcase forum so that'll be a good place to share yours. And (since you mentioned it) you might have some interest in The Simtropolis Closet Thread - deux! topic.

Enjoy your stay with us and feel free to ask questions if anything confuzzles you.

Edit: I just checked your profile and I see you've already found (and posted in) some CSL threads. Just ignore that part of my welcome message. *

Risky. You can't expect to be wise before you are 60. Okay, on women wisdom might come earlier. Maybe on 40, 45.

But who wouldn't appreciate it ... if Simtropolis moderators were wise people?

You're doing much more than this. F.e. you made me really smile now. And I'm not the only one. So you make people smile. And you help them. And they feel better. You encourage them. So they go ahead. And you dig into problems and investigate. So you guide people. So they find their way.

Hello all! :-)

I'm SimCityHawk. I have played SimCity 3000 since I was 6 years old back in 1999. Now I am a 24-year old university student, but I am still playing this game from time to time.

I have created lots of cities in SC3000 during the years. Back in 2013 I had a lot of fun trying to recreate real cities of the world. I also created a YouTube-channel to show it to others(SimCityHawk), but somehow I forgot all about that. Yesterday I uploaded some of my cities on this webpage. I'm thinking about reuploading them again next week with better description and pictures, since I do not have a very good internet connection on this computer (I'm on vacation atm. :-)). I also have many other cities (real and fictional) on another computer at home, that I would love to upload if you guys are interested.

SimCity 3000 means a lot to me. I have tried giving the other SimCity games a shot, but I always seem to have the most fun with SC3000. I don't know, but there is just something about this game that makes me relax and enjoy the moment. Maybe it has something to do with nostalgia - the music, the colours and the sounds of this game reminds me of good times.

Anyways I'm glad I found this place. I'm thinking about beginning to work on building new cities again, so this forum seems like a good hangout for me.

Cheers!

PS. I'm from Denmark :-)

Whenever you play a particular game for a long, long time it becomes a part of you. And that's comfortable. So, I'd guess it is the nostalgia that brings you back to it. I'm sure you've found our SimCity 3000 forum. It had a burst of activity when we first set it up as its own category back in early May. Recently it's died off so it could use someone like you who is dedicated to the game to breathe some life back into it.

I noticed those, and yes, please do update them with better descriptions and pictures. I was going to mention that to you when I saw them, but didn't get around to it. You won't need to re-upload tho. You can just edit and update the ones that are there. *;)

Thanks for sharing, and when you get a moment to upload some images that would be great.

STEX files allow screenshots to be added and shown as snapshots at the top. This has the advantage of also appearing on the category listings (for example). With each file, this can be done by opening the  File Actions Menu.png  menu and clicking Upload a New Version.

As Corina said, you don't actually have to upload the city (*.sc3) files again, but this page allows screenshots to be uploaded and assigned to the file once saved. One image per file is sufficient, and they don't have to be anything fancy or high resolution. Just to give people an idea of what the cities are before downloading.

All in your own time, and let us know if you'd like any assistance with this.

You're very welcome here, and I hope you enjoy the site. *:8)
