Started playing SimCity in the mid 90''s and eventually lost interest.

It came up in conversation recently and I had some cash in my Steam wallet and they had it on sale for $5- so here I am.

The only thing I miss about the old game was placing 3D underground water pipes. But in SC4 it's easier and more efficient.

Hi Rob and welcome to Simtropolis!

That's an ideal opportunity to pickup SC4 and that $5 will go a very long way to having mayoral fun for a long time to come. *:8)

Welcome too, and we hope you enjoy playing Skylines.

There's still occasionally some people who play CSL and post in the forums. Anyone interested in city-building is very welcome here.

Hello all,

I just downloaded SimCity 4 Deluxe from Steam, and I'm excited to start getting into it again, having not played in maybe 25 years... It was always a go to when I was a kid. I watched a few videos on YouTube and dwyrin led me here.

I'm really interested in learning how to download in install regions other than the few supplied in the game. There's so much to look at here, I'm not sure where to start.

Cheers

Hi @obi wan kaczynski and welcome to Simtropolis. *:)

Sounds great to get back to SC4 again, and it is very possible to return after a lengthy absence. It's the benefit of a hobby which is possible to return to whenever.

May the force be with you on your galactic mayoral adventures! *:thumb:

Hello All!

I was a fan of SimCity back when it made it's debut and it was a great source of fun for my teenage son and I.  Well, now he is long grown up and gone, and I still have the game CDs, LOL!    Simptropolis is an amazing site and I am so impressed with the many contributions and knowledge of the members.  I am pleasantly overwhelmed ;)  It's been many years since I played, but with this site, I think I will enjoy the game again and at a whole different level.

Hi @MsEssBee and welcome to Simtropolis. *:)

That's great you've decided to return to SC4 and you've had experience of the game for many years. The brilliant thing is how SC4 can be such a timeless hobby, and indeed the community with all the custom content enhances the artist's palette available.

It's cool you still have the original game discs! A little thing to consider is on Windows 10 or higher, these won't work due to format the installer has. Basically Microsoft prevented the mechanism from working which allows legacy titles like SC4 from installing from the CDs (the technical term is SafeDisc).

There's quite a bit of info inside this topic, which also explains about ways around this by redeeming the game code for free from Origin, or more recommended would be to purchase SC4 from a reputable retailer like GOG or Steam (especially during their periodic seasonal sales, where it can be available for as little as $4.99). This would then ensure the game is fully patched, because from Origin there's doubt as they offer the game unpatched and it cannot be updated. This has been known to happen for those who buy the game from Origin, even though the free redeemable version has sometimes been available fully updated. A few users even reported it "downgrading" back to unpatched again.

For me I use the GOG version, so that's what I personally recommend if needing to purchase the game again.

And of course, all this only applies if running Win 10 or above. Otherwise your original CDs should be good to go, even after all these years. *;)

I agree with this advice   I have tried the Origin version with poor results and have absolutely no problems with the GoG version  I did try to install my original discs but had an issue with re-registering them;   welcome back to SC4

Hi everyone,

Long time lurker. Not played SC4 for many years. Just picked up the Steam version and currently trying my hand at mods. Big fan of the SC series as well as Cities Skylines. Hope to be a regular here.

Thank you all for the friendly welcome!

Sim-ple Jack, you made me laugh.  It seem what I believed was a beautiful mandella, actually does resemble a pizza, LOL!

Cyclone Boom, I can't thank you enough for your advice and the helpful link.  You saved me from an evening of frustration from troubleshooting to the point of tears.  Microsoft grrrh!  What I appreciate about GoG is offering the choice of playing through their installer app or direct download for offline.  Thank you!

Scanners_87, I considered Cities Skylines and read several reviews.  I',m interested in your thoughts between the two.

I've spent hours on this site in absolute amazement at the contributions and the management of this site.  It's very impressive.  Member's effort and talent from years ago brings me plenty of joy today *:)

Hi @Scanners_87 and welcome to Simtropolis. *:8)

Sounds excellent, and you've certainly come to the right place with the SC4 community still going strong! We hope you enjoy it here also.

The Steam version is a perfectly viable alternative to the GoG version too. Just depends on personal preference really, and they're both digital and fully patched.

Sweet! *:thumb:

That makes me smile, and I'm relieved I mentioned about it.  (We certainly don't want tears!)

If you do decide to go for the direct download version, I made a quick video tutorial showing where to locate this.
I think you'll have found it already though from the sounds of things, but there's the link just in case. *;)

Of course, we're all here to help if ever we can be of assistance in your mayoral journey too.

That's wonderful you're already enjoying your adventures with exploring. *:)

Hello all and kind greetings...

I'm back from a hiatus of a few years, ready to learn new skills and perhaps take my SimCity 4 gameplay up to a new level.

My handle has changed.  Ya see, I got married last fall, and engraved on the inside of my wedding ring it says "Her Monster"...

So there you have it; and me...

Ello ello.

I used to play SimCity 4 when I was barely able to comprehend what a videogame was. I saw it was on sale and decided to buy it again so that I could appreciate it for what it was. Just starting to play it again, I still think it's one of the greatest games I've ever played. Unsure if I'll be a regular, but I'll certainly browse the wonderful collection we have here.

Hello! I used to play SC4 years and years ago, in fact I used to have a Simtropolis account probably about 15+ years ago but I don't have access to my old e-mail so here we are. Been wanting to get back into the game, very excited to see how much has happened since then! In fact it's been 5 years since I last played the steam version and I remember when I was younger and bought the deluxe edition when it was new. Anyway, happy to be back!

Hello! I've been downloading files from the exchange for the longest time now, so I've decided to make an account and maybe upload a few pictures of what I've been working on? I've been playing SC4 for a long time, almost always on Macs –so there's been a lot of frustration and troubleshooting along the years. But hey, now the App Store version works more or less fine? Except for the resolution, that is.

Unfortunately, I have to take hiatus again. I wish I woke up earlier. Too bad, I woke up just before I decided to enter entrance exam again. I'm so sorry for my bad time management. I'm really struggling with my college entrance. I couldn't get what I want. Hopefully I can get it this year, so you can see me again later this year. If not, you have to wait it till late next year. I have to do so much stuff, including preparing for physique and psychotest because I'm entering a special uni. I'm running out of time. That's why I take a (very) long hiatus. Don't worry you can still send your questions here or

And for the walkable city challenge, I might still able to submit mine. Just wait. If not, I might run out of time
