Download your GOG games offline as standalone installer files, without GOG Galaxy. 

This can be useful to ensure one has a source copy, as opposed to relying on the GOG Galaxy client or other download managers. For those who are interested in purchasing SC4 from GOG (or might've done so already), it's an important consideration. It makes certain the game is downloaded in its purest form as Maxis intended, without any other superficial software layers to otherwise complicate matters.

This explains the steps to obtain the offline installer for SC4 and also other GOG games you may have.

Most games should allow this (including SC3000 and SC2000), although there might be some which are an exception. Once you've obtained the installer file for any given game, it'd be a wise move to make a backup copy on your local storage media in more than one place. An example would be on flash drives, or ideally a more robust method of storage such as an external HDD separate from your computer.

What I like most about offline installers, is that it gives me the consumer, control over those games I've purchased. Just as 'keeping the disks' has done for 25 years, it means I can still go back and play my old titles again whenever I choose too. If more games were available by such methods, I would buy more digital games, sadly the default is DRM and other enforced crap like forced updates. At least my copy of SC4 is mine to use forever in whichever way I see fit.

Yeah, I absolutely agree about that approach too. While it's understandable why publishers add DRM to items, it seems like one only purchases modern games for a limited "lease" period. Only up until the inevitable day when an update breaks something, or the entire system could eventually collapse. The whole attachment to online functionality too, which SC4 proves isn't necessary to sustain a solid gameplay platform. Thankfully we can all just enjoy what SC4 is as Maxis designed.

It is a relief GOG distributes these legacy titles in such form, and hopefully this continues. The assurance how in decades time from now, even as computer technology moves through the ages, there's still hope we can play timeless classics as SC4 is. That freedom is sure worth every extra penny in the long run.

I wouldn't really mind launchers and DRM as long as they wouldn't force mod-breaking updates. It's really that simple.

They literally owe their success to this method and boast non-DRM policy whenever they can.

Besides, GOG is a part of a larger holding, which already operates the "regular" online projects, so the hopes are they will keep GOG the way it is.

This way, they offer diversity within their corporate landscape, so I guess it's a very marketing stuff to do!
