Cori's Place - A work in progress ...

(To find guides I'm writing, scroll down to the Table of Contents in this post.)

Hiya! I'm glad you stopped by. *:)

My RL name is Corina Marie. No, I will not tell my last name. I went by Rina for a lot of my life. Now, I like Cori. Any are ok with me. If you feel one expresses me to you better, feel free to use it. Some peeps like me as CM. Tho many will skip the capitalization. Whatever. *;)

Anyhow, I've landed in Simtropolis and I love it here. (Tho, don't tell anyone, but I've been getting a bit nitpicky in a few threads. Mostly in Challenge Ideas Bank. You boys, and I mean the stereotypeness of my statement to be taken good heartedly, really could clean this place up a wee bit. It reminds me of how my room would appear at times mom would highly suggest I clean it up.)

I'm a former Diablo II, LOD lover. I've written the definitive guide for a PvM Melee Sorceress (including UT & DC in 4 & 5 player games) on Jsp. I have my own guild there too. It's real laid back. Sometimes we post every few days. Sometimes a week or so goes by without any updates. I'm simply considering my journal thread here an extension of Cori's Milieu on Simtropolis. (Hope y'all don't mind.) Here's my Guild Charter there:

01-01_CorisGuildCharter.jpg.e2c2c6083900fc995d86b55b7c8f3715.jpg

So, consider my thread here as: All Public Welcome to view or (by joining Simtropolis) post in.

I'll be continually updating my reserved 15 posts for a long while so feel free to skip my thread whilst I get organized. My current intention is 10 or so of my reserved posts are tutorials to my younger, less knowledgeable self. Right now it's all a mess.

(And, yes, I have posted some of these initial pics in other threads here.) *;)

How you can help: Add a reply in this thread saying which elements were beneficial to your understanding of something or was an enjoyable story element. Or, how a particular idea I've posted could be fleshed out more. Or, just adulation for my attempts to provide material for neophytes to this Simtropolis Site, SC4 Division. (Those little <3's let me know if anyone is interested in seeing more from me.) You get the idea. *:blush:

xxxxx older version but some keep stuff - to sort

Multiple ideas afloat in here. I've reserved 15 posts to limit myself to making each something major I wished I could've read when I first got here. Do note I hope others benefit too. Just keep in mind I wrote it for my own interests. If yours are different, my procedures might not be of use for your particular desires.

My basic idea is to document what I learned as I learn it as a reference for later when I forget how to do something. There will also be the story (currently started in my post 2). I plan to tell of my game's persona as she has moved from one game to another as if it were a time and space warp from one to the other. (Or whatever transition makes sense as I flesh out my ideas.)

    02 - Chapter 1 (background stuff)

    \/\/\/\/ 2016.04.17.20.49 Moving stuff from post 1 to here.

    Here I will attempt to combine my story of entering SimCity 4 along with a science fiction approach to my game persona's prior adventures in other games. For instance, my story here will tell the tale of Princess Rina Periwinkle. She is a combination of all versions of melee Sorceress I've played since I was a prepubescent girl. To give myself plenty of time to play at whichever speed I like, I've decided storywise in SC4 to consider their adult age to be 21 + their iteration. So, a Rina the 4th would be 25 years old.

    Let's start with CorinaMarie my first successful online melee Sorceress. She appears only here as she becomes Her Royal Majesty, Queen CorinaMarie in the world of SimCity 4 and is only referenced as being far distant both in distance and time with which to communicate. (Storywise, she has retired to a planet in the Starflight or the Hyperspeed galaxy. (Note: wiki says Hyperspeed is a video game. I'm vaguely aware it was released that way later in its production life. Anyhow, mine was on PC and I'll decide later where she is if I flesh out that part of a story.)

    Here's the last public photo of her from a fashion display show / op ed:

    5961924750e8a_02-01_01AdultPicD2.jpg.b789695703e5d0a8530dab0c3cf5c6d8.jpg<--- CorinaMarie@Jsp the ultimate melee Sorceress by Cori.

    (Note: You'll have to be a member of Jsp to see my above linked profile and/or guides I've written there.)

    She presented her perspective along side the galactic encyclopedia entry and did thoroughly endorse the brilliance of the Treachery Rune Word as well as promoting the absolutely sheer Dusk Shroud (the lightest, most elegant of the elite lightweight armors). Sales of Quilted Armor (exact same great look, but at mere double digit gold prices) exploded in Normal level games, rivaling the Breast Plate in units sold.

    For reference, here she is wearing a Unique Light Plate. The issue I have with it, besides being ugly, and with all others past the low end lightweight armors is those horrible, pointy shoulders.

    5961924812355_02-02_04IckyStyle.jpg.b7d4736a41fbccc83f008c14473d4134.jpg<--- Heavenly Garb.

    Go raising your arms to cast spells, and SCRATCH, owie! But, I digress yet again.

    So, storywise, I'm hoping I can write something fun for her daughter, Rina Periwinkle, as she becomes ... what's it called?, Mayor of every, uhm, city tile in an entire region. Note: I use . as my mayor name. (That's the dot or period in the vernacular of RL.) Obscures less of the Region screen when names are on.

    /\/\/\/\ - End move 2016.04.17.20.50

    WHOAMI?

    Well, first let me introduce CorinaMarie from my world of Diablo II, LOD. This pic is from a fashion shoot she did. (For the d2ists who might read this, you'll notice the shoulder pads are the only visual clue between naked and her armor. It's the lightest weight one of it's class. Whilst wearing this outfit ,she can solo bop all three Ubers as well as Diablo Clone in an eight player game tho 4 or 5 is more preferred timewise. (She does add a hat for UT. It's ugly.)

    5961924750e8a_02-01_01AdultPicD2.jpg.b789695703e5d0a8530dab0c3cf5c6d8.jpg

    This next shot is at a younger age. She is a great tactician and utilizes not only her sidekick, but the terrain and appurtenances added by civilization's needs.

    5961924932a6e_02-04_02BabyPicD2.jpg.5fd8b6c3db5b8fc96f392572f2a6ae24.jpg

    (Too be re-sequenced.) Here's a pic of her daughter's (Rina Periwinkle's) house. It's the one right on the SE corner. (She loves the pretty, pink bricks.)

    5961924a13c3c_02-05_03SmTwnHouse.jpg.3a1d64923768efd9e00c62b8e372a58a.jpg

    Rina is also a brilliant tactician and will assume the roll of Most Able Regional Interim Empress. (The job will eventually pass on to others.) She knows well the need for efficient movement of groups of peeps so she will attempt to design her civilizations with that in mind.

    Rina in my SC4 narrative will be the embodiment of my last, ultimate builds using a faceted armor of my own design. She will be considered 21 the moment she vanquished the absolute last of all the evil in Sanctuary, the d2 world. (Now, for those familiar with the game, she bopped every single monster at least once over the months I played her. The game dynamics make it near impossible to do that in one game session.)

    ANCIENT HISTORY

    The Periwinkle family was granted all of the land in this region by Queen Corina. Having establish a base camp in the wilderness of the upper NW corner, they promptly named their future town: Podunk. (See crappy picture of region.) The river they discovered is too big to ford and rumor has it little Rina saw a bird at the same moment her father sighted the river. The coincidentally perfect overlap between his slow draw statement, "That's   a   big   river." and Rina's exclamation, "Pigeon!" gave it its name. Over time settlers arrived and boats were built. They explored up and down the Big Pigeon River establishing tiny towns with populations between 5 and 6. One might be 7, most are 5. (I plopped a windmill, a car-n-passenger ferry and zoned a 1 x 2 residential parcel before going to the next city tile. The Gambling Ordinance was enabled so the cash flow is positive.)

    When they discovered the Lonely Mountain (hug for JRRT and the Hobbit) and the other river, they named it the Little Pigeon River. As the two merge and flow south it's just the plain ol' Pigeon River. The slow moving river flowing in from the east was dubbed the Lazy River. Tiny towns were eventually established in most river accessible tiles.

    As the years passed, Podunk grew into a small farming community.

    Meanwhile in the Pleasant Town territory:

    Subsequent to the Corites landing, EvilSmokeStacks invaded from the north. (This disturbing news arrived at the cartographer's shop before the territory name Pleasant Town was submitted for recording at the assessor's office. The discrepancy between the two office's documents is not only a very sore subject, it causes no end of confusion.)

    5961924f748a9_02-12_EvSEvTown.jpg.4d769a0fdd00e04891669a9bffd78941.jpg

    The farming town grew with the odd preference for being farther and farther from the river. Most likely it was the suppressed fear of future EvilSmokeStack advancement which propelled the southernly expansion. Obviously, the ESS did not respect the land, which ofc, implies many other amoral aspects of their society.

    Over in Little Pigeon River:

    They discovered something that was described by the explorers as a Large, Stone Cat. It was deemed to be so ancient that ancient really didn't feel adequate to describe it's age. Like it was way, way older than that.

    Word is being sent back to the home kingdom addressed to Her Royal Majesty, but the distance (in addition to the rough terrain with nary a road between here and there) means a reply might take eons. From the homeland to here is currently well over a year's journey. And a significant amount of the trip can be unpleasant. The scholars are  unlikely to arrive in this region until a rail line has been built from their extremely distant home to Podunk. They would also, most assuredly, require a road from Podunk to this feline structure before they would deign to travel so far.

    This area was officially designated a Restricted Park Zone. (Any unzoned ground in Coriland is, by default, Zoned Regular Park.) Notice the subtle difference in acronym order? RPZ vs ZRP. For clarity it is recommended to use them in written communications as Rpz with the emphasis being on the Restricted and the other as zrP for the default Park zones.

    Having received the news of the evil ESS intrusion, The Council of Podunk declared Horseshoe Bend to be the site of a Fortified City.

    The city limits of Fortified City were hastily drawn.

    ^ Note: You can kinda see the boundaries better in the tiny overview map there in the lower left of the s/s.

    Unprecedented decrees were issued. :O

    The first and foremost being that a military shall be formed with the sole intention of defense. It was named the Region's Institutionalized Neutral Alliance in honor of Rina Periwinkle who had reached the age of maturity and who would take charge.

    The second decree delighted about half of the denizens of the region. (And, dear reader, please no off color comments about this.) Clothing was banned in all public places and reproduction was highly encouraged. Very highly.

    (Cooler than the near year round temperate weather being the exception for apparel as well as leaky times for one gender and a support strap for the other.)

    <Picture Omitted> *:P

    The once equal distribution of work became skewed. Those without a swollen belly took on more and more responsibility for farming and for the necessary accelerated pace of manufacturing. The baby makers began losing their voice in official discussions. *:(

    It then came about that mothers were frequently honored in frivolous ceremonies in inverse proportion to their declining status in community decisions. It was not a happy time for many. However, as time marched on they would slowly forget the days of old and resign themselves to the new expectations of society at large.

    If a war does occur, the Corites feel winning is the better option.

    The old saying, igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum was resurrected and translated as: Therefore whoever desires peace, let him prepare for war. ( Quoting: Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus btw )

    Story continues in my post 5 atm. (I'll sort everything eventually once I see what my muse creates.)

    Rina is the daughter of Queen Corina. She ... (story begins in my 2nd post.) *;)

    xxxxx

    INTRO

    Hiya! *:D

    Welcome to my ongoing story of the town of Podunk in the region of Podunk. Seems redundant to the local denizens so they refer to their town as Nowhere. But, outsiders should refrain from using said nomenclature.;) And they call the entire region Coriland in honor of Queen Corina. Visitors are highly encouraged to use this name. It is a politely ignored faux pas if you don't tho. The map does indeed label both the town and the region as Podunk.

    Random Ideas

    1. Consider a moved-in-sim's income to be their EQ * 1000.

    2. Consider their adult age to be 21 + their iteration. So, Rina the 4th is 25 years old.

    3. Find software to add cartoonish bubbles for what a Sim is saying in my pictures.

    Random notes:

    People in Coriland typically have the same number of names as they do here in my area of the real world. First, middle, and last. The difference in my story is that boys inherit their last name from the father and girls from their mother.

    2016.04.07.17.54 Ah, here we go. Random notes. Always getting lost when I do projects.

    Scenario Games are a pre-designed city tile in which certain goals are to be met. (For those who the phrase plain vanilla send shivers up their spine, you might want to close your eyes now and then if you read my stuff.)

    Rules to be a Cori Approved Scenario

    In the beginning, one must provide valid linkys to each mod, add-on, plug-in and whatever else terminology I'm leaving out due to lack of personal data. Ideally one or more sentences describing why that particular person chose those combinations to illustrate whatever it is that they wish to express.

    The premise here being they'd be ready to download and run on the base version rsc204 is writing.

    I know (i just know) there's one or more peeps here who could dream these up. So, I propose someone create, maybe by contest, the best Sim Tropolis Tile (see raw idea in post 15). Use 4 x 4 even tho pics in mine are the tiny tile.

    SC4 uses a checksum system, so any edit whatsoever to a save file will cause SC4 to ignore the city, because the checksum would not be correct. As has been stated there is no fix for such issues.

    Bear in mind, switching focus (using another application/window) whilst saving is known to cause problems. As is using either the Save and Exit to Region or Save and Quit options. It's always safer to simply use Save, then exit/quit without saving.

    2016.04.07.08.34 - Transition (need to move to before Ancient History as Ancienter History)

    A portion of my story side of all this mess will be portrayed using D2 images. (in ancient history section) After all evil in Sanctuary had been banished, the Melee Sorceress clan became region and city managers.  Who better to understand building placement for rapid movement of various size groups of peeple and devices?

    Self note: Check if whole medieval time frame style buildings are available. Also, can those semi trucks and modern cars be changed to horseys and buggys? :unsure: If not, AOE will do fine for story images.

    2016.04.09.18.43 - Story Outline as it Relates to the prior lives of my game persona.

    The galaxy in which my story takes place happens to be the Milky Way aka  ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha. (I suspect @Prophet42 is a D.A. fan since that 42 is the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything. My fav is: they hung in the air in much the same way bricks don't.)

    <find that you-are-here postcard>

    Games I intend to use to illustrate the SF portion are Microsoft Space Simulator and the game Starflight. I have several softwares for the terrain stuff. I'm pretty sure both of my VistaPro's have greyscale capability tho I'll have to double check as well as see what CC2's Cartographer and Fractal Terrains do.)

    I might use SimEarth, (tired of doing the linky embeds if ya had't noticed, you're own your own if curiosity strikes you), SimCity, 2000, 3000, 4 (ofc!), Outpost (the original, I got the sequel too but never got into it), Sid Meier's Civilization 2, Age of Empires 2 (age of conquers?), Diablo 2, LOD, TheSims, ...

    x

    Ok, for story elements I'll want similar (ideally identical) maps in the following games and softwares:

    1. Age of Empires 2 (age of kings?)

    2. Civilization 2

    3. VistaPro

    4. Fractal Terrains

    5. Cartographer

    6. x any others?

    Then need to learn the grayscale import into SC4 from wherever I create it.

    x

    2016.04.24.19.13 - New TOC in outline form.

    1. Building the computer. (may or may not do)

    2. OS type and version and patchedness

    3. Game version - good and bad and ok

    4. Getting to 640 / 641

    5. The essential fixes. (Just patching the broken stuff.)

    6. CAM ?

    7. NAM ?

    8. Tree MOD ? Slope MOD ?

    9. Organization and Back Ups

    x. Etc.

    2016.04.25.17.58 - From the newcomer's perspective:

    • How do I find things?
    • How do I post?
    • Oh. Well then, where do I sign up?
    • How do I keep track of things? Like my posts?
    • How do I do an embedded (masked url) linky?
    • Which version / vendor is best?
    • How to patch just the errors? (which makes the solid base for everything else)
    • Mapping programs?
    • Slope?
    • Tree?
    • NAM
    • CAM
    • Themes?

    See, being totally new can be a confuzzling time for someone dropping in for the very first time. I took 5 - 7 months to getting acquainted with a few parts of Simtropolis. I hadn't any idea at the time I'd wind up as a member. I simply did Google searches each time something went goofy and during those dozen or so lurking adventures. I'm guessing I got my answer on ST 80% of the time.

    What order does that need to be installed in?

    Did I miss anything else? (Me, later, I know need to pick a tree mod from the beginning and follow a specific routine if I decide to change trees.)

    What we really, really need here in the SC4 division is the beginner's guide to getting the game up and going to the point they are happy with it. My Vital Links was an attempt to get peeps to share their setups. It died for lack of further participation.

    Story stuff.

    Sacred valley protected residential city. (finish dam first)

    ESS expansion.

    Road network from Podunk town to Horseshoe Bend.

    Build the fortress town in HB.

    Another ancient relic discovery in a new inner tile. (it'll be a pyramid) - Started. See post 15.

    2016.04.04.17.53 - Possible Outline of what goes where.

    I have reserved 15 posts. Things I might use like other games to illustrate my story (depending on the scope of it). Age of Empires, Civilization 2, VistaPro, Campaign Cartographer 2, CC2's Fractal Terrains, Total 3D Home Deluxe, Utopia, The Sims, Sim Earth, and maybe some others. I might make my post's titles correspond to what software I'll use to illustrate what story element. Who knows? At 10 zillion thoughts a second, I've also been known to get sidetracked while attempting large projects.

    More games I might use to illustrate things: Star Flight, MS Space Simulator, Robot Odyssey, Zeliard, King's Quest 1, Larry 1 & 5ish? (the one with the multiple zig-zap river deaths), Hyperspeed, Game of Life (my own hand-coded or just grab one), and prolly more as they occur to me. (837 boxes some stuff these might be in, ok, at least 150, seriously).

    Backlog of things I might want to install. (Awaiting the guide rsc and I are writing before proceeding.)

    * WARNING *

    These are merely in the order in which I found them. They are NOT in proper order for installation. Like 8 or 11 of them are considered Fixes to install before anything else. All linkys should be valid. If you find one that's not, a reply in this thread would be appreciated. If you have the updated link too, that'd be even better. ;)

    Modular and filler sets:

    On 4/28/2016 at 11:19 AM, Edvarz said:

    Of course! for illustration purposes here are my four favorite modular and filler sets:

    Paeng's Parks, MGB Diagonal Fillers, IRM IHT Fillers (you can also check out the IRM itself and the I-M and I-D filler sets), KOSC Modular parkings

    With simple small lots you can create extensive public, industrial or parking spaces on your city or fill gaps between buildings with details like alleyways and parking lots, and it really helps with realism and aesthetics (and, I understand, having large open spaces helps with game performance too). A big part of achieving a pleasant look for your cities is letting go of the idea of cramming as many sims as possible in one city tile and instead having some open spaces both in residential and commercial districts and on the industrial ones.

    If you mean having pavement on your diagonal networks instead of grass then this mod may be of use. If you mean extending the pavement on diagonal sidewalks to avoid the jagged look, then the diagonal fillers I listed above may be of use.

    Linkys to stuff about Demand:

    On 4/27/2016 at 3:50 PM, rsc204 said:

    To get demand working, you need to be on top of the fundamentals of the simulator. Here is some really good information on that. For some more technical explanation of demand, see here.

    I can also thoroughly recommend this tutorial, it's the one that helped me to finally unlock how the game works and create my first successful region. Even though it's not complete, it will give you a clear understanding of the foundations of successful region building.

    One thought occurs. Have you fully patched your game (not required if you have a digital version)? Also, did you install correctly the I-HT fix? Without either, you could run into some serious problems, without the latter you simply will never get enough R$$$ sims to make the simulator work.

    SC4 isn't a GPU intensive game, not being 3D and designed for 12 year old machines. As such, the cheapest GPU you can buy today will run it acceptably. The real issue is driver compatibility, not raw performance. As a 32-bit application, it can not utilise more than 3-4GB RAM. An SSD will help with loading times and make the game run more smoothly, to a point.

    Now we get to the real problem. SC4 eats CPU's alive, because SC4 can not utilise more than a single core without becoming very unstable. Meanwhile, systems are not getting faster on a per-core basis. Technology has developed around the multiple-core approach. As the population rises, the amount of math the simulator needs to perform increases to levels far beyond what even 12 years of CPU improvements can cope with. So whilst 1m sims is likely possible, don't expect fluid performance at that point.

    Finding stuff:

    On 3/14/2016 at 2:15 PM, Cyclone Boom said:

    Between site upgrades, the link formats have changed on the STEX. For example, they used to be in these forms:

    www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=12345

    www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=12345

    And now from ST v7.0 onwards:

    community.simtropolis.com/files/file/12345-/

    On the older links, you can sometimes copy the file ID number into the new format shown above. If the ID hasn't changed, this will take you to the same file. Originally the older links had an auto-redirect, but this is no longer recognised. However, this is something which might be possible to add back server-side (I'll check with Dirktator).

    Ok, got my space. Feel free to comment if you are so inclined. ;)

    And, feel free to track tpyos for me. I'm a perfectionist at heart but I have the severe disability that my mind functions considerably faster than my fingers can type. Like I'll be seeing what I'm going to say one or two sentences ahead and entire words or thoughts get left out. I read and re-read often searching for just those ill written disasters.

    Also, my current intention is to only add and alter content in my 15 reserved posts until I have something I feel is really presentable. You are welcome to read any or all of it as I go along. :)

    Trying to use vocabulary (likely wrongly) to tie in the hard science of my game character's life. Basically the "me" who lived vicariously thru said in-game-toon or an imaginary visual of what said character might look like for text based and perspective-in interfaces.

    So, as part of Einstein's relativistic universe, my game persona has been to different galaxies. She is manipulated by the RL me so to her I'm a member of a type III Civilization using the Kardashev scale.  She's lived in the Starflight and Hyperspeed universes. And spent over a decade in Sanctuary of Diablo 2. She also spent a couple years in Age of Empires. It's extremely likely I'll illustrate my story using AOE unless there are good, similar building mods on STEX. (I haven't gotten to doing a serious search yet. Until I get my sc4 game patched up, it's pointless to get more toys.) The sc4 version of the same city layout will handle the numerical stuff. Like I can pretend the sc4 plain vanilla buildings were depicted in terms off planet peeps could to relate better. (Like it's an interstellar or intergalactic status report to Elders on Trantor or such. So, I could play sc4 quite well as-it-is for a while. (Still do want to get patched up to NAM, tho.)

    Ok. Looks like I got side tracked again. Back to the chaotic hair guy. He's the dude who was the lead thinker of the Einstein-Rosen Bridge aka Wormhole. As a type 3 civ, I can correlate my game persona's adventures with various back stories for settlers in my upcoming sc4 creations. (check back some time)

    2016.04.14 - Contest idea. (Draft to post in contest thread.)

    Multi-phase.

    First Contest:

    30 days. Using only plain vanilla, show the best layout to represent Simtropolis as a region. Size of region to be what fits edge to edge on a 4:3 ratio monitor using 1024 x 768 resolution. Choosing this for consistency to tie in later with my essay on building a plenty-good-enough-computer to run sc4 well for nearly free.  (Like, many of the parts are ones peeps have kept because it's too good to throw away, but they personally prolly won't ever use it again. It has served its time with them.)

    Anyhow, 1st contest is the best layout with each major area of Simtropolis web site represented by the appropriate whatever in the game. The tile for Simtropolis Home will be a 4x4 blue in config.bmp. It will have a Space Port. Then the subcategories of City: Skylines, SimCity (2013), SimCity 4 Players Forum, and the rest from Forums will have a big airport. These will be 2x2 yellow in config.bmp. They will connect to the blue major tiles. The Forums will be another 4x4 blue and have whatever is appropriate there. Red single dot tiles will contain subcategories and will likely only connect to yellows, but could connect to blue if desired.

    Basically what we are looking for here is the transportation network and amount of land the buildings will need. The main tile (Simtropolis Home) will have some sort of visitor's center. Both a big building (mine'll prolly be a huge castle) and accessory buildings so visitors can decide where to go once they debark from their interplanetary and/or interstellar trip. This tile will likely focus on the tourism crowd.

    2nd Contest:

    Individual tile for Simtropolis Home. Now add in NAM and CAM and the essential fixes as the only allowed tools. What you may have used to show traffic in the first contest, like a railroad or interstate or whatever can now be replaced with any NAM stuff.  Here we focus on the zoning and major buildings and transportation.

    2nd contest co-contests:

    All the yellow and red tiles as separate sub contests.

    3rd Contest:

    Time to add in anything and everything to one's heart's content.

    And to whomever runs the contests here, let them add and tweak these rules for anything which I either left out or should have explained better. (I'm submitting this to hopefully spark peeps imagination. So, really the first contest should be how to write the rules for what Cori envisions.) ;)

    Another option is fake zoning. Zone next to a road or street whilst holding the CTRL key, then still holding CTRL, drag the zone "through" the street. When you let go of the mouse, it may not look like it's done anything. But you should see that sidewalks appear where they previously did not. Note how this provides power, it's a very useful trick.

    Try zoning different types of zoning and see the difference ;).

    To be clear, the Plugins folder located in the Program Files directory makes it so that all the plugins are used no matter what user account you are playing the game in. The one in the Documents directory is if you only want your plugins to be used when you play SC4 on that account. In other words, it's not global. Also, if you keep all of your plugins in the Program Files directory, they will all be removed if you ever uninstall SC4 from your computer, whereas this will not happen if you keep them in the Documents directory.

    2016.04.10.16.23 - Grayscale Maps

    So, I'm reading this article about maps. It states: The grayscale bitmap is imported into the game. This is done using a special cheat dialogue in the region mode. More on that is found later in this article.

    No. The word "cheat" only appears once in that article.

    Still need to find out how to do it.

    While my area is importing and I since learned the CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-R thing, I then did my text search for the word shift and found it in the original, above linked text. (I'd searched for cheat and code earlier to no avail.) I have the same trouble with consistency when I try writing guides myself. OMG!!! It's ready now. brb

    2016.04.10.16.43 - Concurrent with the above, I've just now installed VistaPro 4.0 on my game comp. It is woefully borked under XP. (I should prolly set up a 98se machine for it.) But, in the meantime I'm copying 405 mb from my Dos 3.0 version to the hard drive. (There's no install. It just runs when you tell it to and I have used this version a long time ago.)  I know a bit about tweaking Cmd.Exe in XP so we'll see how it goes. I'm not opposed to having a separate rig for specific programs, it's just it takes a while cause my stuff is in a zillion boxes. I don't currently have that intuitive I-know-where-everything-is feeling like I did before I got my own place.

    So, the plan is to use VistaPro to create my own landscape maps for sc4. Wish me luck ...

    2014.04.10.17.03 - Well, phooey. I give it plenty of EMS and no go. I change to plenty of XMS and no go. (It says it'll use either.) I know there are other tweaks I could try, but I'd have to find old notes somewhere. So, atm, General Protection is mad about something on Interrupt 0DH. Project set aside indefinitely. *:(

    2016.04.10.18.32 - Made it this far in VistaPro 4:

    08-02_Test01.png.85057da4c502ffa6e11178560054e83f.png

    Ofc, I don't want the numbers and words in there, but it is an 8 bit, grayscale image. *;)

    So now I'm reading How to Install a Map From the STEX.

    And the first result was a kind little messaging saying it's 257 x 257 and sc4 would prefer 1025 x 1205. So, I converted to that size and now, supposedly, it's loading in a new region. Been at it for a few minutes ... (stay tuned for further updates)

    2016.04.10.19.08 - Back with the Region View ( :roflmao: )

    The grid lines from the grayscale are like some kind of monuments! I'm pretending this is a real planet surface I discovered. It might become the new basis for my story.

    So, I selected this tile for the spaceship landing:

    596194602de8d_08-04_04SelectLanding.jpg.06a885498abaadc56530c6ac976ff231.jpg

    And the base camp will be set up here:

    Orbital readings indicate a perfectly breathable atmosphere. Ofc, we'll check more thoroughly once we land.  The lichen-like and small shrubs appear to be thriving rather well.

    Self note: Check out the Mars (and other?) mods for sc4. Base camp really should be inside domes while the scientists fully test the atmosphere.

    2016.04.11.05.00 - Trying another one:

    So, I started with this in VistaPro:

    5961946222ae2_08-06_VistaProMtns.jpg.f0cc4a52145f1ad1174defc44309a2fc.jpg

    Then I made this from that:

    08-07_MR258.png.d2fb5ba411468499669ae113d61ea751.png

    I was hoping for something like this:

    596194640a461_08-08_MtnRealView.jpg.be0adefd64cf62089667d5969f56f2fc.jpg

    Then tweaked to this:

    59619465442ed_08-09_VP4Vista2.jpg.663bebccbb851b02a8ec306ccd291e30.jpg

    But, here's what I got:

    59619465ef968_08-10_MtnRiversc4.jpg.abf62721c23136c8c738024233e495d8.jpg

    Which just isn't what I was expecting. *:(

    I went into that large, right hand tile with the water and lowered terrain. Had I clicked an eighth time, it would have ALL been underwater. Where'd the silly mountains go? Grr.

    Is there a setting for what the height differentiation sc4 uses during the import? Or do I need to tweak the grayscale image in some way?

    2016.04.11.06.31 - Fixed the image part.

    So, I found out that grayscale image up there isn't really grayscale. It looks grayscale, but it simply isn't grayscale. (Forgive my over indulgence of that gs word, but it turns out it's a really, really important step in the process.) The one above is Indexed Color.

    I converted the image to true grayscale then saved it as an 8 bit bmp:

    Awaiting sc4 render ...

    2016.04.11.06.46 - Now I have this:

    08-12_1025MRvRend.jpg.7c7b85c5d343f49dd03ee1e619c82bb3.jpg

    Which is better in the overall footprint, but those illusive mountains are still missing.

    08-13_ShoreZm.jpg.d6b104bcde4a8c1c0104d298913e0892.jpg

    Still, I want greater height divisions. Any ideas?

    2016.04.11.07.55 - Tweaked grayscale to this:

    If you produce a complementary grey scale image (the same as required for an in-game render) Landscape Designer will accept it.  It may trim it to one of the allowed sizes.

    Once you have the B & W image then the only thing to remember is shade 80 is sea-level by default.  The best thing about this program is that is shows a reverse false colour image of your map without going through a render.  Note it is a beta version.  I don't think Greyveil ever finished it completely, but it is satisfactory.

    Try taking one of your BW images into it.

    2016.04.13.06.21 - More on Grayscale.

    I do fully respect Granpa Moose, but I'm still not taking his advice a 2nd time. Not yet. And it's not that I feel it would be a bad choice, it's more that I am happily learning software I own. Like the VisapPro 4 and CC2's Fractal Terrains. I just cut off the shrinkwrap from VP4 a few days ago. The CC2FT I have installed once before but only did the first chapter of the 80 page book / tutorial. (It's a real hard printed book with real paper.)

    Anyhow, what I produce with them then goes to my antique Photoshop Elements 2.0 running under XPPsp3. So, what I wish to learn is: Exactly what height differentiations is the render thinger in SC4 capable of? I'd like to create some majestic mountains along with valleys and rivers. I did create one region by hand editing every single city tile. The greatest difficulty I had with the terraformer was the fight for reconciling height differences to other adjacent tiles. This became more painful when the large tile connects to lots of small and mediums.

    From what I've done with the grayscale map import into sc4 so far hasn't yet come close to satisfying me as much as my hand crafted one. Yet, I know it should be possible to do. I hope. So, next on my test list is to create some precise maps with regard to variations of grayscale stuff. I've just been to the Neutrals Hex Color Code page and found a list of color codes for 100 shades of gray. (I was under the impression there should be 256 variations. I'm either mistaken there or I haven't found the right code list.) Anyhow, I deliberately made the embedded link here so I can find the page again. Next cause stuff on the net can be ephemeral, I printed the web page to a .PDF file on my hard drive.

    2016.04.07.03 - Continuing from previous post since it was glitching with Save.

    I've decided to do my map tests with a much smaller region. (Previous test needed 1025 x 1025.) I'm going to use the same 6x6 region I created for my corrupted city file experiment. So, first I could do the math if I have the simple formula memorized. But, being uncertain I just tell the 6x6 to grab a grayscale which I know will be wrong and it suggests it would appreciate 385 x 385. Now, back over here at my net comp, I check and the 64 * config.bmp-pixels of 6 + 1 gives me the same answer.

    So, mental note: Each pixel of config.bmp equals 64 x 64 usable squares in a small region tile. Then within the city tile it is 4096 total squares. Now, iirc, that makes each tile 1/64 of a kilometer on each side. (<--Need to check this. The 1 km per red square is an approximation. Truth is 16 meter squares inside city tile. See Mister Giggles reply in that thread.) What can I grab from memory and convert that to the crazy feet and miles I'm familiar with? ... A meter measures three foot three. It's longer than a yard, you see. Or something with 0.625 in it?

    Ok. Time for Google. 0.6214 mile = 1 kilometer.

    So, this then jogs my memory that I'd learned a quickie conversion with 5/8 and later just memorized the decimal equivalent which is the 0.625 for halving the number of calculations.

    Back to what I was really writing about. 5280 * 0.6214 = 3280.992 feet city tile width so each square is 51.2655 feet on a side. What I know from my job as an assistant to a residential real estate appraiser is that 50 feet is typically a zone D5 or denser in a particular county here in Indiana. 40 feet is not uncommon, but lower densities require more road frontage.

    I create 3x3.bmp:

    09_01_3x3.png.018ef32b692df43abb81b9b560ccea59.png

    Then tell PS to expand to 385 x 385:

    09-02_385x385.png.c1cd5cbc51bffa837dc2e12eb1e91093.png

    Now to transfer to game comp and render ...

    09-03_3x3Rndr.jpg.686c11522190721db3c6b3a3a350cdce.jpg

    Which, I believe, shows the minimum and maximum heights via the import grayscale. (I do hope someone can show me where I might've gone wrong.)

    Self note: Grayscale image cannot be located in that region's folder.

Then, edit the city tile using Terraformer - disable editing protections on the city file and alter a tiny bit of it. Don't accidentally wipe the city tile by selecting the wrong option during the save prompt. Save the city. The region thumbnail will be regenerated and you'll be able to access it.

    I'm not really sure why no trees at all would appear using the god mode flora brush. By default, it should contains some Maxis trees. When the controller is overridden by another, then those trees should appear. If something was missing (dependencies), then I would expect you to see a lot of brown boxes.

    I guess the first problem to address is that you can't combine more than one such mod. In theory you can switch between them for different cities, but I'd really recommend you don't do this. That's because you risk your save files by doing it. In short, if you load a city where flora has been placed using one tree controller, with another tree controller loaded, you will simply get a CTD.

    So I would start by removing both mods entirely. Then install only one, following the installation instructions very carefully. Test it in a test city, i.e. a blank tile you don't care about loosing. There is no real secret or trick to tree controllers, other than installing all the dependencies, usually there are quite a lot though.

    Corina, yes, not only you can "daisy-chain" all neighbour deal types, but if you have utility-only cities you can have all services supplied by them, and if you don't actually "run" these cities (only have them for just supplying power and taking garbage - through deals) you get almost limitless supply, because of the "asynchronous" simulation of cities; the city tile accommodating  these utilities can be supplying services virtually forever, as power plants and incinerators won't be getting any older, landfills won't be getting full etc etc, which is kinda cheaty actually, but that's how the game is made. 2016.04.05.06.40

    So, in case anyone has noticed my attempt at split personalities in this blog, here's some further insight into the idea:

    There is a saying, You teach best what you most need to learn. Now, I may not have the wording exactly right, but it is in-story said by the book Donald Shimoda gives to Richard in the physical book Illusions written by Richard Bach. (I've found interesting things in his creations.)

    Anyhow, as a new member here I'm just sorta getting to know my way around. I felt that a log of my fumbling about might be useful when I forget things.

    My first concern is to learn my way around. There's bunches of places to go. Many don't interest me at all. If it isn't SC4 then I'll skip that stuff for now. I feel a mental road map might be in order. Rina is the explorer. She has brilliant ideas but doesn't always express them well. Cori is the me who interacts with each of the me's I create in my games as well as online. In game there is a Queen Corina. she is always off in some distant land. She has the perfect knowledge and wisdom. My real life me cannot write for her, but I can pretend I get messages.

    So, my plan is something like a map I drew for the two separate text based adventure games I played.

    While already logged in, I see this at https://community.simtropolis.com/

    596195f7cd010_10_01MainScrn.jpg.1342327946480fe8ccf8de5fc4065c4d.jpg

    My first interest is SimCity 4 Players Forum found under Categories of the Forums tab.

    596195f918e4a_10_02FirstStop.jpg.4cadae57e0a2c2eaa540a08cf2ae6d73.jpg

    Now I'm in the sub category list. (My home is in the SC4 City Journals at the bottom, but I stop into the public spot first.)

    596195f9e51a0_10_03RealFirstStop.jpg.5a2ec5c08dfee7add1217982c494abd4.jpg

    I go to SimCity 4 General Discussion (and scroll past the 9 pinned topics I've already read). I see I have the most recent reply:

    596195fb1bb25_10_04MyVisibleReply.jpg.dc380e0bc8f1046c2902ed543427c4f1.jpg

    Since there's nothing new here, I check notifications and jump to the newest unread post in my CJ. (Stands for Cori's Journal in my case.)

    Still to do:

    - create equivalent boxes diagram with arrows like one does for Zork 1 or Planetfall. But, gotta get ready for work now. - more to come ...

    General idea here is: What would've helped me personally the most. Take the me side that now knows more and explain to the me I was before I knew.

    After diagram start, do sc support path and others.

    (Just clicking the title linky takes you to the top of the posts in the thread.) Anyhow, say you've already read all the posts in a thread, but you're wanting to go back to re-read the last post. The dot's gone now. Hmm.

    So, click on the how-long-ago it was posted thing.

    And this'll take you to the last post too. Handy if you read it and it had so many details you are returning to re-read it.

    Self note: Prolly ought to edit these pics and draw big, pretty arrows to what I'm discussing.

    2016.04.06.20.00 - PM Basics

    no problem, and since I guess this is your first PM, you can now look around and see what the messenger is like, you'll notice your inbox, and you can save your messages by not doing anything, they will just stay there, you can delete as you choose of course, but you'll note up on the right is your used storage percentage, I have 29 messages(max 500) it reads if you scroll over it, and I am at 5% used storage so you have a lot of space to store messages, and you can add multiple people to a message so group projects are easier to work on.

    2016.04.08.17.39 - Things others have recommended. (Self note: Future interest. Not d/l'd now. Too easy to get on that spree and not do other things I thought I'd planned for myself. It's not like I can do anything with it until I'm all patched and ready for NAM. No, not that I'm saying this requires NAM, but the stable base which NAM would like would be the same base I want before getting even more new toys.)

    2016.04.08.17.55

    Ok. So here's a good spot to describe toy acquisition steps the Corite way:

    1. Open tab of SimTropolis where you are reading. See a linky for something you want? Wait! Don't click yet.

    (I have to shuffle things in and out of my physical brain memory system and it gets overwhelmed at times so I'm writing a guide to myself. When I say you and anything which reads as being you the reader please keep in mind this is really a private letter to Rina. The younger me. If I say Rina is silly or misinformed, it's really cause IRL I prolly had a eureka! moment and realized I did know how to do something but had shuffled it back past the back burners of my memory and was fumbling around re-learning. Like it took me a week to figure out the direct link to a specific post here.)

    2. Right-click the link rather than regular click (note: in my own mind I either reg click or other click. The whole right/left thing or its variants sometimes trip me up. Oh, and I do fully support the efforts of DAM, Mother's Against Dyslexia.)

    3. Open it in another tab. This allows being there and in the tab where other information directly related to what you just clicked for will be. (Talk about convoluted sentence. Will, obvly need work :lol:

    4. Ideally, have a home place. Mine's called Cori's Place. The sign on the outside says something like: Presenting Coriland aka Podunk. And yes, it'll be a story perhaps someday. Well it is already a story which took place in my imagination, but I digress.

    So, in this third tab you have your own editible forever posts and you can do some quick Ctrl-C and Ctrl-P'ing and save yourself a copy of the link and text to later reference or share. It'll also be great to have it handy when peeps ask those questions in the CJ (city journal) part.

    2016.04.18.08.58 - Elaborating on CoriStar type maps.

    Let's take a guess at the mostly likely reason a person would come here for the first time: Game won't run comes to mind. It could also be what cool stuff can I get? Either way the person's question will always likely start with: Where do I find ...? Whether it be techy info or anything else, I believe that's the first question. So, when representing Simtropolis Home as a city (or planet) it should have an Information Desk (building / city tile) in addition to everything else. This is where the new member can come and say: I haven't read anything else here, but I want to know ...

    This clickable building on the home page or the game specific page would take one to a particular forum ready to add a new thread. And, in that particular thread, there is never any gentle (or otherwise) prods suggesting the OP should have read such and such rather than post. Once the question is answered, a mod moves it to an archive sub folder.

    All of us older-join-date-wise members would reply with something like: Here's a linky to what will probably answer your specific question. Then, and only then, say: And here's a linky to a guide showing how to search Simtropolis if we are out to lunch or something. Next include a linky to the CoriGuide style introduction to other features. Like it'd be the off world brochure advertising Simtropolis to would be visitors. (Synopsis of the top x number of things one might like here or some such.)

    So, this Information Desk Forum would only have two pinned topics. Both are simplified CoriGuide style. One has linkys to all the guides available and the other is the rules for this site / forum. The only threads below the pinned ones are open question threads. For the Guide Index one, have all the clickable linkys be embedded so the text makes sense for what it is. Below it use the hidden content thinger to have a one or two paragraph description of what one finds by clicking above link.

    Ideally, we have enough members who would all agree to keep an eye on that forum and reply as best they can.

    Now, for the Guides themselves, I really like @rsc204 's idea of placing them ALL in the Omnibus section and renaming it something else. Like GUIDES. (Seems more intuitive to me for what the content might be.)

    2016.04.30.04.12 - Industrial Zone Layout

    On 7/4/2013 at 9:50 PM, Metalpuritan said:

    My industrial areas look really "neat" too using this method, even my dirty industry looks like it was planned even though with mine it is not planned at all.  I will zone a HUGE area, like a 30X100 area using the "shift" key to cancel street constructions and then water and power it, I almost always use high density too for bigger buildings.  Once it begins to grow, I will grab my biggest buildings and make them historical as they pop up, then i will draw a street around them, and then watch for more to grow and repeat this process until I have a nice windie road network going through my industrial zone, this also creates gaps I can fill with trees and some of TWrecks' filler lots and other such things, I love parking lots by the way.  I will later destroy some of the streets around the big buildings and expand it out a couple tiles and rezone to allow for some satellite buildings to grow, but only appropriate ones, you don't see an industrial burner attached to a paper factory, you know what I mean. I will repeat my bulldoze-grow-bulldoze-grow-historical thing with those satellite buildings too.

    ^ Snippet of entire post. Other good stuff in that thread.

    2016.04.07.06.45 - Note: If for some reason you like this, copy it while you can. It's only in here cause I like non-empty posts. This section will be for something SC4 related and once it occurs to me what it is, I'll likely ditch the following.

    Sample of something I wrote for someone for a different game. (Just so you can see what I've played with in the past.)

    So, I wrote this Dos Script to automate the making of the profile text thinger.

    Create a new plain text document, but name it CoriScpt.Bat, and include the following:

    @Echo Off
    ::
    :: FileName: CoriScpt.Bat
    ::
    :: Title: Game Script Control Profile File Creator Thinger (GSCPFCT)
    ::         aka GameScript by Cori (PerFeCTed)
    ::
    :: Author: Corina Marie
    ::
    :: Copyright (C) 2015 - CorinaMarie@Jsp
    ::------------------------------------------------------------------
    ::
    :: If Questions > 0
    ::   Do contact CorinaMarie@Jsp
    :: Else
    ::   Do give credit to me as you modify and pass this around
    :: EndIf
    ::
    :: NOTE: You will likely have to edit the D2Path, Entry, and KeyList data
    ::        in the Main Script Creation Loop in this file.
    ::          (Lines 223, 228, and 230 if things don't get moved around.)
    ::
    ::
    ::
    ::
    :: Requirements: Idk.
    ::
    ::  I wrote this in the MS-Dos Prompt window in XP Pro (fully updated/patched).
    ::
    ::   I know "Command Extensions" need to be enabled. I'm uncertain if they
    ::   are enabled by default or if sometime, notes in hand, I did something
    ::   which turned them on. Or does the setlocal ENABLEDELAYEDEXPANSION
    ::   do it all?
    ::
    ::   I started with a simple: C:>copy con CoriScpt.Bat<enter>
    ::     @Echo Off
    ::     ::
    ::     ::FileName: CoriScpt.Bat
    ::     ::
    ::     <F6><enter> (which created the file)
    ::
    ::   Then back at the C:>edit CoriScpt.Bat<enter>
    ::
    ::  And, so, this is what I wrote:
    ::

    If %ProMode%!==! Set ProMode=False

    2016.04.07.06.53 Just realized what my creative side was planning. This is to remind me to create a Dos Menuing System which swaps around plugins and whatever else with user definable backups. Ergo, it shall make new folders named in a dately fashion. Menu choices could be something like: 1. Play Farms, 2. Play MegaCity, 3. whatever else suits one's desire. (I don't yet know even what's really available. All I can say for certain is: There's buncheseses of it.)

    (And it needs organized imnsho.) imnsho

    [acronym=If I Remember Correctly]IIRC[/acronym]

    ^ Sent to me by HawkDawg

    And no, I'm not going to put the finishing beauty touches on it. I feel leaving it as is implies the steps I was taking to learn it. First, I wrote my sentence. Then in another tab I went and found HD's message, c & p to here like moving a sticky note IRL. Lastly, I typed it all starting with the [, adding text for the new thinger, and ending with the ].

    Were I inclined to clean it up, I'd then delete the plain imnsho and move the .) to the end. ;)

    2016.04.07.15 - Back to Cori Code idea.

    So, need to test if it can be recussive or would a tiny bit of memory usage cause problems. Transfer would then do it, but user would not return to the menu. (Have to re-double-click icon on desktop.)

    Companion .Bat file would let user type what the menu item's text should be. Then, ideally in some furture organization of all the add-on goodies, peeps would include the .Bat code that makes just that genre of stuff work with a to-be-standarized option to put it all back for them. I like batch files (or I guess they are scripts in higher win versions) (and, I can really, really relate to what Granpa Nonny said about Directories vs Folders.)

    So, where was I ... ?

    2016.04.07.06.15 - A Guide to the Guides (or, atm, a guide to the pinned stuff)

    Plan is: 1 - 2 paragraph description of each guide, list of broken links, and (ideally) repaired links too.

    2016.05.09.21.10 - Deleting the next 4 images. Was just screenshots of pinned topics for my reference. (I'd really like it if there was simply a directory tree (folder structure) of all the forums and whatevers and the pinned threads for each.) I need to learn the terminology for what's called what with regard to the categories of stuff and where it is. (Btw, I posted this pics elsewhere on ST. Prolly in the help the staff category.)

    Now need to linkyize them. (Text with embedded URL for each to make launch pad from this guide.)

    Oh, and need the Mac and CJ, but this oughta at least preserve the idea to refresh my memory when / if I come back here. Or, what's the term I've heard? If you're feeling froggy (one of dad's), take this idea and go with it. (I don't mind doing it all myself. Just it'll take longer.) ;)

    2016.04.15.19.01 - Really, really need to organize these first 15 posts. Tis getting crowded with clutter. I've been toying with the idea of getting more posts to shuffle things out of the way to. I would prefer they are not in this thread. I made a vow not to bump this myself unless a reply to someone was requested. Ergo, a question was asked of me. Anyhow, I'm wondering about the rules. I feel creating a Cori Archives CJ might be ok. I'll want to talk to a mod about maybe getting say 25 posts reserved. It'll be up top for a while, but I won't use beyond that for months. I've got enough stuff to write several of the essays I wish to create.

    2016.04.15.19.09 - Contest Idea.

    This is to be a written easy of your reply to the top five newbie questions about SC4 and your answers with your short explanation and a linky they should click for the details.

    As part of the contest, you decide what are the top 5 questions. I'll do mine by remembering back to when I re-opened the SC4 plain and cut off the shrink wrap from RH patch. That's been on the order of 5 or 7 months ago. Personally, I'd rather see the contest start after about 10 ormore posts of discussing which are the top 5 Qs.

    And, just like my Cori Challenge idea above, I do fully intend this to be an instigator of motivating someone to do something they would enjoy.  (Like on a special site dad set me up with other peeps who played in old Dos. Like 6.22 (or earlier, but usually not past 3.3) and we'd have contests such as Concise Code Contests in batch files (which evolved to scripts in windoze dos). But, I digress once again. Point is this contest is geared to the few who really do enjoy helping others by writing such a thing. I'm one, but I often get sidetracked with a zillion other projects too.

    I feel the top, number one-ist question would be: Which version should I buy? (The implied question they may not even know to ask is: What will be the best version considering I might want to mod or do anything any other person on ST does?)

    So, were I to craft a reply, I'd prolly start out with an mini outline:

    • If you have XP or below ...
    • If you have Vista to Win7 ...
    • If you have 10 ...
    • If you have Mac
    • If you have Linux
    • If you are trying to run this on a pocket calculator or cell phone ...
    • Etc (if I missed any)

    Pre-Contest Contest:

    Best answer to my sample question about which version.

    Switching trains of thought to Simtropolis Site as a SC4D Region. (My Cori Challenge draft above.)

    Self note: Need to find if there is a site map so I need not click all menus and write them down to then type them in. Mouse C & P is flaky for me sometimes. I haven't decide if it's a physical mouse aliment or site related, but if I do most of my work via keyboard it's all good. (And I don't mind keyboarding stuff. Just don't care to type more if not necessary.)

    More on the first contest of ST As Region (STAR if you want to make it an acronym.) I'd even shamelessly suggest:

    • Creatively
    • Orient
    • Relationships
    • In
    • Sim
    • Tropolis
    • As
    • Region

    for the title of the contest. :blush:

    Anyhow, I see the first contest to be basically the blueprint one develops after having had the land surveyed but where the "hand of man has not set foot" yet. (From some child's essay to which I do not have a linky.)

    Use any building in plain vanilla to represent stuff. Or grow stuff (res, com, ind). And use the transportation of plain vanilla to show the path traffic will take.

    See, it's the 2nd contest where I envision adding all fixes, NAM, and CAM. If the contests are to be reduced from 3 to 2, then I do suggest combining 2 & 3 rather than 1 & 2. And I really am not in favor of combining all 3 into a single contest. (Just my opinion.)

    If I haven't said it enough: Anyone is free to take any of my ideas I express in public here and run with it. So, you peeps who know more about all of this than me, go right ahead and use this as a springboard to something more refined.

    2016.04.15.22.07 - Suggestion for new definitions from whatever peeps here currently perceive them as.

    • Creation
    • Of
    • New
    • Text(s)
    • Exploring
    • Simplified
    • Teachings

    Idea being a Contest is distinguished from a Challenge. Then let Challenge be acronym'd as (hmmm, give me some time ...

    • C
    • H
    • A
    • L
    • L
    • E
    • N
    • G
    • E

    To mean something much more in depth.

    See, let's have a Contest be one which requires a How-Did-I-Do-It essay along with the image of whatever the contest was about. Like if it's a rural challenge, then the entrant not only supplies the image as is currently done, but must include a concise (or rambling like I do) explanation such that a similarly talented person could re-create the same effect for themselves.

    Sec. <brain.activity> Was it Granpa Moose who said get GIMP for images?

    Anyhow, perhaps make that the required default program for entries in ST Challenges?

    Then, later perhaps, have elite contests where the entrant also provides links to everything above plain vanilla they used. Assume one link will be sufficient to get SC4 NAM and CAM ready. All the essential links to be in guide which is in the works for going from plain vanilla to FIXED sc4. (This needs to have a definitive definition to mean a specific set of steps where completed successfully with regard to the absolute necessary patches.)

    Industrial demand is based on sim eq.  So the smarter the sims, the higher demand for I-ht, and lower the demand for I-d.  CO demand is a combination of eq and wealth, so to get CO$$$, you need a large number of high educated rich sims (note: highly educated R$$, and even R$ will also boast CO$$$ demand, but not nearly as much as R$$$ sims will).  Also, in any city with a population higher than 30,000 you I-Ag tanks due to game design.

    In case anyone is wondering, my intention now is to have all of my stuff grouped together here in the beginning. Since it'll be slow going, I'm reserving a few more posts.

    Random thing. My signature image from my other home:

    14-01_CorisJspSig.jpg.2369e44c44f95794ff04528429a5f107.jpg

    This is "me" chatting with most character's worst nightmare in the game. Except Cookie-Cutter Smiters. (and even they cannot take them all on at once as I do) See, it's not about winning the game. It's about doing it with unrivaled flair. If I do say so myself.

    14-02_UT-3AtOnce.jpg.b1c3afb3af6c9450fc4c85bba42c37c6.jpg

    She can stand among them and chat for about 20 minutes before she either has to leave for repairs or kill them. Either is very much within her powers. What I learned from my gear/skills/stats allotment was I could be invincible forever in there with the proper self-repairing outfit. So, I did that too. Then she can't hurt them either tho. (Timed tests were once one hour and another 3½ hours. Average Smiter time among them like that: 1 minute, tops.)

    (Remind me to get a pic or meet in game to see.)

    Here she discovered something which was only known by a very, very few diehard players and most of them ancient.

    Anyhow, she's moving into SimCity 4 and hopefully will be able to find all prehistoric mods. A good log cabin mod would be great if one exists. She'll also need a secure vault for her most prized possession:

    Here's the story behind this: One of my bnet friends was obsessed with personalizing his "godly" gear like CoH or Infinity and then showing them to me. So, I did the sash and showed him. He was like, OMFG!!! WTF?!? You wasted the quest! and I about fell out of my chair laughing at him. (Personalizing an ingame item is a quest reward, btw.)

    To do: Find out if any of the sc4 mapping tools can produce a grayscale from an existing region so I can tweak the image myself. Basically I like the Podunk map as I created it using only the sc4 in game editor. Now, I'd like to clean up the quadrapoint glitches and make better overall transitions along the city tile edges.

    2016.04.24.17.56 - Psychology

    " ... This is where the scripting system can fall down, since without a lot of complex code, file/folder locations must usually be set in stone. Not to mention expecting the average user to manually define the path for such backups is probably doomed to failure. "

    ^ - I am quoting someone but not revealing who because I intend to nitpick the vibes of this message.

    Does the author describe the situation in a positive or negative manner? One school of thought is that such presentation is intended to portray the mission as extremely difficult or even impossible and, as such, will grant acclaim to any such programmer who can complete the task.

    On the other hand, some peeps reply with useful advice on how any given aspect of the mission could be accomplished. The emotional interpretations of various style replies can be difficult. Even more so due to the limiting medium of text. (And the occasional emoticon.)

    2016.04.26.06.46 - Another Example:

    " Not to mention, playing with the taxes can have serious unintended consequences if you don't understand the fundamentals of the simulation."

    This one is interspersed with actual, helpful advice. The part I dislike is: if you don't understand the fundamentals of the simulation. To me this says: What you are doing with taxes is really dumb since you obviously don't know something which I do know. And it doesn't provide even a hint of what knowledge is relevant.

    So, what would be better? How about changing that last part to: ... consequences such as it takes 3 game months before a lowered tax rate has the intended effect. And then add one or two more examples if there are any. As a bonus, add a linky to a topic which would provide a decent overview of what goes on behind the scenes tax-wise.

    15 Reserved - Ok, I hope this'll be sufficient space for my intentions.

    2016.04.08.06.23 - Sim Tropolis site locations represented in a SimCity 4 Region.

    Center tile: Visitor's Center - Should show great respect for the land. Lots of beautiful open areas. Airport and other transportation blend well with the landscape. Hotels, local residential and the educational buildings are convenient to each other.

    Commercial buildings here could represent links to the basic fix-the-game stuff rsc is creating and others would be links to genres of game style add-ons like farms, mega city, etc.

    Adjacent tile: STEX

    Adjacent tile: Techy Stuff subdivide into perplexing stuff (help!) and guru stuff (coolness!). or some such ?

    Adjacent tile: Dilapidated Dead Links. Like organize which threads no longer reference the download they used to in like 5 BC (Before Cori joined this site) . Here I envision a walking path at most leading to the distant (within the city tile) pyramid and grave yards. (Represents the dead links.)

    xx

    As I was implying below, it'd be sweet if the Sim Tropolis navigation could mirror what's created in the hyperlinked building images here on the site. I've just barely started learning the tools available in this editor so I'm uncertain if I can bring my vision into reality in a CJ or not.

    As an additional idea: Have a toggle option to switch to a directory tree style hierarchy with clickable links. The key concept is that the whole thing can be seen rather than having to climb up and down the current menu system. (@Elder join-date-wise members, please don't take this as complaining, it's just I feel navigation options could be more intuitive to ease the pain of newbies like me.)

    Mooshing this stuff down the page. Newer idea above.

    2016.04.06.07.44 - Start of Simtropolis Site locations as Sim Tropolis city map.

    Ideally, funding for each aspect (building) will represent overall satisfaction for how current and relevant its contents are. I'm guessing each of those signs could be an imbedded linky, but I'd have to do research before even attempting such a feat. (Well, getting close to get-ready-for-work time. C'ya.

If something I've said here inspires you, credit for same would be nice. *;)

    The ugly, yellow pause thingy has a specific meaning to me so I use it when it suits me. *:P

    I can simply start and stop time should I desired to remove it. (I'm godlike in my own world.) I've been informed of an add-on thingie which can remove it. I'm uncertain whether that's in game (prolly) or once I'm at my artist's station and, possibly, tweaking an image before posting. If the former (as I suspect) then it's not likely to happen in Coriland. (Deal with it quietly, please.) If the latter, I might consider it. However, I might change my mind at any time later. [slightly veiled, quiet sinister chuckle] *;)

    2015.04.18.28 - The one which bugs me (and I never mention in someone's journal) is the UD mission bubble. I simply have a routine to disable it when I get to my city tile. Even if an explosion occurred the moment time starts, I'd still go thru my routine of toggling off the recalcitrant thing. I tell it to go away and it does, but slip out of the city for a moment and there it is again when I return. Prolly oughta check if'n there's a patch for that.

    2016.04.06.18.45 - Next Building(s)

    So, then north of the graveyard and pyramid, adjacent, but some distance from Hdqtrs, there should be the New University of Revived Links. Additional buildings are the documentation, bug lists, priorities, etc related to the now desirable linky.

    Unless I miss my guess, it seems some admin could run the equivalent of: Dir /s of all the downloadable content and post that. Any member who felt so inclined could document it and post a new, viable linky. Someone in charge would verify that and then remove it from the massive master list of Needs Referenced. Eventually, it could all get catalogued.

    Then as the major splash screen for new members would be the: If the linky you tried from some old thread didn't work, GO HERE. (as masked URL to the new Repository Index.)

    2016.04.07.07.31 - Need to find out if modders can add like a few sentences to a building. So, ? click would tell what the building represents. The currently used Headquarters could describe the other main buildings. Those would in turn describe the lesser buildings.

    I feel the Sim Tropolis navigation and information could be simulated in a city. If so, create the whole shebang and make it downloadable. Each person could have a playable city guide to where everything is located on the site. The site version would look as close to the playable one as possible. Clicking buildings here would open up more details than the game version. (Seems convoluted in how I'm saying this, but I gots to go soon. Grrr.)

    Always nice to see a new journal in the works. I can see your new to the site, I take it your also new to the game since your only using vanilla maxis right now. Seems like you have some interesting ideas in the works right off the bat, looking forward to seeing more.

    I have the same problem! Not to mention I'm a horrible speller.
    One mod I would recommend off the bat is to get rid of that yellow outline you get when you take in game screen shots;

    I believe you don't need any mod's to access god mode in city mode. All that's needed is to hold down Alt+Ctrl+Shift and then click on the god mode icon, should open up those tools for use. Anyhow good luck!

    Starflight, Robot Odyssey, and King's Quest!  Definitely reputation points for you.

    Ah, the hours I spent on Starflight...nothing like having months of exploring and mineral collecting go down the flames after encountering my first alien fleet of Uhlek warships.

    We won't mention the tangled spaghetti wires that were the insides of my robots in Robot Odyssey.  I admit my three robots are to this day still stuck in Robotropolis on the flashing pattern lock puzzle, but at least I can claim with nerdy childhood pride that my reprogrammed robots communicating with each via their radios made it through that nasty invisible minefield.

    No interim saves on hand? :O

    Oh, I know, right! Mine started as the same kind of mess. I really loved the beginning parts where I could just ride around inside and re-wire them as needed. And fun times just grabbing an IC and pulling it outside to snap all the connections. (Great when done deliberately. Sucked when done accidentally.) I never did solve the whole thing, but I did free the 4th robot.

    Concurrent with playing the game dad and I would do various breadboard projects from various magazines he'd get for me off of ebay. Seems like a lot of them used the 555 timer chip and/or its bigger siblings: the 556 & 558. I remember one project was an electronic pendulum with LEDs. Then, much later, I played with some sound synthesizer chip. Was SN something or other but I don't recall the next 6 or 8 digits. I did the individual sound circuits from the diagrams (or schematics as they are called) then made notes of each resistance or capacitance for any given pin. Then I used the appropriate potentiometer or multi-pole rotary switch so I could create any of the sound effects without re-wiring the circuits.

    Hyperspeed is another I dearly loved. Like after a battle in between star systems and when things got damaged you could grab parts from other circuits and re-build the damaged ones. Like I might have to completely disable weaponry to repair the engine circuits. I solved the first 3 of 4 sectors (or whatever they were called). I took a break from it for a while since the last one was so huge and I never did get back to playing it.

    Anyhow, thanks so much for your reply here. You might notice it's still quite a mess since I've used some of my reserved space as a scratchpad for posts I later made in other threads. I need to clean up the clutter and organize stuff better. I have so many projects in the works for sc4 that it'll just have to evolve over time.

    I suppose having all of your stuff in one place is nice, but keep in mind for the most part posts at ST and SC4D are permanent; an attempt is made to keep all posts accessible. Various site upgrades and hacks have led to some data loss. some of the earliest Show Us Your... threads are gone, as is the thread talking about Ryan (?) and Samantha's marriage the thread they met in (they were a couple that met on Simtropolis; they are now married and have at least one kid, iirc), though Duke has a bunch of screenshots of the thing (if you ask nicely).

    Perhaps a single post, with all the relevant posts linked to it, with dates and thread names in case site upgrades break the links? That might be more intelligible, only because what's here is so varied and non-sequitur.

    Honestly, the only computer games I had as a kid were the Jumpstart ones and Lego LOCO (A really simple model train simulator with Legos!). The games were designed for our age or above (at the time, I think 7-9 yr olds), but we had them down before I turned 6, and we would sit there and try to fail as hard as we could--or just put off winning--to see how the games would try to make us win, especially the ones with a plotline. I've never heard of most of the video games people mention on this site (that aren't SC4). Thank goodness for Google, because otherwise I would be completely lost. I have, actually, played Mario on a SNES (or was it a NES), as well as played cartridge-based Vectrex games, but neither of those were mine, so the actual time with the medium was relatively short.

    SNES is the best.  I'm playing through ChronoTrigger and FFVI (or FFIII depending on what suits you) again now.

    I have no idea what was going on in that coding post, but this is a fascinating start to your city journal.  I'm looking forward to seeing what your creations will look like.

    Wow ... you are taking this sooo seriously. I am scrolling through this page for ... an hour?  :ducky:

    Anyway, in your thread with links to different content, I found you were searching for a castle - from your thread I can imagine you are not searching for a Schönbrunn-styled buildings, so:

    Oravský hrad

    Nový zámok

    Also, check out xannepan's creations, he has quite a lot old buildings ...

    Hope that helps, I feel kind of bad knowing your other thread died. I try to help sometimes, although I am quite disoriented about many things so don't expect too much!

    Good luck building your milieu :thumb:

    Thank you for your efforts and time.

    Thanks for saying that.

    I did, however, just let this thread die cause it turned in to a complete jumbled mess which I used kind of like a notepad and diary while I was all new and overwhelmed and lost here on this site. I've considered deleting most everything in it and starting over. Or, just leaving it as a fossil of early Coriness.
