Let's play a little game. k? :blush:

It so happens you will be going somewhere and cannot take anything with you. When you arrive you will have all necessities and a good comp with the basic SC4 and RH discs. You will have 24 hours of internet access from there to gather up the patches and mods you want. Now, before you go, what linkys would you include in a message on this board so you could get the rest of what makes the game good for you? Note: You might choose to use the CDs as drink coasters and download the game from your chosen site. (Hopefully saying which one and why that version.) In my pretend world I get the comp I'm using when I arrive in the distant wherever it is I went. And for this thread game, it does not have anything except the OS tweaked as I do. (Hence the need for linkys here.)

My list will be woefully incomplete and untested (think of it as a wish list) as I've not installed any of them yet. And yes, I could do the pretty link embeds (masking) if I wanted to. I'm choosing not to atm. That's a prettyifying step. Content getability is what I'm seeking atm. (I do love how the experts do it so quickly.)

Note about wishes: If you happen to have something which might fulfill another person's wish (cause you've seen, or better yet, used a mod which does said wish) then post in your blog in this thread something like: A Gift for such-n-such-person using their exact screen name. Use the @ prefix and then start typing.

Now, the game part of this is you have left the gift out in a public place. Many others might grab it too. But it's magical and there's always another for the next visitor. In time the wisher will make the rounds of each other's lists and gather up stuff which appeals to them.

Interesting topic, In addition to the NAM, all the fixes listed above, PIM-X, and Ilive's Reader, (It would be redundant to post their links again) I would add a couple of things that may suit a newbie player or modder well. I first delved into lotting and modding by fixing disfuctional or badly modded buildings and these two resources combined were -and still are- a great help.

TWrecks' Stats and Values Pack comes handy if you download buildings that were made before PIM-X came along, it requires a wee little bit of knowledge about how custom buildings work, but it's well worth knowing if you either want to understand how to mod or if you want to play a balanced game.

And of course, to actually fix the things, I would recommend along with PIM-X and the Reader, SC4Tool. I find it better if all you want to do is to quickly fix or check some stats, It's easier to use that the Reader (though not as powerful) and it lets you edit some stats that PIM-X won't. It also serves for Transit enabling, creating Textures, and it has a Maxis buildings reference to make sure you fix things in tune with game mechanics.

So these are two of my bare essentials, they are fixes and fixing tools not only for the game but for the custom content that is the key to the game's success and durability. :)

I've actually synced my Plugins folder with my spare OneDrive account, so if I'm feeling cheaty and all, I could just give a link to that (except it's a non-public folder, obviously). Advantage being that Gobias' terrain/texture mods are in that folder, and they're currently nowhere online (as of April 2016)

Eep, though, the plugin searches for all the mods! This may take some time. InvisiChem listed most of the ones I care about, though a mention of BAT4MAX and a link to the Student download page of 3dsMax is also worth listing (when I get around to the links). It's certainly much easier to just name the mods I want/prefer, though I feel like that's been done before on the site?

Might be worth mentioning that I also use the BTM slope mod in addition to a modified version of Ennedi's mod to give me more control over my slopes (Ennedi's mod typically won't redraw BTM slopes, so it's a good way to get a straight slope if I'm trying to avoid Ennedi's notorious digging behavior present with his mod).

Can't forget Vester and Rivit's train mods either. I seriously cannot bring myself to ever go back to vanilla trains ever again after seeing theirs. Quite frankly if you're still on Vanilla, I don't know how you can live with it (other than not build railway networks).

 

If you're seriously looking for horses and carriages to replace cars, you may be disappointed, but if you PM SimCoug and/or Vortext, they have custom T21 mods that place these items on their streets that they will probably be more than willing to share with you. Then just drop your automata setting to 'low' (I enabled 'off' in the Graphics Rules, but it was almost there already with the default setting), and you'll get the same effect. It's also worth noting that SimCoug and Vortext's cities are 100% grown (with the obvious exceptions), though not without serious effort on their part (and liberal application of the SC4 SUM/StartUp Manager).
