    San Antonio, Texas, again!

    Tower+of+Americas+view.jpg
(By Rebecca Darling at R We There Yet Mom?)

View from the observation deck of the landmark Tower of the Americas.  You would think we all loved light earth-toned terra-cotta and rejected modern glass boxes, but, in truth, we were just too poor and provincial to attract them.  The edges of the Texas Hill Country are in the far horizon.  Interestingly, the two most vividly colored objects in this view are the flaming red La Antorcha de la Amistad ("The Torch of Friendship") sculpture by famous Mexican sculptor Sebastián, and the "enchilada red" Central Library by famous Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta.

Brasilia, the utopic promised city of the Americas.

Prophetized by Don Bosco, anounced by Juscelino Kubitschek, planified by Lucio Costa and Óscar Niemeyer, built by the Candangos, populated by more than 2.4 million people (the biggest city in the world that doesn't existed at the beggining of the XXth century). Its architecture and its dream of a modern, developed Latin America stills amazes the continent and the world.

Well, definitely not a major city here, but very interesting:

    9f49b4816659.jpg

    Neft Daşları, Azerbaijan

The city on the sea. This is a town of about 900 people located 100 miles off the coast of Baku, Azerbaijan. It is located at the center of a huge industrial complex in the oil fields of the Caspian Sea.

Initially, it was a set of oil platforms. The Soviet government then decided to interconnect those platforms and to later built a city to accommodate the workers and it turned this into a huge maze of roads. Now, Neft Daşları has almost everything you could expect in a city of that size: five-to-nine-stories high-rise commie apartment buildings, a power plant, a hospital, a school, a cinema, an open-air green park, a community centre, a bakery and even a lemonade factory!

    busan-skyline.jpg

    Busan, Republic of Korea

Busan Metropolitan City is South Korea's second largest metropolis after Seoul, with a population of approximately 3.6 million. The population of the metropolitan area, including the adjacent cities of Gimhae and Yangsan, is approximately 4.6 million. It is the largest port city in South Korea and the world's fifth busiest seaport by cargo tonnage. The city is located on the southeastern-most tip of the Korean peninsula. The most densely built up areas of the city are situated in a number of narrow valleys between the Nakdong River and Suyeong River, with mountains separating some of the districts. Administratively, it is designated as a Metropolitan City. The Busan metropolitan area is divided into 15 major administrative districts and a single county. (Wikipedia)

@Bastet69008:  That reminds me Hashima Island near Nagasaki.  A coal mining community of over 5,000 people, the island-mine was heavily built up with protective seawalls and apartment blocks until it had the silhouette of a battleship, giving rise to the nickname "Gunkanjima," or "Battleship Island."

     Nagasaki_Hashima_01.png

Legend has it that the island was even mistakenly torpedoed a number of times by American submarines.  History tells us prisoners and forced laborers were once sent there.  The mine survived into the postwar era, but the community ultimately left when the coal mine finally closed in the 1970s, leaving an abandoned, eerily post-apocalyptic "ghost island" now popular with tourists.  Imagine if this at the "stern" was your high school, and yet, families lived there!

"If you try to please everybody, you often times end up pleasing nobody, especially yourself. When somebody offers to do a favor for free, like making a mod for SimCity 4, you shouldn't be overly critical of something generously given to you. In other words, you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth." - Twilight Sparkle after playing SimCity

"Being a mayor or a content creator for SimCity 4 is a heavy responsibility, Patrick. Each city and each custom content is like a child, and must be treated as such." - SpongeBob Squarepants after playing SimCity

"Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible." - Frank Zappa

"The wisest men follow their own direction." - Euripides
