Since February, I have been cracking away at a new region about an industrial/financial island nation. This is the same one that features the airport I have been posting in this thread. But this is the capital city, Archer Port. It is the most developed city in the region and is home to 160k people, a number which is gradually climbing.

This particular city draws from several RL inspirations, mostly from US cities like San Francisco and New York.

SkCYLL5.jpg

So far, this is the most complicated junction I have built. I have sunk at least a day to get traffic to flow the way I wanted. I might have to readdress those roundabouts at the sides.

nMoiXhc.jpg

Sports district, the Maxis stadiums are stand-ins until I can find some decent replacements. There will be an indoor arena as well that will be the site for the indoor sports (Basketball, Hockey, Boxing, Volleyball, etc). There will be more hotels built in the area here, too.

And this is one of the standard interchanges along the highway. The civil engineers in this region find it easier to just dig under than having to build overhead ramps all the time. Those walls that curve around the light posts would have been finished if I didn't bulldoze the MML for this sound wall set!

^ The airtrain looks better now. The train in the second photo should have 5 doors per side.

Thank you mrsmartman. :D

If i'm not wrong, I think you are talking about the Engine K car version, this is the Engine E car  version with the H, F, and G cars, the E car only has 2 doors per side, the K car version has 5 doors. The original automata has only 1 engine unfortunely. I can make the K car version with a second dat file. :)

Greetings.

Edit.

Is this one? :O

So I had two fairly big cities located right next to each other in my most successful region. Currently working on tying them together into a metrolopis of 4-5 million people. Greatest step so far is this. Boswell, around 30,000 inhabitants so far, but only about 1/3 of it is finished. :)

The MTR Airport Express is very nice. This is the baggage car. 1 car per train set of 8.

That looks awesome far __B! I especially like the smooth T-shaped interchange you got where the two highways meet. Looks very promising indeed!

Recently finished the "5-way" intersection to merge the urban highways (lacking too many diagonal pieces so a lot of straight parts :(.
Now I'm working on this intersection in my industry district, it have 3 levels most likely. On the left side I want to save space, at right side the suburbs will be starting.

¿Chicago, are you?

It looks amazing, and very north american, of course, with that sudden CBD and rectilineal avenues.

Just a question: can ferries go up the rivers/canals, or the height of the bridges impedes that?

The height of the bridges impede ferry travel. The downtown is three shallow clicks above sea level, and then they're dug out at 15m deep three tiles wide and trimmed off with the marina sea walls. I used to live in Chicago, but live on the West Coast now. I think it looks more like Milwaukee downtown, but Chicago from afar because of the way the forest preserve lines go. After playing this game for years, the layout seemed to me the best way to get as many ploppables on the large tile as possible while still making the game functional. It wasn't until I was about haflway done that I realized how much it resembled Milwaukee.

Here is a closeup of the canal:

In the top left of this picture you can see how high it is.

Just one or two hints that i've learned and that may help you:

If you have extracheats.dll, you can use the cheat "tastyzots" if im correct to eliminate the icons with the u-drive it to take a pic.

Also, click on the landmarks menu, then click on the minimize, put the cursor in a corner, and take a pic.

After, you can printscreen it, dowloand ifranview, paste the print screen and save it as jpg. Then dowloand photoscape, cut the margins of the photo, and you can add effects also.

Anyway you should do a city journal. ;)

My 200th post on simtropolis!Big milestone for me!

Here's my island city i've been working on.I made the skyline to not be repetative

cxTSdFP.jpg

Some feedback (don't take me wrong) and some compliments:

- I love the overal choice of buildings, and i also love the way you laid out the avenues with curves, pretty nice imo.

- I don't like the riverbanks, but thats not your fault, that river side bat is pretty nive when zooming in, but when you zoom it out, it stays like that :S

- I also don't like the Shanghai Finance where it is, and i don't like the Marina diagonal building xD. But thats just my taste it still looks awesome imo.

Eh yeah i agree with you about the seawall it's a bit clunky when zoomed out.

Tastes are tastes it's your opinion there's nothing bad about it.

Thanks for the feedback!

I've been working on making my harbor more realistic. I have a lot of industry in a big city. To cope with all the cargo getting out of the city I have a lot of rail and four harbors. I just plopped the harbors on the coast without paying much attention to them. As a result one harbor (the third one) is at maximum capacity while the first and last one use half capacity. There is another harbor at the right which isn't used at all, the second harbor is new.

This new realistic large harbor I'm trying to create is giving me quite some headaches. First of all the coastline is very steep, the coast itself might be a bit more realistic than before (ergo, the right side of the picture) but I still have to find a way to include this harbor in the surrounding area, this could be quite difficult considering the fact that I use a slope-mod (which I didn't at the beginning). It might even be a bigger challenge to split cargo streams equally between the five harbors.

Well, first of all, if you need inspiration, you should consult this topic: https://community.simtropolis.com/forums/topic/9971-show-us-your-seaport/?page=22

And you can also search in skyscrapercity and google maps (two important tools) how are ports laid out and how do they blend with the surroundings.

You can download some port pack to make it more realistic imo.

Finally, you should download a slope mod. :)

SOrry if i sound harsh or something, is not my intention, i just dont dominate english language. PS i like your railroad and the top of the lines.

Thanks for the advice! I will look into it. I already have a slope mod by the way. Just didn't have it when I built the port the first time. Now I've made the hill a little bit less steep than in this picture, I've also zoned some industry next to it. It's much better than it was before but there are still some challenges I have to face if I want to make it perfect. Even though the hill is less steep than it was before it is still too steep. I especially notice that when connecting roads to the road below, it keeps messing with the coastline, this is the reason why I use FLUPS at certain places or why roads don't connect to each other. I'm thinking about fixing this problem by making terraces seperated by nice industrial embankments.

Below the situation how it is at the moment. I'm quite happy about the harbor itself but the connecting area still needs a lot of work. Eventually I want to get rid of the FLUP and find a way how to connect the rail to the seaports. This was one of the problems I encountered. Maybe the only way to connect the harbor properly is to rebuild the whole area, this would however cost a lot of effort and I would have to demolish a lot of buildings, at the moment the demand in this city isn't really great. There is a lot of abondonment in the commercial buildings and a declining population, hence the new industrial zone as temporary solution.

Well, it looks much better imo.

You have two simple solutions regarding the rail: either you expand the Port inland, or you make the rail go next to the coastline. If you have trouble with the slope, just use god mod and smoth the terrain to some extent.

After, you can either  use residential walls to mascarate the slops, or (my favourite), built parks with mayor menu flora. It looks more natural and blends in nicer. Download some flora in that case.

Anyhow, it looks way nicer, congratz ;)
