I'm just filling in my plugin folder and getting to grips with the NAM and NWM amongst other things after a very long time away. I've been dabbling a bit the last few months but hadn't really played for at least 5 years before that.

My current little town, I'm struggling a bit with TULEP's but slowly getting there. Quite like how the harbour came out though.

Not sure I've found a region map I'm happy with for a bigger scale project though.

Nice! Loads of lotting done by yourself eh? (:

Well, if this is aimed towards me, I didn't do any of the lotting. The building itself overhangs and I was debating on what to do with the space. I then looked closer at the building and it looked like it was setup perfectly to be on a water feature (the edges reminded me of concrete bulkheads) so I just plopped a pond around it! I thought it make a pretty sweet little waterfront area that museum patrons could congregate by. Anyways, heres some more progress in the area!

Oh cool, I thought maybe those walls were your creation and you seamed the lot with them, but the pond is a very good idea regardless, reminds me of some real places heavily.

That looks really cool, should look awesome when you've finished it :)

I haven't been doing very much with SC4 recently (a lot of RL stuff seems to have hit all at once!), but one of the few things I did was terraform and fit a kind of promenade along the lakefront in Northshore:

However, its still very much a work in progress, not least because I need to find some diagonal buildings to replace the low-density (orthagonal) residential. So, does anyone have any recommendations for me? :)

SimCoug's diagonal homes, available on the STEX a quick search away. They have a few caveats, like being designed for use in a 19th century CJ, but they're excellent nonetheless, and are well worth a download.

I would add along with what APSMS recommended (which are here and work really great with the rest of CP's set) you might want to try house, as well as lotted by van1357, though you may need to get the dependency files from the LEX at Sc4Devotion.

That's all I can really think of at the moment...  :whatevs:

This city is located in the default Maxisland adjacent to the Big City Tutorial. I chose this particular tile because I started with a good amount of demand. After several hours of manually terraforming the land into a terrace and over 100 in-game years, This is what I've come up with:

L5vileP.jpg

Overview of the entire city. Nearly every square is covered and i'm trying to figure out how to fix the terrain around the edges and connect them to neighboring tiles.

4gtIMMi.jpg

Closeup of the waterfront retaining walls. I really need to go back and fix that intersection toward the top and to the left of that 6-lane avenue..

u3iu97X.jpg

Closeup of the industries. Mostly high-tech industries operating out of here.

DI9Rqsd.jpg

Oldest part of town with the very first depot/maintenance yard. The sign was erected for passing ship captains to identify how far up the river they were going. Nowadays this city is recognizable for its twin towers standing on the opposite side.

Started a new region to take advantage of the new NAM and general acquired knowledge. It's based on the greyscale that came with Blade2k5's Lakomiak Islands, but I found the "scale image" function in GIMP - it now measures 18x18 Large city tiles, though I have some small and medium tiles in there to facilitate bridge building. 448 tiles of city-building goodness!!! It crashes Terraformer and RegionCensus  :D  Current population 166k, this should keep me occupied for a couple years. A CJ awaits....if I ever finish...0yzy.jpg

Hmm. You could always release your CJ in-progress. That way everyone stays interested!

I was thinking that I had terraformer run larger regions, but checking my files I see I was mistaken. However, I have opened similarly sized (15x15 large tile) regions in terraformer before, though my laptop gets a bit hot. Have you tried using the 4GB patch on terraformer? (mine seems to work fine with it).

Also, can you even scroll to the edges on that map? I know typically a problem with larger regions is that the extremities become unaccessible.

Good luck working on it!

I don't post here at all really, but I've been downloading the great content for years now.  The guys who make all this custom content are legends, and they extend the lifespan of this game exponentially!  I got bored of my old Downtown (even though I've spend days on it!) and so decided to rebuild it with all the new content I have accumulated.  I'm really enjoying Reddonquixote's Melbourne BATs so I started playing about with a Melbourne type configuration for my downtown.  This is my main stadium, roughly based on the Ethiad stadium in Mebbourne, but I have brought it one city block south to fit in with my transport networks and shoreline.  The rest of the map is a WIP so I'll tidy those bits up.  I've been paying much more attention to detail  than I used to and I find it more rewarding, obviously time consuming, my life has gone out of the window.

@APSMS - I do manage to scroll to the edges; though the bottom right corner gets 'bumpy' and shakes the screen when I try, I can still get into the two medium-sized tiles on that corner. Thanks for the advice on the 4GB patch though, I'll try that, because I love me some Terraformer.

And here are a couple more WIPs, from the previously posted region. Any advice or critiques would be greatly appreciated!

While I'll plop just like the next guy, I prefer natural growth, and that means planning a city that doesn't look awful can be...interesting. Here's what will eventually be the central terminal in a Boston-styled city:

And in the same city, rail and highways buried underground, and in this case going under the river:

Some decent starts there, I like that you're thinking ahead and thinking about using underground heavy rail in your cities, rather than possibly running into problems later on with it being overground.

However, I think one thing that would improve the realism of your railways is to remember that they generally follow a very flat path (even a 1-in-100 gradient, i.e. 1m of elevation for 100m horizontally, is very steep for most railways). So when making railways, it's often best to use single clicks of the road tool to level the ground, then drag the railway over that so it's level. In the first image, to achieve flat railways you should probably have the station 'submerged' into the ground at the same level as the tunnels (using the road plop method) so the trains don't have to tackle a super-steep incline to into/out of the station :)
