About This File
Viipuri Railwaystation is partial recreation of old Viipuri (Vyborg) railwaystation which was destroyed during the WW2 by retreating Soviet forces in 1941. Viipuri was Finland's second largest city before the war and Viipuri station was one of the largest railwaystations in the country. It was designed by Eliel Saarinen, man who also designed Helsinki Central Railwaystation.
The tracks were running "on the second floor" and it has a separate lounge for the passangers, but I didn't include it in my version and that's why I'm not sure what the facade facing the platform looked like.
During the Winter War station and railyard was hit by bombs and after the war the station with the rest of the city were cededed to Soviet Union. When fightning continued in 1941 retreating soviets decided to blow up the station buildings with the railyard so that Finnish-German forces couldn't use it. During the liberation era Finnish didn't have time to repair the building and after WW2 soviets replaced the station with a new one.
