Just a reminder, AI is a tool, and should be treated as such. There is nothing wrong with AI-generated content. My beef is when someone creates content that's clearly generated with ChatGPT or otherwise, and they pass it off as their own.

Okay, so we'll just let it happen, that's fine👍 @Haljackey specifically called out @Ulisse Wolf's image because while it's not malicious at all, and there isn't anything wrong with it, it is still AI-generated and it was highly prominent on the front page. I know you're thinking "it's just an image, no big deal", it seems harmless, but there are some real thorns below the surface. What are you letting into the community we cultivate by not doing anything?

I like your optimism You completely missed my point though. It's too easy for someone of whatshisface's ilk to come in and create custom content that was generated with ChatGPT and pass it off as their original content. So basically you're saying you're OK with that?

Yeah, nah, I think it's something that needs to be addressed in this thread honestly. I am aware that AI generated images are a huge rabbit hole that the moderation team is absolutely not willing to deal with, but you are aware you opened a huge loophole here as an admin of this site, right? Specifically, that as long as said AI images are not violent or pornographic, but that there's no attempt to state specifically what's acceptable as AI content. What's there to stop someone uploading an AI generated image of a SC4 region for example? All that's needed is a statement that a specific image was AI-generated, or if multiple AI generated images are used in a forum post or similar they probably should state otherwise, otherwise we get an absolute torrent of AI slop that degrades the quality of commentary on this site.

Suggestion box or not, I'd like to see a bit more scrutiny around AI-generated images.

Simtropolis x sc4pac: a new way to install plugins
Shadow Assassin replied to smf_16's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Just a heads-up that the SC4E LEX now supports sc4pac, so you'll be able to download packages from there too! -
poll SC4 Building Styles Community Vote
Shadow Assassin replied to Ulisse Wolf's topic in SC4 Modding - Open Discussion
We can have multiple UI styles, from memory (so 800x600 could have smaller images and corresponding UI files) But also the game allows scrolling within UI elements (again, from memory) - I'm not sure if the building styles dialog window allows this. --- That being said, I feel like we're having at least three discussions here simultaneously: what do we name the tilesets? how do we present the UI? and what appears to be an abandoned discussion around having an expanded IID range that gives us a little bit more room to breathe. Can we address these one at a time? -

I wouldn't ask Copilot to give us a definition for our building styles. It lacks context. Most of these 64 styles you mention are kind of esoteric, and also extremely specific. If you break it down to broader regions it becomes a bit easier for the player to digest. -

Hello! I've not read any of this thread so take this as a grain of salt (and some of you may want to continue being salty but I don't care, too old for that stuff) ...but what if: We shift the entire IID range downwards, so that we get more defined styles, (i.e., from 200 right through to 201), the community gets the 202 and 280 ranges to do with as they will. This would give us significantly more breathing room, and let us define more granular styles. For instance, I would suggest the following, if we want to fill in 4 Maxis, and 28 general. Note I don't care about names as such, I'll leave that up to everyone: Vanilla Maxis Chicago 1890 Maxis New York 1940 Maxis Houston 1990 Maxis Euro 2000 Pre-defined Western Europe (France, Switzerland and west Germany) Central Europe (Poland, east Germany, Hungary, former Yugoslavia) Eastern Europe (Belarus, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, Russia) Northern Europe (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland) UK + Ireland West Mediterranean (Spain, Italy) East Mediterranean (Greece, Cyprus, Turkey) Middle East North Africa Central Africa Southern Africa Central America South America Australia & New Zealand Oceania Japan China East Asia South-East Asia India Midwest USA Contemporary ... ... ... ... ... ... lol no If anything there's been far too much of a proliferation of TLAs (three letter acronyms) in the community in general. It's a good thing that abbreviations like CAM, NAM, SPAM, etc have that feature on ST that explain what they mean.

bugs Simtropolis 9.0.x - Bugs & Issues Report Thread
Shadow Assassin replied to Cyclone Boom's topic in Simtropolis Related
(edit: yes I realised I posted about this last month, but considering the state of ST's server these days it's honestly not surprising that it didn't pop up for me at all) Couple of issues on mobile. I remember this was fixed a while ago but it's come back again - the popup is very wide and the forums have a similar problem as well. IIRC it was something invisible in the header pushing everything out.- 1,131 Replies

It's still on the old server, yes. I'm currently investigating why this is occurring, sorry about the issues you're having downloading. I suspect it may be either CloudFlare or the server load balancer playing silly buggers here.

The Future of SC4 Modding: The Matter of Digital vs. Disc, and Windows vs. macOS in the DLL Era
Shadow Assassin replied to Tarkus's topic in SC4 Modding - Open Discussion
Sony have actually done this with PS2 --> PS3 backwards compatibility in the past, so I wouldn't use them as a shining example lol Regarding Steam no longer being updated on Win7, Valve also dropped support for older MacOS versions at the same time. Steam will still run OK (ish) on Windows 7 machines, but in this case Valve had to drop support due to the underlying web browser also dropping support for Windows 7 (and quite frankly, about time, too). You still have access to your Steam games even if support has ended for your chosen operating system. -
Hello all. In the interests of transparency, this is what's happening with the SC4E side of things over the coming weeks. SC4D Wiki rebuild - as part of the move to our shiny new infrastructure (no, we're not taking donations ) we need to get the Wiki up to date onto a modern version of Mediawiki. This is a huge, huge job as every single article currently hosted there will need to be migrated, checked for any templating issues, and then verified that it appears as it should. The current SC4D wiki is still online and will be staying with the existing webhost until this is done. SC4D forums migration - due to how the server is setup, it's not a straightforward job just to copy and paste the forums from the old server onto the new (unlike SC4E itself), so that will take some time to move across to the new server. Improved functionality to some parts of the site - as part of a drive to improve the quality of our services there'll be a few minor changes here and there (particularly on the exchange side of things). Keep an eye out! As always - please let us know if you run into problems with the new server (downloads not working etc). As it's new infrastructure (and a new dawn after the nightmare that was the old host), there's 100% going to be teething issues, but it will be significantly more reliable going forward. -- SA

Hey guys, on mobile I'm seeing this happen - horizontal scrolling seems to have sneaked in when it shouldn't. I think there's a bad width setting somewhere. This only started happening recently.- 1,131 Replies

Hey there, I work a lot with Google Adsense and the like and unfortunately there is nothing we can do globally. All we can do is set what categories of ads we want to show, and generally that's as much as we can do and sometimes "non family friendly" ads slip through. What you *can* do, however is click on the little blue/white X in the top right corner of the ad, click on "Send Feedback", then click on "This ad is inappropriate". Once you've done that, said lady with tentacles (or whateveritis) will not show up again, but also I'd suggest getting an adblocker with a Do-Not-Track extension. They show ads based on what you've searched for in the past

Can I flood Simtropolis with AI-generated BATs?
Shadow Assassin replied to Propfam's topic in SC4 - Custom Content
No. Okay, so, for the AIbros who are salivating at this opportunity, I'll make it simple and also tell you to piss off: AI does not have object persistence. Create an image of a BAT, it has to stay consistent in all four zooms and angles. AI is not capable of making that distinction with static images which are taken at multiple zoom levels and rotations - not right now, and it's always going to end up with those classic inconsistencies, like five fingers instead of four, etc. Also City Journals are meant to be expressions of human creativity, not some content that's churned out to appease the almighty algorithm. TLDR: don't expect this to happen any time soon.- 5 Replies

The Future of SC4 Modding: The Matter of Digital vs. Disc, and Windows vs. macOS in the DLL Era
Shadow Assassin replied to Tarkus's topic in SC4 Modding - Open Discussion
We're not asking, just suggesting it as a possible option (also buying a Windows laptop is an option. So is building a Linux machine). Even if you could install Windows ARM on Apple Silicon you wouldn't be able to use these DLLs either due to them being 32-bit only (no universal runtime). I think @rsc204 pretty much covered why it's a non-starter for DLL modding to be supported on MacOS. It's not something we have any control over. They also did it to enforce their walled garden as well -
The Future of SC4 Modding: The Matter of Digital vs. Disc, and Windows vs. macOS in the DLL Era
Shadow Assassin replied to Tarkus's topic in SC4 Modding - Open Discussion
Just to clarify regarding @Tarkus's post - this was actually a very difficult decision to make, but considering our resources are incredibly limited (it's a 21 year old game, after all!) We have to choose our battles to fight. Note that you'll also be able to use the Windows version in WINE, so Linux users also don't miss out. In addition, this could also be another option for people on Mac (especially as Asahi Linux gains traction - to my knowledge, it's getting support for x86 applications very soon).. TL:DR; if you want the full feature set these DLL mods offer, in general you will need to use the 1.1.641 version of SC4. -
I understand if you're reluctant to unzip things... Imagine how Tobias Funke feels.

[sc4pac] Let's write our own package manager
Shadow Assassin replied to memo's topic in SC4 Modding - Open Discussion
lol I mentioned the same thing about Java apps to @memo. I've been looking into possible approaches for the GUI, would be very happy to hear any input into it! -
Can you try OpenJDK 8? It's still supported (and will be til end 2026). I suspect something got changed in a recent OpenJDK11 build. Sadly we don't currently support OpenJDK 17 or newer - this is only because the installer was originally built by someone else in the early 2010s.

Hmm, this should have been added to the NAM installer as I had patched it prior to the release. It seems it wasn't updated - sorry about that 😅. I'll need to do some further testing with the installer though it's likely that it'll be rebuilt anyway (just hoping I can get around to it before the next release - RL is a bit busy for me at the best of times)
