In today's update we will be looking at southeastern sections of Middle Township, namely the area around Whitesboro and Burleigh, the marshland on either side of the North Wildwood causeway , and Hereford Inlet. Seven Mile Beach Island, as the name implies, stretches seven miles between Hereford Inlet in the south to Townsend's Inlet to the north. As with all the barrier islands, it is seperated from the mainland by a one to 2 mile wide swath of marshland and an extensive network of creeks and ponds. Hello all. As I write this, Cape May County is again in the crosshairs of a hurricane. Tropical Storm Sandy is predicted to strengthen to hurricane force before striking Cape May County's beaches. Unlike past storms, which sideswiped the region on thier way north, this one is hitting the region dead on. Before the coming of the Europeans, the Lenni Lenape natives had built an extensive network of trails across southern New Jersey. Hello again. Well, we weathered the storm here fairly well. Fortunately , Hurricane Irene weakened to a category 1 and passed offshore of Cape May County, making landfall just north of Atlantic City,(25 miles northeast of the region) rather than going up Delaware Bay as expected. Add that to the fact that the storm passed while the tide was falling, sparing the region from the catastrophic flooding. At the moment, the core of the hurricane is about 100 miles offshore, and is due to hit within 4 to 6 hours. Winds at the center have increased to 90 mph, making this a potentially devastating storm. The morning's high tide brought severe flooding to the barrier island communities, and the water has risen over the Garden State Parkway and all the causeways. Those left on the islands...

In today's update we look at the village of South Seaville, in central Dennis Township In the late 1600s- early 1700s, the colonial government was becoming concerned about the isolation of Cape May County. Without ties to the rest of the colony, the region was becoming a haven for pirates and smugglers. In today's update , we head eastbound from South Dennis on NJ 83 Route 83 cuts eastward across the southern portions of Dennis Township, through the Beaver Swamp tile. As this is another unnamed section of Dennis Township, I'm naming it for the primary terrain feature . Beaver Swamp lies south of the highway, and is a federally protected wildlife sanctuary. In today's update we continue south on Delsea Drive (NJ route 47) to the town of Goshen in Middle Township. Goshen is one of Cape May County's oldest towns. In 1703, Aaron Leaming bought the land here to raise cattle. By 1710, a town was founded. Like its neighbor Dennisville to the north, Goshen was built on lumber and shipbuilding. In today's update, we continue south down Delsea Drive to the Sluice Creek tile. There are many rural areas in Cape May County where there is no town, per se, so I'm getting the names of these areas from nearby landmarks (creeks, beaches, or proximity to some other town). This is one of these areas. Sluice Creek is a southern branch of Dennis Creek and in this part of the county forms the boundary between Dennis Township and Middle Township to the south.
