Greece
Today, we're returning to one of the world's most beautiful and magical countries - Greece. Our trip starts off with a scene from the Dodecanese Islands in the southern Aegean Sea - where quaint fishing villages like Halki dot the shorelines. Between the pristine blue waters of the coast and the charming Greek villas that hug the harbours, they're the perfect destination for a relaxing holiday.
Greece's unique natural landscapes are truly impressive - and few places an compare to the extraordinary Meteora. Since the 1300s, the local monks here have been building monasteries high up on these steep rocks - there's really no other place like it on Earth.
Ancient Greece was home to some of the world's most impressive civilizations - and although many of their buildings may be long gone, their legacy lives on through their countless new inventions and ideas. Here we see a scene from Ancient Mycenae - although it may be in complete ruins today, back in 1350 BCE it was one of the country's most impressive Acropolis sites and was a strategic center of power in Ancient Greece.
We travel into Greece's capital city of Athens for our next destination - the country's most iconic remaining landmark, the Parthenon. Half treasury and half temple - this famed structure was completed in 432 BCE and sits on top of the monumental Acropolis, high above the city of Athens below. Ongoing restoration projects over the decades have attempted to bring this landmark back to former glory - Ottoman conquests and Venetian sieges (just to name a few) over the centuries were behind much of the damage seen today.
Athens is a bustling capital city today - here we see a scene from Eleftheriou Venizelou Street in the heart of the city. This section of downtown Athens includes a number of prominent educational and historical buildings such as the National Library of Athens, National and Capodistrian University of Athens, The Academy of Athens, and the Arsakeio School.
Greece is well known for it's beautiful, pristine coastline and rugged interior - and the beautiful island of Cephalonia is one of the country's best examples. It's especially impressive when viewed from high above.
The last stop on our trip will be one of Greece's most beautiful islands - Santorini. Back in 1646 BCE, a massive volcanic eruption blew the top off of the island - dramatically changing its look and turning it into one of the continent's most stunning sights. The small towns and villages flanking the steep cliffsides like Oia offer some truly extraordinary views of the sea below.
