#20yearsSC4 Challenge
A tribute to the creativity that gives us to SimCity 4

 

With the summer solstice and the warm air we feel it means that we are in the middle of summer and therefore a period of holidays and rest. That's why we decided to create a complex challenge that we can define as a Madness Challenge that involves the three most discussed and complex topics of the SimCity 4 community:

The Challenge

The challenge we have designed is very complex and insidious because it is 3 challenges put together

  1. Airport Challenge - The construction of an international airport overcoming the geographical barriers and infrastructure that are present
  2. Interchange Challenge - The construction of Interchange RHW overcoming the geographical and infrastructure barriers that are present
  3. Seaport Challenge - The construction of commercial ports overcoming the geographical barriers and infrastructures that are present

Because of the complexity of the entire challenge, players can also choose to do only one or two or all of the challenges listed here to ensure that all players can have the posssibilities to participate in this challenge. When posting the challenge participation post you must indicate which challenge category you are participating in

The region we have developed for this challenge has been calibrated for any player as we have conceived this challenge as a kind of benchmark on your planning skills, ability to build and solve the problems that are posed to you.

In total there are the following cities in the region

  1. 4 Large cities for airports
  2. 3 Large cities for Seaports + 1 Medium city for Seaport
  3. 2 Large cities for Interchange

The region has already been worked out and neighbourhood connectors have already been inserted. You cannot change the names of the cities as they indicate which challenge you have to follow. You also need to connect all the connectors in the neighborhood to each other

Because of the traps we have placed in the various cities (Some traps we have placed are really bitchy) we have decided that members of the challenge committee will be available to provide help and advice to overcome your difficulties. For any help or advice we advise you to publish your difficulties here or you can use the SC4Devotion and Simtropolis discord servers

Rules of the challenge

If you want to participate in the challenge, you must first read the challenge code of conduct. These rules apply to all challenges, and complying with these rules allows the challenges to run more smoothly.  You can see the code of conduct for the challenges here

 

In addition to this rule we have decided on additional rules specifically for this challenge

  1. Aesthetics & Realism - Ensure no main components present in your airport, seaport and interchange is missing, and that the minor details are present to the best of your ability as a player. We encourage contestants to research these facilities to get inspiration and guidance on how they really are like.
  2. It is forbidden to move or alter neighborhood connections
  3. Other kinds of terraforming are allowed within reason, so long as the original shape / layout of the terrain is recognizable
  4. You can use mods that only alter the aesthetics of the terrain, tree and water
  5. You must follow the list of requirements to participate in the challenge
  6. You must OBLIGATORILY follow the post about the Requirements to participate in the challenge as not following the requirements involves NOT PARTICIPATING IN THE CHALLENGE

We also decided to include a recommended rule regarding modding

IF YOU ARE DEVELOPING/HAVE DEVELOPED MODS FOR AIRPORTS, SEAPORT AND RHW SIGNS WE RECOMMEND YOU PUBLISH THESE MODS TO MAKE THE CHALLENGE MORE FUN AND IMPROVE THE GAMEPLAY FOR OTHER PLAYERS

SC4Devotion Outage

Due to the PHP 8.1 update, it caused SC4Devotion and consequently also the LEX to be blocked by blocking people from downloading mods. For this reason we are working on creating Packs or Modpacks to be able to allow people to download mods again. For this reason we advise you to follow this page, the SC4Devotion support page on Simtropolis, SC4Devotion Homepage and the Simtropolis and SC4Devotion discord servers to receive further information and updates

Instructions 

To participate you must post your images within this thread by September 23, 2023 All images received from September 23 onward will be excluded. The voting phase will be announced after two weeks (around October 4, 2023) to complete the verification steps and resolve irregularity issues. Voting lasts one month and will end November 2, 2023 (approximately)

    Infrastructure Madness

    Requirements

    In order to participate in the challenge you must follow the following requirements

    1. Network Addon Mod 47 or later with 4GB Full controller. You must have mandatorily installed Real HighWay (RHW), Real RailWay (RRW), Hybrid Railway (HRW) and High Speed Rail Project (HSRP) as these are NAM features used extensively in the various challenge cities. We recommend using Maxis Highway Ovveride (MHO) as it allows help for situations involving RHW 4S, RHW Tunnel Construction and also allows easier construction of cloverleaf interchnage. 
    2. You must use this region to participate in the challenge 
    3. You can use Diagonal Bridge Enabler (Removes Water) 
    4. You can use mods that allow you to place road signs and street lights for RHW
    5. You can use the Dark Nite Mod 
    6. You can use mods that change the appearance of the terrain, tree and sea in respect of the Rule 5
    7. You can use the mod that enables god tools in mayor mode while respecting Rules 3 and 4 
    8. THE FOLLOWING MODS ARE BANNED: Maxis Highway, Maxis Airport and all mods that follow the composition of Maxis Airport, JENEX Prefabricated Airports, Regional Airport V.1 (Road Enabled) 1.0, TL-SCF-Heretic Modular Regional Airport 1.5 and Nice International Airport Modular Pack of mattb325

    For seaports, participants should choose among the listed custom content, without needing them all from the start.

    For airport mods specifically, these are highly dependent on one another, the most reliable way to get them to work is to get them all; or at the very least download some components first and complete with the rest if issues with dependencies or missing content arise.

    For seaports and highways content, participants should choose among the listed custom content, without needing them all from the start.

    In addition, your report has allowed us to consider one aspect in which there are people who have developed specific mods on airports, RHW Signs and seaports.  As a result, we've updated the phrases. We've added a recommended rule that recommends people who developed mods related to Seaports, Airports and RHW Signs to publish these mods.

    I suggest making the rules less strict to provide more flexibility, creativity, variability and encourage more people to participate.

    We've updated rule 1 and 2 by merging them into one rule that's easier to understand. For the issue of NAM features required we have updated the requirements where we have recommended the use of MHO (involving a map update to replace an MHO FA neighborhood connector). The RHW, RRW, HRW and HSRP features remain mandatory to install as they are widely used in cities where the challenge is to be carried out.

    Please don't be mad with me as I say the next unpopular thing, but I don't think that organizing a challenge now that so many dependencies are trapped in SC4D is an accurate idea. This way, people with more resources are already enjoying a significant headstart.

    I would rather someone expedite the process of fixing / migrating the SC4D first, rather than invest time to outline the rules, resources and t&c of a challenge.

    Unless this is something that is entirely beyond your control and cannot be fixed by own means. Again - I'm just voicing my opinion, so don't read between the lines unnecessarily as I do respect your work.

    The challenge had been planned long before the crisis erupted. So we decided to move forward to give a sense of normality. Also because the crisis is radically changing the plans of NAM 48 in which it will be a version with few new content and many bugfixes and we think that NAM 49 will also have the same fate.

    Currently almost all of the NAM Team is working quickly to restore LEX but it is not an easy thing that can be accomplished immediately. As we write cleanitol, documentation as well as verifying that all things are ready for players. What I can say that soon there will be other modpacks that are about to come out

    That's true, it's like a house of cards or domino sets - if one element falls down, all others will follow. This is why I said that it might be difficult for some to produce the results they imagined in the same way that it affects your plans regarding the new release of NAM.

    I might not have read everything correctly. Do we have to build and airport/seaport in all of the cities? Or can we pick only one of the designated cities?

    The cities we have designed are specific to the type of construction you need to do. If you want to participate in the Seaport challenge then you only need to build in cities with the Seaport name. If you want to participate in the Interchange challenge then you only have to build in cities with the name Interchange. If you want to participate in the Airport challenge then you only have to build in cities with the name Airport.

    Since the construction of airports and Seaports is very complex and can occupy two or more cities. For this reason that we have provided 4 city areas. The participant is free to use as many designated cities as they sees fit to complete the challenge

    Another question as someone interested in participating in the challenge, specifically in building the airport. I have some of the airport content already that i've downloaded before, including some from the LEX. I know I have all the AC Prop Mega Props and Essentials. Im not the best person at organizing the plugins folder although i tried my best, and i believe I have the ACAircraft Requests as well. 

    But anyway, my question is. Is there any possibility that the organizers of the challenge might provide the unavailable LEX Files in any other way if they have the files themselves ?

    For example even some stuff from the STEX require some dependencies that only exist on the LEX.

    I don't quite understand the task of the challenge. Is the goal to just build an Airport/Intersection/Seaport or also build an entire (realistic looking) city which includes the Airport/Intersection/Seaport? While Airports and Seaports irl are usually in or next to large cities, Highway Intersections can also often be found right outside a city.

    The challenge would be to just build an Airport or Intersection or Seaport. Players are only free to participate in one of the challenges (Only Airport or Only seaport - Only interchange) or two challenges (Example: Airport - Interchange or Airport - Seaport or Interchange - Seaport) or all three challenges (Airport - Seaport - Interchange)

    I got two more questions:

    There's a HSRP line connecting the two Interchange tiles. There is no second HSRP line in Interchange A though. So I guess it just doesn't have to be connected to anything in A?
     

    Second question: Interchange A requires Hybrid Railway to cross water. I had multiple ideas how to do this, but none worked:

    • Rail bridge or Monorail bridge. Doesn't work, because rail bridges have no monorail paths and monorail bridges have no rail paths. Perhaps in the far future this could be added to the NAM
    • Underwater tunnel. Doesn't work for the same reasons. Will never be modded either, since iirc tunnels are .exe stuff, not .dat stuff.
    • with a station, separate HRW into rail and monorail, then build separate bridges/tunnels for those. Probably not allowed because a station is not an interchange. Also with that logic, all RHWs could be "connected" simply by placing a subway station at every RHW neighborhood connection stump, then connecting the stations underground.
    • Fake tunnel using the HRW Subway Converter as tunnel portal. Not allowed because of Rule 4: "You can use mods that only alter the aesthetics of the terrain, tree and water"
    • build a dam with HRW on top. Probably not allowed because of Rule 3: "Other kinds of terraforming are allowed within reason, so long as the original shape / layout of the terrain is recognizable". Also the waterways could be considered a network as well, and a dam would separate those.
    • something something DBE. Doesn't work. First of all, DBE is incompatible with RRW (which is mandatory in NAM), because the RRW override the DBE, so you can't build rail bridges anymore. Second, even if you remove NAM (except RHW and HSRP because you want to keep those intact in your city tile) from your plugin folder and build a DBE maxis rail on pillars, then put NAM back into your plugin folder, which turns the DBE maxis rail on pillars into DBE RRW on pillars and then plop the HRW puzzle pieces on the RRW, then for some reason that only removes the pillars (RRW is now floating) but doesn't apply the monorail paths or HRW catenary props. I Might add a screenshot later.

    So yeah, for now I say it's impossible. But I will do more testing.

    1 If you noticed in Interchange A you have to use a lot of HRW because HRW can be connected with HSRP and RRW.....

    • Are you sure?...  RRW can have tunnels. Same thing HSRP with mods
    • Rail and RHW networks are completely different operating networks. You can build stations that allow this thing. (Remember. You are free to insert a scenography to make the images of the challenge more alive)
    • HRW Subway Converter you can use it safely. Rule 3 refers to all those mods like CPT Italia Tree controller etc...
    • Yes. Causeways are allowed within a certain limit (Rule 4)
    • DBE can be useful in another thing...

    Hello all, hereby I'll show you my add for this competition for the SEAPORT element. Though time is scarce lately and therefore the cities are not complete (yet), i am happy with the three harbors I created.

    I'll start with SEAPORT B, inspiration: old harbor section of SINGAPORE

     

    This is the overview: it contains 4 sea parts.

    - far right is a small section of the containter terminal, but more of that in SEAPORT C

    - Down central: the Dirty Harbor. (No one knows exactly what happens there, and nobody wants to know basically)

    - Down left: Beach area

    - Central: Downtown with the Old Harbor. This is where the city started many centuries ago and was the first harbor.
