Hi Huston. I seem to have a problem with Neihu Plaza as it always show an orange building when plopped. What is the solution to this? Thanks. :)

I'll second Jmsepe here, all I'm getting is a building from one of the asian packs, is there an issue with render settings in game at all?

    Unfortunately, I haven't exactly got a solution to it. But the model is in the files, and for some reason people's games can't read them. Mine's working so I can't exactly come up with any reason for why unless I re-lotted it myself. But honestly, I have no idea how to create an entirely new lot for it. I'm still quite the amateur on the file configuration side of lotting. :( I'd appreciate any help people could give me in that department.

    It must be a conflict with another model. Two buildings share one instance. You can try to eliminate this by change the (Huston's)BAT's instance to a random generated number.

    Or Huston, can you relot it? :)

    Yeah, I intended it to use it as a dummy with my BAT as the prop.

    I'm not actually sure how to change the instance #. Relotting sounds like a better solution. I'll try doing that instead :)

    Could anyone offer to lot these two buildings as growables? I haven't had much luck myself, and time's not on my side lately. Any takers to fix the problems for these BAT releases once and for all?

    Yeah, the files are all on my STEX upload of Neihu; and thanks for taking it up. The models should come up just fine in LE. :)

    May take a while, though. My RL is pretty packed these days for private reasons (of the pleasant kind), so I probably won't have time to start before next week.

    So, as I said a in another thread before, I've decided to try out and see if I could achieve bringing Times Square forward. Here's my start on Two Times Square so far. It's been textured so you can get the feel of what it's going to look like. Btw, if anyone could offer me good reference pictures the building, especially of the of the rooftop (not just a direct floor plan style image, but something that shows the design on the upper floors that I can't get on streetview on Google Earth :P ) that'd be great help to get this building up to scratch. I'm still a little baffled by the whole scheme of the rooftop since over-head views of the bldg don't give away much except for roof-junk.

     

    Note also, that these are not the final textures.

     

    So at 94 meters, I present to you the first stages of Two Times Square!

    It seems okay so far, but any input to make this better would be great. This'll be quite a long-term project, and since I won't get much done in November, this could still pick up speed by December and if all goes well, could be done on the same month. :)

    You are very brave taking this building on! References are scarce and the ones that are available don't give much away...

     

    I know this is early days but you seem to have some fundamental flaws with the structure of the building:

     

    1) I can only see references with 3 billboards, you have 4. Your bottom one doesn't exist, and your 2nd to bottom one comes up higher, mid-way to the 3rd exposed pole thing. Actually, the alignments of all the billboards are out slightly.

    2) The billboards themselves should be rather thick and the middle one has round edges. Yours are thin and sharp-edged

    3) The bottom of the upper-section of glass pretty much lines up with the bottom of the lowest exposed pole thing, just a tad lower. Yours is significantly lower.

    4) That grey piece at the front comes all the way to the ground (and of course there's another section of building in front)

    5) The back of the building where you have all-glass has a large cut-out section.

     

    Hope that's not too critical, but didn't want you to get too far down the track where it becomes too hard to fix. I look forward to seeing this progress :D

     

    Ps. Texturing at this early stage is going to slow down your render times, especially the reflections in the glass. Something to consider ;)

    Thanks for the tips, but don't worry, some of those i'm quite aware of :P

     

    1) In terms of billboards - they're placeholders and aren't the actual ones I'm working on. They're just there so I can see how it looks roughly. I still have to accurately make and place them one I do get around to that :)

    2) Definitely, will get around to it when I start modelling the billboards.

    3) That I didn't catch on the google streetview :P I'll definitely need to work on scaling that properly.

    4) It'll be continuing through as you said, I'm just modelling the top portion of the building first, and will get around to the bottom part afterwards ;)

    5) Yeah, I'll be needing to model that too, only really got around to the main rectangular portion before I stopped for a moment :P

     

    Oh yeah, and true that about the rendering, although I did manage to get a new laptop a little over a month ago - glad to say that this rendered within seconds which should be helpful once it's ready to be textured properly:P

     

    Thanks for the input reddon! Hopefully you can provide more critique further on in case I have any other things to fix up :D

    Btw, I'm still curious about how you add noise to your building textures. I've been trying to apply that to some of mine but haven't found any options that allow for it. Could you tip me on how to do it?

    Hmmmm... not sure what you mean I don't do anything special. 80% of the time I use PS to create the textures, or if I create noise textures directly in 3DS Max, which is pretty rare, under the diffuse slot in the Arch & Design material I select Noise instead of Bitmap - Is that what you're looking for?

     

    Sometimes I add procedural grime, Darn has made a great tutorial

    This pic was taken from the game Tycoon City New York. There are some Times Square buildings available as landmarks. I don't know if you have the game, it's worth taking a look at it. I don't think it's a perfect and decent reference, but it made give you some insight in the ground geometry of that one:

    Quick search gave that. Try looking up surrounding buildings and views from inside of them. Since a hotel is located inside 2 Times Square, the chances are weak you'll find a floor plan. In the next few days I will try my beast to dig up some photos, but I can't promise because I don't have a regular access to a computer nowadays :P

    Kind of, but now that I think of it, there may be a possiblity that I may create a version with holographic screens in place of the usual present day billboards...just to shake things up and give it my signature sci-fi tastes :P
