Real Life City Recreation Tutorial

Real Life City Recreation Tutorial

105 members have voted

  1. 1. Which real life city would you like to recreate in simcity 4?

  2. 2. Do you have the basics (Terraformer or mapper, PIMX, Reader, Lot editor)

Well... I could try to make it all orthogonal, but it would definetly lose the whole "recreation part" I mean, the whole point is to be able to overcome those things, but it is a whole differen thing to "create your own version" and then pretend it is the real deal. I guess this Houston thing will have to be a "side project" until I can figure out something different. I ned to study it better... I might be jumping into conclusions too soon.. so I will have a look again.

Anyways... I see some more votes, and up to now I got

1) Chicago

2) NYC

3) Tokyo/Hong Kong (wont happen since kelistmac will be doing Hong Kong, and it would be a waste of time to have 2 guys doing the same =)... )

4) London/Paris

I dont mean to let anyone down... but I got the feeling Chicago will be!!

I would like to see Chicago done because it is very similar to Toronto and would help me with my creation. If I can learn enough from this thread I'm thinking of expanding my project from just downtown Toronto to the entire Greater Toronto, Hamilton, Oshawa, and Barrie area.

i'VE been to those locatoins.  family in Halton Hills Ont

Halton Hills is a cool place. I lived in Hamilton for 4 years and I'm very familiar with lots of the smaller towns and cities around the GTA. Commuted from Hamilton to Whitby for 4 months and always took the back roads home through Halton Region.

I was hoping for something American, specifically in the other category of LA or San Diego. San Francisco, while a wonderful city, would probably require too many compromises to be made in-game due to the hills and transport network, not to mention the grid pattern.

So something So. Cal like. Chicago for me would be the next best thing. I'm not really interested in personally doing a recreation, but would like to be able to capture that "dense-but-not-really-dense" feel that you get in Los Angeles or Chicago suburbs, where the low-density housing is so close that it feels dense anyways, but you can still see the ground from above (unlike New York City).

Also, not to make this a RHW tutorial, but an extensive use of RHW would really allow the capture of the scale of the highway projects, at least in US cities.

Hi guys! I just wanted to apologize... Right now I'm not home! Lol... I told Jonathan I was going on a trip.. But totally forgot to tell you all in here!! Soooooo.. Right now I'm "home", which is buenos aires... Yup.. Argentinian.. It's just that I'm living in the USA... I would like to post a request in here too.. It has been one of my projects since I started the game, to build my hometown buenos aires. But it is because of the lack of buildings that I never could!! I invite you all to please look for buenos aires in the internet, and see if someone could make a little contribution to my project!

Buildings I need are not hard at all.. In fact, they are all basically 1x 4 buildings.. Being 1 tile wide and 4 deep (buildings are very stretched) I'm not looking for nothing that stands out, like landmarks and stuff.. Just fillers!! And if you look for them, you will see how easy they are... 10-12 stories, 1 tile, 4 deep... And they are white, with balconies.. You can't miss it, it is the typical buenos aires thing...

Sooooo, again, I apologize for my absence ( next 10 days ) and humbly make this request.. Which in fact, if someone can, variations are easy... 1 white, 1 with bricks, they all look alike, they just change in colors... If someone is willing to do them... I will help in everything I can.. Please please please!!

Oh Im sorry.. Jonathan is kelistmac :)

But yeah.. If you know anyone interested in doing me that favor.. Or willing to bat.. Please let me know.. I will be working on the things requested here.. But it extremely important for me, to also have that project on its tracks.. After all.. We all in here have that dream of recreating our hometown.. And to be honest, I have all the roads.. All the subways.. I got everything set.. I just need some buildings... I tried to do them myself.. But omg I'm a mess at batting.. That's why I signed up for the batting school.. But I'm starting lose my faith about that lol!!

your protege is handling that, with a special emphasis on power plants and water sources.

edit: i vote chicago and hong kong. both would be fairly easy I think, Chicago moreso. Both would look fantastic.

Wonder who that might be?  :ooh:

I've actually encountered a problem though with it that will need fixing. Check my thread if you're interested, though it's not Power related (the simulation is on pause forever thankfully).

Anyway, I can't partake in this, but I'd love to see London recreated, though I'd probably be happy with anywhere. I'm not sure if anyone has ever attempted a London recreation before, and as a Brit, this'd be my vote and favourite to see.

    Hello guys:

Today I'm here because I want to share with all of you my first steps recreating Hong Kong, this is my third time working in this city and one of the things I want to work is the transport system, because Hong Kong has an amazing transport system with all type of infrastructures.

It should be Tokyo, I want to see those highways in Japan in Simcity plus its a big dense urban jungle, not to mention is is the most populous metropolitan area in the world. :D

Oh forgive me, I just want to see Tokyo that badly. Such a biased answer. Hahaha :P

But Hong Kong is one of the world's densest. At any rate there are a lot more HK bats than Tokyo ones, even thought there is a strong Japanese SC4 group (or was, I think a lot of it's tapered off).

Besides, you could always try to recreate it, as a city recreation is really a labor of love (or something like that). It's usually not easy, but can be fun; it's more work than just making something that looks nice, that's for sure.

I won't dare recreate a city as big as Tokyo, not to mention that unlike NY there are only a few really significant buildings available for Simcity but since I love that city so much, I am creating a city with a touch of Tokyo but its not something worth calling a recreation.

There's more reason to love Tokyo than Hong Kong, just Google it. Hahaha

    Sorry I'm really biased. #Sorrynotsosorry

Remember.. I'm not only doing nyc or Chicago... Those are the ones that got the most votes.. I'm open to new things... And just to be cleared.. I tried Tokyo 4 times.. So I know how to do it :)

Right now, to be quite honest, I find myself wanting to do London really bad! I mean.. The only thing stopping me is the fact that I need more London like buildings, but, after some google earth.. Well they look kinda Paris like.. So maybe I could work with that.. Right?

Tokyo will be included.. And I will give you guys some tips that I have picked up over my experience on recreating it

In the first picture, why is there a huge hole in your road? And also, how did you get so many trees in your buildings and your roads?

London was my vote, I'd love to see it recreated. :)

Are you referring to the 5-way avenue intersection currently swarmed by pedestrians? I'm not sure how you concluded it was a hole.

    Alright guys!

Well... first of all.. I wanna apologize for not being here for the last 10 days. I traveled to Argentina, and later to Paraguay...

Before I start, Ive seen some new votes.. the table now shows..

    1) Chicago

    2) Other cities (but not one in common, and no specifications or votings were made)

    3) Tokyo

    4) New York

So, it still seems that Chicago will have the priority.

Before I start a new thread (although, I think I should just continue the tutorial on this one), I will give you a little introduction about myself..

My name is Criss.. some of you now me, some dont.. Ive been playing the game since it came out. Im a transportation geek, even though in RL I have nothing to do with it =P

I was born in Argentina, son of diplomats, I lived in Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina, Dominican Republic (right now), and visited of course, the USA, Uruguay, Peru, and France.

Im 24, about to turn 25... I finished my undergraduate degree and received my degree in Accounting.. which I believe is Bachelor in Accounting in english, with concentration in Finances. my GPA was of 3.31 yay!

I was accepted to some universities for my masters degree.. but I chose Hult International Business School (ranked 17th by the Economist YAY again).. and Im going to Boston for the One year MIB (Master in International Business)...

I looooooooove cities, and I love travelling... thats why I love this game so much, because it gives me the chance to recreate any part of the world (with some limitations ugh ugh ugh).

I have a girlfriend currently studying in New York... she is really smart =) hopefully.. we can stay together and then as a birthday present she could get me a Porsche? I guess a kiss n hug will do =p

Hmmm... if anyone interested in my CV above, please hire me after graduation!! Gotta pay the bills.. and of course the Master LOL!!

Anyways... I just wanted to check up... tell you a bit about myself.. now.. to simcity...

My personal taste in cities is pretty much the same as most of you guys here... but if I was to choose my favorite cities, well then..

    1) New York City (I just love it.. and OMG the grid.. sorry fellas... I love the grid... GUILTY)

    2) London

    3) Paris

    4) Tokyo

    5) Chicago

Those probably ring a bell in your heads.. lol... yup.. pretty much the ones in the poll!!

Ive tried several times NYC.. of course, never finished it.. cause lets be real, everytime a new NAM comes out, you pretty much change tons of things.. an new buildings and new things, take you to better recreations.. but if I was to count, probably 9 times.. (and Im currently at the 10th.. which is AWESOME BELIEVE YOU ME)

Ive also tried Tokyo, like 3 times... I really focused on the Shibuya - Shinjuku area.. it turned out really well... but I lost them.. I drop my computer, and pretty much destroyed it... (I still dont know how that happened)... so I lost my content on that..

London.. good ol London.. tried it 2 times, but never had a good result... Hopefully we can try again together.. and make something out of this tutorial

And finally, for the winner of the city poll recreation, Chicago.. I HAVE NEVER EVER TRIED Chicago... so this should be interesting.. Ive been studying the maps.. I have a basic idea of how I wanna lay things.. and to be honest, there are 3 problems I could only spot at this point:

    1) The interchange, and rail junction near dowtown.. (the one near Greektown)

    2) The River/Canal.. dont know how Im going to approach this yet

    3) The angle of the Stevenson Expy, followed up by its interchange with I-90

    So...

Comment, share, lets keep it moving!!

Sorry for the long post, but it was important to show you guys Im still here, also that you know me.. and hopefully we can turn this thread not only in a tutorial but into a sharing experience for us all!!

Any progress or decision with this? Other has now overtaken Chicago in the polls, but I'm not sure which cities "other" represents.

Well, it would be nice to see what that "other" means to people... Lately I've been working with you on the manhattan project.. And I've been working a little on the Chicago.. Not too much though.. And I just saw the same.. But not with a new proposal or ideas..

Hey guys! sooooooo its been a really long time, and to be honest, I planned this, but RL got complicated. Im "back" at simcity 4, I was never gone, just didnt have the time to play in a serious way...

Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that I have started playing the Chicago recreation.

Without further ado I give you the "skeleton" Im using in order to mark where everything is going...

    Chicago1_zps1e57bb46.jpg

This is a general overview of the skeleton I mentioned. If you guys still want to go on with this tutorial, lets comment and I will be firing it up again!
