Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone knew if SimCity will run on Windows 8? :???:

I've checked the system requirements over at: http://www.simcity.c..._GB/buy/simcity but no luck. I also tried EA's help forums but no result either.

Thanks in advance,

:read: - For those who intend to use the Windows 8 would advise expressely reading the link below to learn because the specifications do not say if the game is compatible

:read: -

:???: - The compatibility issue is not about the game but if the Microsoft will change positions is to allow other DRM portals run in wINDOWS.

As the game needs access to the portal to execute then arises the doubt. So the specifications do not talk about the compatibility.

    Operating System: Windows XP/Vista/7

    RAM: 2GB

Graphics Card:ATI Radeon HD 2x00 or better or nVidia 7800 or better or Intel Series 4 integrated graphics or better

The thing is with Windows 8, it's more like a tablet OS, like iOS or Android. Because of this, apps and programs behave much the same way, they require you to upload them to the Windows Store and distribute them through there.

If a tablet version of Simcity comes out in the future, I can see it being released for Windows 8 then, but not at the same time it's released for PC/Mac.

Why anybody would want to upgrade to Windows 8 in the first place is beyond me, but that's just my opinion.

    Indeed.

And people should really pay attention to the link that NCGAIO provided above.

Windows 7 doesn't rely on a central "Microsoft Store", so there's no problem.

IMO, this is not a technical, but a commercial issue.

You see, when Valve released Steam, they didn't do so to do gamers a favour. Yes, Steam can have its advantages, but basically it was not released due to any technical necessity, but in order to build up an independent distribution channel - with the consequence of forcing everything into a closed system.

Other game publishers are trying to imitate this, one of them being EA with Origin.

And now even Microsoft jumps on the bandwagon and tries to route it all through its own "app store".

There you have a conflict of interests - releasing a game for Windows 7 so that Windows gamers buy it from you in order to play it on Windows is fine. However, releasing a game for Windows 8 so that Windows gamers by it through Microsoft and you probably need to pay Microsoft for it is an entirely different affair. Now add the fact that EA would certainly like to have such a closed and fully controlled distribution channel themselves (Origin in this case), and you can see how they'd be cutting their own flesh if they yielded to Microsoft too easily.

I believe we'll see even more publishers joining the fray and trying to establish their own, fenced-in online distribution channel, and this will cause some quarrels before the market settles.

I'm laughing because I had a totally different expectation of what this thread was going to be about. I thought it was going to be a comparison of how MS is doing to Windows 8 what EA is doing to Simcity 5.

But really, the comparison is striking.

Both companies are rebooting their products. Both are basing their design choices on a lower common denominator. Both are going after a market segment instead of trying to sell to the whole market. Both are ignoring calls from their respective communities to rethink their positions. Both are ignoring them.

And I already know that's just the tip of the comparison. As a poweruser I'm really fed up with Windows 8 and I'm not looking to downgrade to it at all. Maybe when Windows 9 comes around MS will wake up again and remember who their market is. MS may think that I'm not that important of a customer and the new market they are preparing for will replace me. Maybe they're right. But then again I just might become a customer of their competitors instead.

...and Windows 8 will not read DVDs. Goodbye physical media. Microsoft does what Microsoft wants, not you. The upcoming SimCity game will very likely be available on the Windows Store. You are just a pawn.

I am going to get a MacBook Pro by the way. It is the lesser of two evils.

Baertooth when you say that "both are going behind a market segment" forgets that the system is "whole market".

What is clear is that the giant the SO do not want to just be seeing companies earning billions of dollars on top of your product without having any part in it.

Why not also criticize the Apple Store?

Are several cases of developers they did much money in the closed environment and today no longer has a position so contrary to it.

If you get Windows 8, you will be able to play run any DVD, only when you get a film od DVD, you will need a special program like VLC or simillar to play it. Seriously, who has ever used a WMP since 2002? No sane person. This changes absolutely nothing.

And it's not really a wise idea to waste your money on apple computers. Yes, they are better in quite a few areas, but those advantages translate to them being 50-100$ more expensive.. not 1000$.

it would be funny if it wasn't really sad...

do people know that the windows app store and general enclosing of the windows experience is due to apple's model????

when they see how apple make buttloads of money on blind followers with their tightly closed system, they had to say to themselves: "let's do the same thing!!"

so now, you go to apple because "so long as to being f...., it's better to go to the original inventor of the system"??

also, as a desktop OS i also think windows 8 sucks and there's no reason to update from 7 BUT i saw a lot of misinformation on this thread:

thanks to desktop mode, windows 8 can run EACH AND EVERY application and HARDWARE running on windows 7...

the big problem is for how many more windows versions it will remain?

Why not also criticize the Apple Store?

Well considering this thread is about Windows 8, we would be going off topic.

Personally, I feel all Apple products are over-hyped, over-rated, and definitely over-priced. To pay thousands of dollars for a computer that can probably be built for less than half is just ridiculous.

But to get back on topic, as I mentioned before, I don't see how anybody would want to upgrade to Windows 8 unless you have:

    a. A touch screen computer

and b. You don't play any PC games

Because from the way it sounds, gaming companies don't like Windows 8 too much. OriginOS anybody?

Why not also criticize the Apple Store?

Apple lets developers have these choices:

    1. Use the Mac App store as the sole venue
    2. Use a differnet online store
    3. Use their own sites
    4. Use phsyical media

    Users can do the following:

    1. Download and install software from the Mac App store
    2. Download and install software from a website
    3. Download and install software from another eStore
    4. Download and install unsigned code
    5. Install software from a USB port and/or another computer
    6. Installl software from a DVD/CD/SD Card

Microsoft does allow most software to install from DVDs and most websites, because I've done it.

Beware there is a chance some software will not be fully compatible with Windows 8.

What is this talk of Windows 8 not running any physical media? I play SC4 on mine and SC2013 had no problems. Windows 8 is very much the same once you get past the start screen. :)

    I'll be back one day.

Windows 8 is similar code to windows 7 with a touch ui bolted to the front. Anything that runs on 7 should work on 8.

As for windows 8 not reading dvds what a load of c@#p my win 8 pc reads them just fine. I can install all my old games from dvd or install stuff from websites or services like steam without any trouble same as if I was using any previous version of windows.

The simcity beta ran fine on my win8 setup so I dont expect any problems with the full game.

At my work we have a Windows Surface Pro. We use it for app devlopment as the WSP is not even out yet. I got the chance to test it with games SC2013 Beta being one of them. I dont think i can comment on the Beta it self but i think i can say that it works just fine. i tend to use the pen when doing it. The only problems i some times have is when i want to zoom and rotate. As there tend to be done by gesters some times one finger hits the screen before the other making it go in to the move mode ( dont know that else to call it ) and not zoom. But please note that both the game and the tablet are in Beta. and the problems i had was not the game but the interactions of the tablet.

A couple people have already said it, but if it will run on windows 7, it will run on windows 8. Windows 8 is just an enhanced version of windows 7 with a different skin on top of it. All the metro features are optional. I've been using windows 8 since October and it really doesn't make much of a difference.

Look here what a staff member from EA said in response to a compatibility question on EA's own forum on 21 January, 2013.

Yes, it is compatible, according to the EA staff member.

Not all new computers run Windows 8.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

I also played the Beta on my Windows 8 computer. Didn't have so much as a hiccup, Though the touch screen wasn't the best tool for the game.
