According to this EA staff member, you will be able to. Whether it's true is beyond me.

As for Societies, I guess it's possible, although I've heard over at SC4 Devotion that SC4 doesn't run well. Can anyone else with some experience cement any of this?

Sc4 runs fine on my win8 pc. In fact it runs better than my old xp system with no ctd unless I forget about being careful with the nam puzzle pieces.

I'm running Simcity 4 (Steam and CD versions), Simcity 3000 unlimited, and Simcity 2000 (GOG/Dosbox version) all on Windows 7 and now on Windows 8. Stability can be wonky at times but overall no major issues. SC3000UL gave me the most problems and I think I had to actually copy the contents of the CD to one of my hard drives and install from there. For the Steam version of SC4 I run with these launch options (-CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 -CPUCount2 -intro:off) and have had good success. It will still occasionally crash to desktop after a few hours.

If those run on both win7 and win8...I'm sure Societies will as well (I never bought Societies so I can't personally vouch for that).

And I forgot to add, I ran the SC(2013) beta on windows 8 with no problems either.

Runs fine on my Windows 8 PC, which is a lower end dell inspiron 3520. As for societies, I have no idea. I have it- do you want me to load it and try and play it and tell you if it works?

SimCity 4 works, but it needs to be played in Windows Server 2003 compatibility mode. Right click on the shortcut, and on the program's name in its jumplist, and click on "Properties." The resulting window will have a "Compatibility" tab. Pick Windows Server 2003, and it should work fine. Playing without compatibility mode on works too, but crashes a lot (at least for me.) SimCity Societies works fine on Windows 8.

Can you not just do "Windows XP SP3" compatbility?

Yeah, but it'd be more buggy (not that I've tested it much). A lot of programs which stopped working after Vista required Windows Server 2003 compatibility, not XP. And that's around when SC4 stopped working 100%.

...and Windows 8 will not read DVDs. Goodbye physical media. Microsoft does what Microsoft wants, not you. The upcoming SimCity game will very likely be available on the Windows Store. You are just a pawn.

I am going to get a MacBook Pro by the way. It is the lesser of two evils.

This is not true.

Windows 8 can fully read physcial media and install software from phsyical media.

Windows 8 also allows you to run and install software from other sites as well.

Windows 8 allows you to install and run Steam without any real issues (you cannot run a game while downloading another item from Steam on W8)

Windows 8 lacks video codecs to play most movies including DVDs and Blu-rays.

Microsoft did this because they didn't want to pay $300M+ to DVD and Blu-ray forums for the licenses.

Apple also has an Appstore, though they don't force developers to use it.

+1 what Xeno said.

And remember that the Windows Store is only for Windows 8 Modern apps. Not for desktop applications. E.g. Photoshop is a desktop application, and won't be in the Windows Store.

Did anyone manage to render a region on Windows 8?
SC4 crashes almost immediately after selecting the Hong Kong map or after the first few tiles on the Oahu map available on the site... Except that, gameplay seems ok, even with different plugins installed.

I start the game with:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Apps\SimCity 4.exe" -cpucount:1 -intro:off -w -customresolution:enabled -r1024x768x32

and it's running on an AMD Opteron 180 - Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe - 4 GB RAM - GeForce 8600GT 512MB

I brought a new Win 8 computer and transferred all my files. SC4 worked the same if not better on the new computer.

All SC4 mods, plugins and programs work on Windows 8!!!

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone knew if SimCity will run on Windows 8? :???:

I've checked the system requirements over at: http://www.simcity.c..._GB/buy/simcity but no luck. I also tried EA's help forums but no result either.

Thanks in advance,

hf123

Your answer is 'no'. I'm using W8 and doesnt run SC 5. I contacted EA support and they asked me if I wanted the refound.

Sad.

Thanks for letting us know of your experience. I am considering buying a new PC just for playing this game (sad, but true.) OK, so I admit, the PC will also be used in rendering drawings for some official work. I am afraid, despite the beta testers and what the EA guy "eakennedy" said, that it just might not work. I'm not going to take my chances, and will go with Win7 instead.

Yes you can run Windows 8 and Sim City.  I am running it just fine.  Keep in mind I kept crashing until I ran the shortcut from "Run As Administrator"

I have Win8 - installed SC through Origin without a problem and also played without any problem.

There is absolutely no problem. If someone with Win8 has a problem it is not a problem with Win8 but rather with their system.

Windows 8 is at it's core Windows 7. Just the Start Menu is different. Should work without any issue :).

There is a lot of misinformation here.  Windows 8 and SimCity work fine.  I have used it throughout each beta and now when I can actually get into a server it plays just as it would on any Windows 7 box.  In fact, every game I've played before on Windows 7 works on 8.  There seem to be no compatibility issues that I have come across yet.  If you are running into issues on 8, its most likely something with your computer, its hardware, or a driver issue.

Yes this is correct.  I wonder why someone from EA's technical support team would state that you cannot run Simcity 5 under Windows 8.

Windows 8 is basically Windows 7 with a new start menu and has a couple of other small features. The new start menu was designed with touch

screens in mind, and to keep a certain amount of consistency between the Xbox and PC menu layouts, as well as making it easy for novices and PC

users who prefer  to navigate by using touch screens instead of a mouse.

Like Freshman has stated above,  Windows 8's system core is basically Windows 7's system core! It's using the same source code as Windows 7 with some minor inclusions.

To install Simcity on Windows 8, It's actually better to uninstall the game and reinstall it again, and when you go to reinstall it click on the setup or install file, right mouse click and select

'Run as administrator' and then you game should work as long as this is what's really causing the issue.

If you're still having trouble, go to the exe file also known as the application file, click on the file using

the right mouse button and select properties, then click on the tab up the top that has the title 'Compatibility', then click on compatibility mode box

and select Windows 7. Only do this as a last resort if the game is not running under Windows 8 for you. I haven't purchased the game as yet, but I had the same problem with

another game in which I resolved the issue by using the above two options!

All the best

Jason

It works OK on Windows 8.1 64bit. Everything works good except for the occassional crash or messed up graphics. I can't get Simcity 3000 Unlimited to install, it just does the Simcity 3000 Ulimited blue install screen and then does nothing. Any help?
