I have been a persistent user of IE, which I always preferred over Netscape/Opera/Firefox/Chrome due to its consistent interface and its better integration of plugins (older versions). But it gradually started to lag behind, eg not supporting SVG, requiring that Adobe plugin, while others offered native support. Then came problems with scripts and the like, now that stupid merging of the address bar with the search box, and as it seems yet more incompatibilities. No wonder why it has lost most of its marker share.

 

So... Chrome or Firefox? Something else maybe?

 

Tried Chrome in the past but I don't like its UI, and I have to admit that I trust Google even less than Microsoft, as far as security and privacy are concerned (eg collection of data, history, tracking etc). Tried Firefox as well and I didn't like it either (way too cluttered UI, "heavy" application). Any suggestion?

 

EDIT: Btw, how do you restore text saved with the autosave feature?

Yes, I too noticed IP.Board and IE don't go very well together. The site cannot display the mobile version on IE 10 for Windows Phone, for example.

 

Restoring saved content is simple: click 'View Auto Saved Content (time)' and the site should display a box with the saved text. There is a button 'Restore Content' in that dialog box

So Microsoft has done arbitrary things with limited qualify assurance, again!!!

 

Can't people spell Firefox or Chrome?  Over the years, I've found that the quality of Microsoft's efforts are not strained.  In fact they usually have quite a few lumps that are missed by their people testing with the very latest hardware, some of which may not even be available to the pubic.

 

Think I'll stick to crowd-developed software.  It is usually better by several rows of Christmas trees.

Serious problems with Internet Explorer 11.

 

Has anyone tested the site with IE11/Win8.1? A big disappointment. Can't paste into the "Reply to this topic" box, dialogs (eg editing a URL) can't be closed, and there are quite a few other issues which I can't remember right now.

 

Are there any "recommended settings" or IE11 is simply "not supported"? Could anyone answer please?

 

The problem has been solved...FIREFOX.

I've used it exclusively for over ten years now and could not recommend any other. However I understand everyone has different opinions but...

The IP.Board autosave feature is handy, but have found it doesn't always update in real time.

 

As a second line of defence, a useful addon is Lazarus Form Recovery. For me it's come to the rescue on quite a few occasions when making posts.

 

It works by saving entered text to a local database file as you type, which can be restored from your browser's context menu. Most forms and editors are supported, and should anything go wrong with the web page or browser, the content will be safely preserved. The data is encrypted and a password can be added when attempting to restore forms. There are also options to search the database and control how long saved forms are kept for.

 

It's available for both Firefox and Chrome (personally only tried the FF one).

In the exchange section there are two lists on right side. Recent files and recent favourites. Everything's fine with the files section, but the favourites need a little tweak! (only a spacebar hit between version and name)

Just looked at the SC4 STEX.  I don't see either of these columns.  What I see are "Top Downloads" and "Top Authors".  Perhaps you are referencing another section?

 

Further checking shows this is in reference to the SC2013 section.

If I don't visit a thread for a while (I think about a week), ST unreads all the read posts in that thread and makes it as if I've never read the thread at all, even if I've posted in it. I believe this has been happening since the site scheme was overhauled.

Also turn off PHP error reporting or get it dumped in a log file that's not accessible through a front-end. This is actually a pretty serious security hole.

Grammatically speaking, "on" is an adverb in this case. These really shouldn't be pluralised (i.e. can't have an "s" at the end).

Last two or three days I have been getting a lot of 'DNS lookup', and 'Failure to connect' errors on the site. Also made a post in the stex and after several minutes it is still not showing up. Are others having these problems? IFor me it is only happening on Simtropolis and my ISP reports no problems.

I thought perhaps the site had been throttled down being the end of month and bandwith issues etc. (?)

Every page and every function is affected in too many ways to count.

 

This happens in all browsers (IE, Chrome, FF) after completely clearing the cache and even reinstalling them when applicable. I run Windows 7 x64 with all the latest updates and my system is NOT infected. If nobody else is reporting this condition, the symptoms suggest that my profile may be hosed. I'll happily provide my password and anything else you require to resolve this asap. Thank-you in advance.

DOS is what I thought it looked like from viewing the status page.  Glad to have my analysis confirmed and hope that everything has now been fixed up.  I notice that there is a bit of a delay switching between forums, and I suppose this is part of the fix.

Good thing it has been resolved relatively quickly. Depending on the severity these attacks can last much longer.

This kind of thing is done when insecure systems are used by the instigator to attack sites from user machines who may not even be aware that this is happening.  It shows why everyone who is a responsible user should make every effort to keep their machines clean of this kind of malware.  Essentially some stranger has taken over the machines.  The owner of the machine being used in this way may not even notice that he is missing a few cycles.
