5 pointsUpdate 36 Spring 1880 Nearly a week had passed since Stevens and his census crew had clanked into Porthaven on the new branch line. The last home was tallied yesterday, and it was time to move on. Stevens was busy checking out of the Inn when Mr. Delin and the sheriff rode up on horseback. “Good morning, gentlemen,” announced Stevens. “Unfortunately, Mr. Blankmair woods nae shaur 'at assessment,” quipped the Sheriff. Stevens gave a puzzled look. “It seems there was an altercation near the port last night, and Mr. Blankmore was shot dead,” said Delin. “The assailant was seen fleeing towards the ferry, which I understand is where you and your group are headed this morning,” he added. “Yes sir, we were just about to head over there now,” said Stevens. “The Sheriff is set to pursue the killer, and I’ve asked him to allow you to accompany him. I don’t feel right possibly sending our guests into harm’s way,” Delin explained. “We’ll heed 'at way as suin as ye an' yer colleagues ur ready,” announced the Sheriff. The old ferry landing was a mess of shacks and some old docks. The Sheriff spoke with a few of the inhabitants and learned that a man fitting the description of the accused murderer had taken the first ferry across the river this morning. Sheriff Vincent MacLachlan was aged beyond his years. Frontier life was hard, and Vincent had spent his adult life living on the edge of civilization. A full blooded scottsman, he came with his family to America during the Highland Potato Famine when he was a young boy. Life eventually landed him in Porthaven a few years back. He was a man of few words, but he earned the respect of the townsfolk through his actions. He kept the streets safe and the riffraff at bay. (Click for full size HD) Stevens drew a smile as his group of bean counters in their eastern fashions mingled about with Sheriff MacLachlan in his dusty worn coat and muddy boots. Still, as the unlikely group made its way across the river in the weathered ferry, Stevens felt at ease with the Sheriff among their party. “Ever since th' railroad started upgradin' th' port, lowlifes an' scumbags hae bin showin' up lookin' fur jobs an' causin' trooble.,” grumbled Sheriff MacLachlan as Stevens looked back towards the port. “Th' miscreant responsible fur Mr. Blankmore’s mudder is probably frae th' sam lot. nae tae worry… we’ll catch th' wee scunner,” he added. The ferry pulled into the docks on the other side of the river. A few houses and a shop or two hugged the road leading away from the shore. While the Sheriff went looking for a lead on his runaway, Stevens and crew took the time to add to their census tally. “Ye ur in luck, ay sorts,” chuckled the Sheriff. “Th' damned reprobate has gain an' skipped town… looks loch ye lads ur stuck wi' me fur a while longer.” “Your company is much appreciated, Mr. MacLachlan. We all thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality of Porthaven, and it saddens me to leave, but my spirits are lifted knowing we will be taking a bit of it with us on our journey,” laughed Stevens. The group saddled up and was on their way. Stevens checked off the little box in his journal, satisfied the census of Porthaven was complete. (Click for full size) The road led south, away from Porthaven, and it hadn’t changed much since Mr. Stevens trip through the SorGun region 10 years earlier. The rhythmic clap of horses’ hooves on the trampled dirt road was soothing to the ears, but rough on the rump. Stevens and his crew were already spoiled by the ease and comfort of travel by rail, but fortunately their first stop was nearly upon them. Pineford was nothing more than a blip on the map 10 years ago – and as Stevens crossed the rickety old bridge, he noticed that was about were things stood today. Main Street had filled in a bit, and where grass fields once flowed years earlier, houses and cabins now stood. “Someain haur will hae noticed uir mukker. I’ll need tae make some hoose calls, sae feel free tae do… whatever it is ye folks dae,” said the Sheriff. Stevens barked out orders, and the census crew got to work. As Fredric walked around in the dirt and mud, he quickly remembered trudging over the same streets a decade earlier. (animation) Towns this size could be covered quickly, and by now Stevens and his entourage were like a well-oiled machine. Each worker covered a few blocks, and within a couple hours Stevens had one more town to check off his list. (Click for full size) Not long after, MacLachlan rode back into town. “A farmer saw someain crossin' thoroogh his field puckle hoors ago headin' sooth,” said the Sheriff. “We're gettin' close,” he added, with a wink. As quickly as they came, the group was off again, wondering on down the dusty track. Giant cedar trees flanked the trail with not a sign of civilization in sight. It occurred to Stevens how easily one could disappear off the face of the earth out here. He began to wonder whether the Sheriff would be successful in his pursuit. If someone didn’t want to be found, this was the place to be. Then again, the isolation of the western territories could drive a man to insanity. After a while the group came to a small settlement hugging a fork in the trail. (Click for full size) A few house visits came up with no information regarding MacLachlan’s fugitive. “At way leids tae New Sorgin,” said the Sheriff, motioning towards the right fork. “An' thes heids up intae th' moontains, towards Foxton.” For a moment Stevens tried to imagine what way a criminal might choose, but who was he kidding – he knew less about criminals than quilting a four patch. “Hmmm,” grumbled the Scotsman. “Ah believe th' highlands ur callin' me haem.” And with that, MacLachlan nudged his horse and began trotting up the dusty trail. Credits: I’d like to thank all the folks who submitted a name for the Sheriff. Congrats to Blunder for his original submission – we now have a Scotsman in New SorGun. I will do my best to incorporate everyone’s ideas into the story, so keep an eye out to see if your character shows up down the road I’d also like to thank whoohoo.co.uk for their neat ‘Scottie Translator’ – it came in handy Replies to: Sheriff Wanted Gugu3, Luiz P. Romanini, Katherman111, bazoka, 111222333444, ggamgus, APSMS, and glad2meecha: -Thank you for the great submissions and comments. Don't be surprised if your characters find their way into the New SorGun tale in the future! infamousjbe: Bufford Grills' the name. Born suthern sie the plains. EDIT: I actually spent like 20 minutes writing a whole back story to my character until I re-read your request for the name and nothing else.. bummer. -I'm glad you submitted the story - it was a fun read! BTW, check one of the location names in this update Deaghaidh: Just wanted to say this is a great CJ. I was thinking of doing a late 1800s steampunk-flavored region myself, would you mind naming some of the custom content you're using? Finding period buildings is one thing, but how are you able to keep your roads car-free? What are you doing for electricity and water? Any advice you can give regarding building good timber and coal mining towns would be appreciated as well. You do such a great job of making real feeling small rural areas, something I'd love to copy. Also, am I correct in detecting some influence from Sons of the Profits, the excellent book on the timber and prostitution fueled rise of Seattle? Your CJ reminds me of it a great deal. For the Sheriff, I submit the name Billy O'Dea, Irish immigrant formerly working as private security for the NPRR, but who had a falling out with the local bosses. -Thanks for the great reply! You are indeed correct, the founding and evolution of Seattle has been a heavy influence on the development of this CJ, and Sons of the Profits has definitely been a helpful research tool. I'm actually shocked that you caught that - big time kudos! Snugies: 1880 so the intercontinental railroad has been completed. Will you go through the entire historical development of this region? I think electricity may come soon maybe 1890ish? start getting electric streetcars then trams and elevated rail etc. then car later. Then we could see like before and after photo's. Looks really good, good job. -New SorGun is on the edge of the American frontier, in the secluded pacific northwest - so it will be some time before electricity reaches these folks. But it will happen in due time Schulmanator: Gotta be Andy Griffith Sr... Deputy Barney Fife, Sr. What could be better? If it was an English town I'd suggest Sheriff Nottingham. -That's funny - you aren't the only person to go the Andy Griffith route (Krashspeed from SimPeg had the same idea) NMUSpidey: "China" Rad Coffinson, because when Rad drops you, you break like fine china. Hm. He might make an even better bandit, now that I think about it. Or better yet, a bandit turned sheriff! Who better to be a scourge of the underworld than a man who was once a major part of it! Of course, he only turned 'good' because the money was 'good,' too, and the way the railways went about the whole property grab thing, we're not talking about a bunch of people who are real high on ethics. Unless of course, I'm thinking of a different town. Then you can ignore this completely EDIT: they had china in the States in the 1880s, right? -Great submission - "China" may pop into the story down the road - but the Scotsman won the Sheriff job this time. And yes, the Chinese were definitely part of the western population at this point - they provided much of the manpower for the railroads. Don't be surprised if that story find's it's way into the New SorGun narrative soon.

Turning on the news... A massive supercell storm has formed outside the Great Coast, and is quickly approaching. Now for those who don't know, this storm isn't like any other storm... We're talking crazy lightning strikes in whole areas, Hurricane-force winds, tornadoes, floods, even hail... Highly populated areas are being evacuated as the storm nears, but time is running out... Ah these storms are nothing, my city's at 980,000! I'm going to hit 1 million this afternoon! Mayor Brown, you don't understand how powerful these storms are... ...This region was hit once way back then, but my city (Coastland Metropolis) only got rain, and wind. The worst of the storm hit a nearby town (220K population, don't remember the name) and...let's just say, we needed to rewrite the maps afterwards... to accommodate for a city that was "wiped" off the face of the Earth... This is a super-storm...I call it a hyper storm. This was before your city (Ashville Metropolis) was built... Damn, is this one of those storms? Yep... But it's such a beautiful day right now, look! The sun is out... (1:42 PM) Ashville Metropolis You're just bluffing... Well alright, but I'll talk to you later... Alright simtropolians, let's see if our citizens are preparing...I don't know what Brown is doing with his city, but I for one don't want loss of life here, so I'm sending out evacuations... We're going to the radio station... Sound the alarm! (1:28 PM) (Pic of radio station, on top of CN Tower) (tornado alarm sounds) Perfect... _________________________ 4:52 PM The storm is now bearing down, a beautiful summer afternoon is now turning into an ominous dark stormy day... Evacuations continue, as cars backup on Interstate 35 (4:55 PM) Coastland metropolis highway backed up) Man I wish I could've expanded those highways earlier! Ah well, we'll just have to make with what we got. Let's go to higher ground... (4:57 PM) 15th (Street going upwards) Most people who stayed (a lot of them) are inside the house, ready to ride out the storm...This is going to be crazy...With these storms, it can be a beautiful day one moment, and a few MINUTES later, a dark stormy disaster-about-to-happen type weather...Oh snap here it comes! Play this video for maximum immersion! http://youtu.be/wqPAAwR_32M (5:01 PM) Coastal Metropolis Beach, GC The storm is now beginning to come over the coast, people on the beach stop and stare for a moment at the massive clouds and run away in panic as the wind picks up, from calm afternoon breeze to nearly 60 mph in seconds! Umbrellas blow away and sand burns skins as it is picked up from sudden wind... people race to the nearby buildings to avoid the floods... _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Coastland Metropolis... (5:12 PM) Oh man that's massive... (5:14 PM) Highlands Town (East of Coastal Metropolis, and The Tech city, and West of Ashville Metropolis) 5:35 PM The storm is now in full swing, sustained winds of up to 60 mph, with gusts up to 100 mph... (6:12 PM) Small airplane escaping massive tornado just outside of Coastland Metropolis, north of the city... That thing's headed east... (Mayor of Highlands metropolis calling on phone) *picks up phone* Hello? Mayor Green! Did you see that massive tornado? Yeah, where's it going? I think it's headed for Ashville metropolis...Oh no the power went ou- (call lost) Shoot, I gotta call Mayor Brown! (dials, ringtone) Hello? Mayor Brown! This is Jack! Oh hey Jack, man this weather sucks! Those clouds are scary! (6:15 PM) Ashville Coast flooded by massive waves Mayor Brown! You gotta get the hell out of your mansion! There are massive tornadoes moving your direction! I ain't going NOWHERE! I'm staying here! I'm at 984,000 and I'm about to hit 1,000,000 people! ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR (EXPLETIVE)**KING LOVING MIND! FORGET ABOUT YOUR STUPID POPULATION GOAL, IS THIS REALLY WORTH YOUR LIFE? The captian goes down with his city, and so the mayor goes down with his city! (loud noise in background) Fine! BE IT! 3 points@ROFLyoshi: not a bad view at all! @Mark, looks like a beautiful day out for cycling! Thanks EB Here's a couple more lightning shots of mine, and IMHO my best yet. When I was a kid I dreamed of being a storm chaser, and I sort of relived that fantasy in these photos. Who knows, I could end up doing this professionally one day... For now, though:

2 pointsReplies @ Ace♥ & Huston: Thankyou both I have a nice mosaic ready today. It is from the Penzance region, and for the next update I should have some development pictures. Click the images for full resolution This CJ will be slightly roadgeeky, I can't resist.. And the mosaic... Click the link below for the full mosaic. Click me for full mosaic! I am lacking in custom buildings for the Penzance region and the Cape York region at the moment, that's because I've just made a new plugins folder specifically for these regions. I'll get some more eventually Thanks, Sam.

2 pointsEA may be looking at the possibility of adding offline play and other features to SimCity as part of its future updates for its world-building series, according to a customer survey that has surfaced on Reddit. The survey (screenshots) seeks player feedback on potential upcoming features. These include: farms, faster rebuilding after disasters, over and underpass roads, cities twice the size of current land plots, terraforming, cooperative city building with friends, and Classic mode. The latter is described as allowing players to, “In offline or online mode, play a single, fully functioning city using cheats and unlocks that allow you to create your perfect city.” - Full article.

2 pointsIndeed, it is time... When is a BAT finished, despite having no roof? Perhaps when it is partly underground, such as with those last few pictures? Figure it out for yourself and enjoy. Keep in mind I still need to touch up the glass and reflections.

2 pointsAs mentioned by someone on SC4D..those yellow roofs aren't doing it for me..to me it still feels to dirty and the texture/material seems too blury..compared to the crispness of the BoNY, it almost looks a little 'Gmaxy'..also not too sure about the glass/windows? It doesn't feel like it represents glass.. Maybe i'm just seeing things or being overly picky, or both as nobody else seems in agreeance

2 pointsJust a small update on what I have been working on with this project for the last week. The features that are implemented are as follows: Setup multiple plugin folders for ease of maintenance Automatic installation of zip and rar plugin archives into the desired plugin folder. Enter and update information for plugins for easy identification Uninstall a specific plugin from a folder Remove non-plugin files (like images, empty folders, read-me files etc.) for a folder. Configure command line switches through a graphical interface (like. -intro:off, -customresolution:enabled etc) Auto-save game while playing Automatic updating plugin information from a central server (can be disabled if desired) Scan for file changes and new files (useful when you install sc4buddy after you have installed your plugins) - app will automatically identify plugins that are known to the central server (can be disabled) What is on the drawing board: Check for missing dependencies for plugins known to the central server install multi-volume plugin archives (i.e. awesomePlugin.part1.rar, awesomePlugin.part2.rar) Automatic user folder backup New version notifications Plugin conflict detection Install region feature Automatic dependency/new version download (see below) Author console Let plugin authors add plugin information to the central server Authors can upload their plugins so they can be downloaded when they are identified as a dependency for a user Authors can upload a new version of their plugins so users can automatically update their plugins If all goes well I will release an early alpha version sometime next week!! If any custom content creators want to participate or help me with adding the information to the database, please PM me so I can give you access to the author console once it is done (got a crude version now so it will have to be refined a bit) Techy info: For now I've decided that a "dependency" is an entire plugin. So if a plugin is dependent on a specific file, you will have to install the entire plugin (but you can however remove the files you don't need manually if that's required, as long as the record is still in the applications database - meaning you do not uninstall it through the tool but through the file explorer)

1 pointHi, My name is Criss... Ive been a member of simtropolis since 2006 I believe... not importante right now... Since I got the game... back in 2004... there has been always a challenge for me, which it was (and still is) to recreate a real life city. Now the problem with that as we all know is the lack of bats, mods, game limitations... etc... but even though we have that, there were some people who challenged those limitations and created the most wonderful recreations... and they have been an inspiration to me throughout the years.. To name some examples... Paris by E.J.C... which I cant find anymore... San Francisco... by mexicanboy... back in 2005!! the different looks of NYC... by one of my greatest inspirations... lucky7... wow... you should all check that one out... and so on... Now, I have been playing this region for about 1 month... It takes a lot of time to get streets right... and at the same time obtain functionality out of it... this CJ is not about looks only, but to make it function like the real NYC.. .so mass transit... WILL BE ESSENTIAL.. I dont have too many pics yet... but since I made you read all of this long post.. I'll give you something so that you dont hate me... =) But first... lets get technical: 1) Map: Izidor44... I edited the config so I could fit the post office 2) Streets: placed as accurate as possible Wish: to inspire people to create something different... and to start something different... to be honest... I havent seen a real life rec for a long time now... I like the current cjs... but I dont know.. .maybe by this I will inspire some more recreations... oh, and also, maybe with this, I will help people create their own version of NYC.. .after all.. Im open to questions.. .and if necessary, I will make a tutorial of things you want to know... =) PICS!!! Midtown... Region view... Transportation... Please comment and rate... Our Journal begins here... =)

1 pointReplies: Sunr: Thanks, though this is a vanilla CJ so I don't use mods in it I'm afraid. Magneto: Thanks, hope you continue to pop in and enjoy the CJ. Entry 36: Rubic Incident: Nearing A Verdict Well its with great relief that I can say that Earth has accepted us rudely barging into existence like this and the quarantine is soon to be removed. Apparently they're just finishing off final issues regarding our rights as a independent country and the question of whether we own any land as a nation, but other than that, its all good. In light of this, an emphasis has returned to continuing the Tantico Harbour Redevelopment Program. As such this is what this entry focuses on. What is probably the largest reclamation so far in the redevelopment this area has given the cramped harbour some more breathing space and brought more larger but cleaner factories into the harbour. As with stage two I'm showing a four stage time lapse of the redevelopment starting with showing the area to be redeveloped. Moving the old grungy businesses out we began filling in the water around the old shoreline, ending up with this, much larger area to work with. Next up was the roads and parks. Funded by the Tensea Power Distribution company the small Tensea Green, can be seen here just before construction started on the surrounding factories. Finally after a while the area was complete, larger cleaner factories having replaced the old dirty ones and empty spaces filled in with more parks in the hope of reducing the air and water pollution, the old industry created. Finally for this update, here's a look at the redevelopment of the harbour so far, with the first three stages complete. That's all for now though. Hopefully next time I'll be able to bring the update from a free and independent island nation, preparing its first steps into a new world. Till then Jamie Felding

1 pointI too have a story to share... When I registered on SimTropolis back, I still was one of the members in the crowd. A nobody. Still connected with a data cap of 250MB a month, so I was cautious with downloads, didn't use things like cloud servers and YouTube. Now, I have no data caps and I have kind of a prominent role within the community, something I didn't expect to happen back in 2007. People I've looked up to in the past are now my fellow NAM Team mates and I've been a mod for a year now, making my presence more prominent (but I also have to be more responsible). What's more interesting is that also that SimTropolis/SC4Devotion and Real Life have crossed at some points. For instance, SimCity did play a role in my choice for my university study, which I'm happy to note that I've almost succesfully finished the bachelor degree. Furthermore, I've been to Dutch Day 2012 and 2013 of SC4D, meeting other dutch SC4D members in Real Life... But the greatest endavour took place this year. In the start of this year, Felix (riiga) and I got this crazy idea to meet up one day. He wanted to visit the Netherlands some day. I offered him a place to stay. Knowing him longer, I trusted him to come. So by the end of April, it was finally realised and it was a fun meet-up during the weekend. It went by all to quickly.... But soon after the meet-up there was the idea of doing it in reverse; I was planning to visit his place in Sweden during the summer. Furthermore, that would also be the first time on a plane for me. That's a double endavour for me then. After some planning, we managed to pick a week. And right now, I'm enjoying the stay at his place and we just visited Stockholm today. I have no regrets of doing it And that's all because of SimTropolis and SC4Devotion. Without those sites, we would've never met each other... Best, Maarten

1 pointThis boutique, along with the walls, will be released within the next few days. I will be quite busy helping a friend pack for their trip, as well as figuring out the logistics of mine, so I won't be on much for the next three, as I'll be on the phone or "throwing" peoples' suitcases.

1 pointYou should rather have a full coverage (with all educational facilities, for all wealth classes), if you are for big CO development, Putting a library in an area where it sees little usage, isn't really "inefficient" economically, because you can reduce funding and still have a high-quality service. Strangely enough, if your library has just a little more books than those checked out, the QoS doesn't drop! And it costs just pennies. It's good to have libraries throughout your R areas, and if usage is low early on, it may rise as your sims mature. Placement of those civic buildings, schools, libraries, and esp police and fire stations is one of the biggest challenges imo. I have noticed taht for all educational facilities, the starting age (in the "School Effectiveness vs. Average Age" property) is always 20 and the biggest one 80. The 0 and 100 ages are missing. Maybe, if the effect for the age of 20 is zero, the facility has no effect for the ages less than 20, while if it's nonzero it affects ages less than 20 as well. For example, check the settings for the elementary and high schools. Libraries start with an effectiveness of 30 for the age of 20 (and to 0 as well?) and end up with 20 for the age of 80 (or to even 100?). That is, what happens with the ages <20 and >80 is a question. There are some few "consolidated" (elementary+high) schools, for students of both age groups (their "Effectiveness" curve is a combination of both). I use them extensively in my cities, so placing educational facilities becomes less of a headache.I have a question: do you think that these are somehow "cheaty" (of course provided that all other parameters, like plop cost, maintenance cost per student etc, are in line with the Maxis ones)? I have made some test before using them, and found that the attendance of the combined school equals to the sum of the ones for the individual schools. Another dark point to me is the private schools. I have noticed that if you have an all-R$$$ area, and a private plus a public (consolidated) school, completely covering the above area, attendance for both schools is exactly the same. This may mean two things: either your sims attend both schools (getting additional education boost), or they prefer the private school (has a higher EQ boost) but still "utilize" the public school, thus wasting you money (this means that you could bulldoze the public school without any consequences). I think both cases are unacceptable. Didn't test to see what happens if the private school reaches capacity. Any insight?

1 pointI Think NMUSpidey once said they dont teach much history in Japanese schools, it may be best to just let it lie.

1 pointI gave up on public transportation I just can't seem to get the silly sims to use it. I can get maybe 5k on the buses. The bus and street car conga lines play havoc with my designs and create more congestion. I have yet to find a solution. The segregation concept some people use just doesn't seem to want to work for me.
-
1 pointI've had reasonable success basing off a design I found on YouTube from HalbyStarcraft. I think this was before the traffic 'fix' they did a while back (now cars will take longer routes, so even side-streets get traffic), but it still seems to work okay with zero mass transit up to 300K or so. Lots of traffic, but people can get where they need to go in time (give or take happy shopper exodus spam). With working mass transit you should be able to push it a lot higher.

1 pointFor Russian Speaking Romantic moment, please listen to this song. For Sad feel moment, please listen to this song. "In the news today, Kartobian weather is rainy today. We advise to take an umbrella with you, if you planning to go outside. The Kamchatkan Virus is being found around Kartoba city, many citizens have came to St.Augustus Hospital for help. Lines... As week passed, we met again with her. We exchanged the ever slight understanding of our feelings. I ordered my driver, to get us and go to Oxygenol. A club owned by Oshi and me. The rain has swept away, the sounds of the city. I missed calls after calls, all my time was consumed by the Kamchatkan. While we driven trow the streets. At Oxygenol, we sat for 2 hours, mostly just drinking and talking. A man was coughing all the time, I even asked to given a new place. As the night continued, she said that she needs to leave. I proposed that my driven takes her, but she replied that her friend will meet her. We arranged to meet tomorrow. at the evening. I watched her leaving. The rain continued, I returned to my apartment. Watched the missed calls. Oshi called me 7 times. Re-called him. He asked me to come to his apartment. As I found out, Oshi was attacked by some girl that he invited back. His hand was bitten. But he refused to go to the doctor. This cases start happening around the city, with many suspecting drugs. I purseud to make Oshi to go to the doctor. I could not imagine how the later day will change. Waking up at the morning, I was woken up by her call, she tolled me to turn on the tv. The news kept running, as the sound of helicopters and plane bound for Kartobian International St.George Airport were made. I saw Cattalian-Hijaran planes. After 10 minutes, cell phones were turned off. Internet connection lost and only tv kept going. As I continued watching, the emergency broadcast was turned on. Hoped you liked the update, next will posted soon. If you liked put stars or comment ))) Constantin.

1 pointAnd a different set of mores, a different culture from the US. The cradle of labour unions should be ashamed of the abuses in the US.

1 pointMy latest map....still a WIP. It's the city of Bravil (my Cities in Motion 2 map), so it ties in with this other regional map (which I had posted before, but here it's updated!): I know Bloodmayne station is there twice -- it's just S-Bahn Bravil is operated by a different company that named its stops on its own, and the S-Bahn station for Bloodmayne is 200 meters off the main "real" Bloodmayne station.
