Hello!

I've been following this site on/off for probably a decade. I just re-downloaded SimCity 4, and decided to donate to get the STEX collections. It seems to suggest I should get a link emailed to me pretty immediately - I haven't seen that yet.

Who could I contact for assistance with that?

Hi @axolotl8 and welcome to Simtropolis. *:8)

Thanks for your generous donation to support the site. We hope you enjoy the Collection discs and all the custom content to enhance SC4's potential. There is so much excellent content still being created on the STEX and LEX, and it becomes a library of choice for expanding on the game's solid foundations.

Hello citybuilders!

I noticed this site around 7 years ago, when I searched for SimCity 4 mods for the first time.
While I played many city-building games over the last years, I never really shared what I created, and I never created mods myself.
Maybe that should change?

I like creating new places and explore them. However my city-building still lacks some details. Currently I want to create a "city-journal" combining Cities Skylines, Workers and Resources and Kerbal Space Program. Maybe creating a story while building which combines these three games.

Also a big THANK YOU for all the mods I downloaded ...  Your work massively extended the possibilities of city-building games. (Somehow I suffer from overloading my games with too many brilliant mods ...)

Hi @Dreamcitybuilder and welcome to Simtropolis. *:8)

It sounds great for what you have in mind, and do feel free to share any of your city-building custom content creations too. The creative aspects of both the games itself are enhanced by modding in many shapes and sizes. In this way it becomes quite the game within the game in many respects.

We hope you enjoy the site and community here.

New to this site! I have recently started playing SC4 again after many years away. mI'm loving it. There are some terminology inhere though I have no Idea about. This like dependencies - are these files that need to be downloaded first? Don't wanna be annoying but am keen to learn but must admit my tech language/skill is limited

Hi @naughtynathanael and welcome to Simtropolis and back to SC4! *:8)

Yes, that's correct for the basis of what dependencies are. Dependencies are extra files (commonly props and textures) which custom lots require in order to display and function properly in game. Otherwise one will see either missing details in game, or brown boxes in place of buildings.

Basically a brown box is what Maxis added to show whenever something major is missing.

And by the way..

No worries, since it's never annoying to ask questions about the game and anything technical. Feel free to ask more in new or existing topics, and there are many helpful people here in the community who'll be glad to assist on your mayoral journey. *:)

Hello and Welcome. Dependencies are needed for custom files. Let's say somebody made a building and added a tree or fire hydrant. You'd need those dependencies for that tree or fire hydrant to appear.

Thanks for that! I play on Mac (seems to add a challenge). I have successfully down loaded the NAM and been able to set the TSCT to my settings. I have down loaded a couple of mods successfully - now i have managed to sign into SimCty devotion and am going to attempt a mod with dependencies.

Hiya, @naughtynathanael. Welcome to Simtropolis. *:)

For the extra challenge of playing SC4 on a Mac, I'll just mention something you prolly already know: There is a limit to the number of files the Mac version can load from plugins and the workaround for that is DatPacking. Should this be unfamiliar territory, we can dig up some linkys about it. (I don't have a Mac myself, but I do recall this is one of the more pressing issues which have been discussed here on ST.)

Hello!

I'm not really a new member, but it's been so long that I might as well be. I bought SimCity 4 in 2003, and played it for several years, building cities, regions, filling up my tiny (at that time large) hard drive with content. Then at some point I lost the CD case. When I replaced my computer, I realized, too late, that I didn't have the CD key anywhere. So I was very excited when SimCity (5) was released... then so incredibly disappointed. After creating so much open content, I was stuck in a tiny sandbox! So I gave up and played other games.

But SimCity 4 kept pulling at me through the years. I had made a couple of attempts to contact EA support to see if I could recover my initial registration, but got nowhere. I didn't want to re-buy the game when I had already paid $60 for it (and was still rather peeved that I had wasted $60 on the sequel... kind of like Alien 3). Finally, last week, the game pulled at me again, and I finally managed to get a one-on-one chat with an EA support agent, who confirmed that they did not have my original 2003 registration info.

Then yesterday, Steam put the game on sale for 75% off! I'm finally back!

But it's been so long that I've forgotten everything I knew about mapping. So I've poked around the forums here, and I think I've found what I need to get started. Time to open my large collection of DEM files...

Hi @geobeck and welcome to Simtropolis. *:8)

SC4 sure has a habit of that, and I think it's due to being limitless canvas of creativity. It's great you've managed to pick the game up again digitally now, and especially while it was at the discounted price there. We look forward to seeing whatever you wish to share with us for your mapping explorations!

Hey, I'm Addemup.

When I was a lot younger, I got a physical copy of SC4 for my birthday. Sadly I don't have it any more, but partially out of nostalgia and partially because I never got very far when I played it originally I rebought it on Steam a couple years back. It's mostly been sitting in my library since (kinda like my account here), but today I figured I would finally try and make that city of my dreams I had when I was little. So, here I am.

As of late I've been starting work on the London region, building Kensington up to about 15,000. I haven't built any cities aside from the two that were there by default, but I plan on changing that pretty soon - right after I try fixing up Fulham. I'm not even sure if it's a good idea to build any residential there.

I have a variety of other interests, including (but by no means limited to) music, cartoons (both kinds) and history. This seems like a nice place, and I'm looking forward to seeing what wacky things you guys have come up with and reading up on city-building strategy.

Hi @Addemup and welcome to Simtropolis and the forums. I'm CB! *:thumb:

Even for being a member for a few years now it's never too late to get that 1st post out of the way.

In returning to SC4 that sounds a good plan. It might be worth exploring to play for a while however you'd like, and see what's worth building. Then in time, look into custom content for what's worth installing for mods and BATs etc, which open up whole new worlds of possibility.

Feel free to post in any existing or new topics for anything as a community we can you assist with.
