First SC4 running on Windows XP imply that you cannot install 4GB Patch and therefore you cannot run NAM installation with RHW Controller (FULL NAM Controller - RHW).

So you will have to install either NAM Lite or NAM Full (NAM Full Controller - NO RHW).

i can upgrade the version of windows or simply install a new VM for using SC4

also assuming it can go up to windows 7 no prob what would be max version for that and could i apply 4gb patch then?

The 4GB Patch is constrained by RAM memory. If your computer has Memory greater than or ugueal to 8GB RAM then you can install the 4GB Patch and consequently install NAM with RHW

If the RAM is 4GB then you must first upgrade the RAM to get at least 8GB RAM and consequently install NAM with RHW. If you cannot do the RAM upgrade then you cannot install the 4GB Patch and consequently NAM with RHW

Running SC4 on a virtual machine is unrecommended as all performance is degraded and as a result you will have a lousy gaming experience.

Also if you are using the SC4 DVD version you must asure to delete Windows Update which goes to strip DRM that SC4's disk needs to work. Using NO CD versions of SC4 is not recommended as they do not contain the official Maxis patches in addition to activating the antivirus mechanism with the 4GB Patch

clearly doing all this Vm stuff is not working so IG ill tell you why i need this in the first place:

basicly my SC4 installtion only includes a few folders and the icon it doesnt even have a .EXE file to run and the issue is steam wont restore ALL the files just a small portion of them

the issue with this is once i run the game and open a city it just closes the program making it quite litteraly unplayable

if you could tell me how to fix this that would be great as it would be really nice to not have to deal with the lag of a VM combined with all the setup every time i want to play a new version

Let me get this straight. You are using the Steam version of SC4 on a virtual machine but are having problems running SC4 with NAM because the game crashes when you load a city?

First, I would advise against running SC4 on a virtual machine as virtual machines take too long to transfer all the data resulting in performance loss and data corruption. Then your problem is solved by applying the 4GB Patch but is still constrained by the amount of RAM your computer has

My advice is to buy a new computer also because Steam no longer supports Windows 7, Vista and XP

I get the error with or without sudo

@FixxerAuto I can't address your operating system problem but I would like to point out that this .jar file is only a test file.

Yeah, good point. I was trying to run "sudo java -jar NetworkAddonMod_Setup_Version47.jar" The resulting error looks the same as what you had with this test file. There must be something that the installer does more than just copying folders to the plugins folder. If i could figure that out, i could manually modify, copy, or replace files needed to make this work in Ubuntu. Basically manually do everything that the installer does. Not sure where to begin with that one though... I have a dual boot system and have it working on my Windows 10 partition, but it is just a pain to reboot every time i want to play SC4 and then reboot again every time i want to go back to my main OS.

@FixxerAuto I spent many hours going over the java code included in the jar file but could not nail down the offending bits.

It basically sets a file path, collects your selections and moves files accordingly.

If you really want to install manually there are directions in the  'read-first-NAM-47.html'  included in the .jar file. Scroll way down and look for the heading  'Manual Installation'.
All the files you need are in the "Installation' folder in the .jar file. (I have not tried this)

I am currently working on some code that will work on Ubuntu/Linux but it will take some time.

Hi and welcome. This sounds like you might have the wrong NAM Controller file or it is missing altogether. Which pieces are you unable to place? If it only affects the RHW pieces, you have the low-RAM version of the NAM Controller installed which lacks RHW functionality.

You can check the version of the installed NAM Controller by scrolling to the bottom of the highway menu.

If that does not help, then as @Handyman explained, you can do a manual installation following the steps in the readme.

Alternatively, you could build your own installer by taking the empty-installer-version47.0.1.jar file I attached earlier. Open it as a zip file and replace the "installation" folder by the "installation" folder from the NAM 47 installer. It's not empty anymore then, but contains all the installable NAM files. You can then run it as a runnable jar file. (If necessary, extract the jar files as zip, replace the installation folder and reassemble a modified jar file as zip.)

This issue is also going to be fixed in the upcoming NAM 48 release.

If you can launch the game, the .exe file is definitely present. Be sure to look in the correct folder.

I had this little experiment around, made with NAM47. After installing NAM48, the starter pieces for the dragable pedmalls were gone (note the empty tiles) and the neighbourhood lost car connection. A new starter piece dragged around solved the issue.

The other little pedestrian neighbourhood in the same region also went 100% car-free...

Has anyone experienced this issue too?

We have made structural changes in the Pedmalls because of the subsequent changes we will make. No problems should arise but if there are you have to rebuild the pedmalls and related connections to restore pedmall behavior

Thanks Handyman! I was able to get it running thanks to you pointing out the manual install section of the read-firstNAM-47.html file. I foud the problem when comparing the folders of my install against the jar file. I found that the 1 core  and 0 NAM Controller directories were missing many files and, of the 2 dat files that were in the directories, they were 0 bytes in size. So my problem was an error while copying the directories from windows. I am very happy as now i can play SC4 without having to reboot into Windows each time! *:D I believe that the copy method is a valid way to install this as long as everything gets copied... lol

THanks again!

@FixxerAuto Glad I could help, though I downloaded NAM 48 the other day and gave it a try.
Thankfully it worked without requiring sudo,  this will eliminate the need for a Linux replacement.
My current OS is Ubuntu 22.04 and I am currently interviewing Debian and Mint, as possible replacements, so I tried it out on all three.
It ran successfully on all systems, each with a different version of java.
There was a minor restriction on Debian. See below.

Ubuntu 22.04:

openjdk version "1.8.0_392"

After setting the execute bit, I was able to double click the .jar file to open the Installer.

After setting the execute bit of the .sh file, I was able to right click it and select Run as Program.

Debian 12:

openjdk version "17.0.9" 2023-10-17

I was not able to get the double click working on the .jar file.

After setting the execute bit of the .sh file, I was able to right click it and select Run as Program.

Mint/Cinnamon 21.3:

openjdk version "11.0.21" 2023-10-17

After setting the execute bit, I was able to double click the .jar file to open the Installer.

After setting the execute bit of the .sh file, I was able to double click it and select Run or Run in Terminal.

All systems ran the .jar file when invoked from the command line.

In every case, when the Installer opens, I cannot see the checkbox at the bottom of the page so I just go fullscreen to access it.

If I could ask for one thing it would be to expand the first nodes in the jtree by default.

@harryloko20 thanks for dropping by and asking!

At this moment, there's no multi-lane diagonal ramps for the RealHighway, nor ongoing development for them. It's definitely something that interests some team members, but we currently
have more urgent content to create or expand first.

If you want a double lane ramp like that, I'd suggest doing it on the ortho stretch before you curve to diagonal.

Here's an example of such a design

So, what's the magic trick to progressing past the first page of the install? Could not reach the "I agree" button in all resolutions and screen sizes.

Maybe next time, a scroll bar, less flamboyancy with the break spaces, use of bold or italic font instead of breaks...etc.

Guess I wont be installing this version.

I don't know what screen do you use in what resolution, but you can expand the box in any direction by dragging the edges of the box.

Nope. The first thing I tried. 1366x768 with 2 different screens.

I changed the resolution on my monitor to the same and I still have the "agree" box without changing anything...

EDIT: I got the same result as you on 800*600 resolution, but I still got the "agree" box, when I changed it to 1024x768 or everything above. So I don't know...

So I uploaded past versions, V45, V46, and V47(I'm still on 42), and opened the installers. All allowed me to reach the "I agree" button. 46 had to be opened full screen, but that was the only problem. All had far fewer breaks too. I'd offer you pics, but, currently, I can't upload images to my attachments even though all I have in it is a couple M's of files and CB is no where to be found, Imgur is effed because some idiot redesigned it and I can't upload there either now, and I just started an account at a new file hoster and absolutely nothing works there. Because, when it rains, it pours.....

Maybe put the button on the top from now on. Then you can write War and Peace or whatever(nobody reads it anyway) below it.

That's not the problem. I have tons of room(almost 999M) but I keep getting that You've exceeded your 2M limit(supposed to be 4 btw) every time I try to up a pic. This has been happening every time the forum gets updated(about 3 or 4 days ago). And CB is supposedly the only one that can fix it.

Tonight had a real look at the new NAM ! Speialy the RHW section I noticed the abscence of the heigh transition section ? There´s some prefab quick changes but not the seciton with on slope, transitions RH2 RH5 RH6 ? Some time ago someone mentioned that their be fractional angle singletrek rail or a plopable  version, I see a starter under fractional angle for str but plopping results in double track ? Straight forward installed it without any changes. Will retry it and a previous version to see the difference. What am I missing !

Noticed that old RHW are deprecated pieces as weill the connectors not standard installed only the 7.5 RHW2 missing ? why FLEX for easy Ok searched for flex slope transitions or by dragging no result so without else I prefer old !

Sincerely yours,

Kschmidt

What I can understand, you may need to convert some rails to STR and pass that to the starter. Doing FA on rails is pretty hard. That's why I don't have any.

HT is indeed deprecated. You need to install it manually with the installer, last time I checked. If there's no option, I think @Ulisse Wolf or @Tarkus has removed it.

QCs don't support on slope construction if I'm not mistaken. It doesn't mean you can't really build it on slope. It just, you need a lot of manual works.

Docs on sc4nam.com should help you. If not, feel free to watch MGB's or Ulisse's video on YouTube. Search for "SimCity 4 NAM highway tutorial."

That's what I can understand. Even as a non-native speaker, it's pretty hard to interpret. By the way, hope it really helps. Thanks!

Both the height Transisitions and the on-slope pieces are in the RHW FLEX-HT menu location. The pieces are FLEXed, so you can place them and then drag the desired network to them. They will then convert to the intended RHW route.**

     RHW FLEX-HT.jpg

The deprecated pieces (HT, WT, and NC) are still available but the menu buttons need to be selected during installation. They are not selected by default.

**Edit: I don't remember exactly why, but I believe the RHW2 capability was removed from the FLEX pieces due to a conflict with another feature. However, you can use a starter piece that will raise the route and connect to the height and onslope pieces.
