My largest city is at 506,000. It's part of a region that has around 2.5 million Sims. I always start out small, with low density until I hit around 5-10,000 and then I up it to medium until I have around 20,000 Sims, then I go for high density, always paying attention to demand. I play slowly and deliberately, not ever going for population but rather, quality of life. I pay special attention to my schools and when the population of each school gets to around 50 % of cap I build another school. The same goes for hospitals. I build tons of libraries as well. Education is as important to me in real life as it is for my Sims, so I make sure they are educated and well cared for. I also like to build a central park area, with plazas, parks and recreation, in addition to adding trees and parks in hard to use spaces.

One problem I have with my big cities is slow growth at times. In these cases, I start a small area away from the city center, building medium and low density housing, industry and commercial, and connecting it to the bigger portion when it has grown a bit. This seems to kick start demand and make growth happen more quickly. I think the key, at least for me, is to build slowly and not think so much about population, but more about quality of life instead. I know this isn't going to work for everyone, but it works for me.

Currently: approx. 30k. And I possibly won't continue a city tile after it reaches 200-300k, I'll move the development to an adjacent city tile and merge them to form a city. And don't forget, Region = Large City/Metro Area, City Tile = Small City/Town/Part of a large city

Back when i was 9 i created a city without any mods named "Metropolis" I built that city to about 500,000 people using no cheats. A year later i accidentally deleted the region it was in so i created a new one. Using the same city name i made a better city with a population around 800,000 people. Using no cheats. *Ok i did use howdryiam*

Still this one, I guess:

Not that I care for it much, as it is a test city. Nearly a quarter of the area is still unused. There's no subway and limited public transport (trains and bus).

My 3 highest populations for a city are Radiator Springs (2.1 million), Autumn (1.4 Million), and Sunny Coola, (862,000). All of these used no demand mods

My 3 highest populations for a city tile are Downtown Radiator Springs (982,000), Downtown Sunny Coola (433,000), and Downtown Cisco (421,000). All but Cisco used no demand mods

My 3 highest populations for a Metro. Area/Region are Radiator Springs/Sunny Coola (4.3 Million), Autumn (2.3 Million), and Portland (2.1 Million). All but Portland used no demand mods.

All of these were made in 2011, with the exception of Cisco (Early 2012) and Portland (Mid 2012-Early 2013)

With all of the cities I've made, I've got lots of practice to make big cities, though now all of my Post-2011/Post-Cisco cities (including Portland) arent as big since now I only like to make high dense downtowns with low dense sprawling suburbs, which is where most of my modern region populations come from. And a tip, the middle class are easier to manage than lower and upper class, and in my opinion, look nicer than the upper class. If it wasnt for most of my Post-2011 cities being almost all middle class (literally) they would've never got that big, Radiator Springs region peaked at 4.9 million, but dropped because the upper class got too hard to manage and the lower class was moving in too fast...

This is my largest city. It has like 1000+ schools and hospitals... And now it has become so slow it is unplayable...

The highways to the south are carrying around 500k+ workers and the subways are at maxium capacity, carrying many million workers.

The highest population i had for  a single city (large city tile) was around 440k with a region of about 3.6 million, that was years ago, i was never able to recreate anything like it.

At the moment my highest population is 530.000, I've reached 1,1 million once but that city got lost. I'm not really aiming to get a higher population at the moment, I'm going for a slow population-development.

I would love a picture if you had one. :)

Ask and ye shall recieve. To be honest a lot of it is aesthetically crap, but this is the only region I have worked on for the past 3-4 years so it shows a progression of my simcity skills, if you want to call them that.

clicky for full size.

About 1.5 million, but I cheated and there's many bugs thanks to the eternal commuter loop.

Eternal Commuters can be fixed easily be remving the offending connections. ID them using the Route Query Tool, and simply delete the neighbor connection. Make sure to play all the tiles a few times on cheetah speed, and you'll be set. I've had this problem before, and thankfully it is not only fixable, but simple to solve as well.

You can always make fake visual connections if the gap bothers you. I make nonfunctional connections for demand Cap relief (road connections that sit at the edge and aren't connected to my main road network).

My highest is approximately 90,000, which I did, oh, last summer. Back then I was so bad I couldn't handle the traffic, so I got lazy and obliterated the city. Nowadays, I could've fixed it or at least made it manageable. But anyways, I'm hoping that in the near future, in my new ambitious project, I'll be able to hit at least 100,000 Sims in a city, maybe even 200,000.

I managed once to cram about 980,000 in a medium tile. It was part of a mega, pre-fab rushed cities of nothing but interlocking blocks of roads on a flat region. It had about 12,000,000 sims before I stopped and started another one. It's on the HDD from my old rig, though. So no pics.

"If you try to please everybody, you often times end up pleasing nobody, especially yourself. When somebody offers to do a favor for free, like making a mod for SimCity 4, you shouldn't be overly critical of something generously given to you. In other words, you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth." - Twilight Sparkle after playing SimCity

I'm not that good at making bigger cities, so it's actually kinda hard to imagine huge cities in SC4.

The city of City Center (yes, very creative name). 153,900 Sims currently live there. It is built on an almost completely flat large city tile. This isn't even my most appealing city. It is affected with a pathfinding problem that leaves many buildings abandoned as well as Prop Pox. (I have City Detail set to low on this city to minimize the effect.)
