Last month just before X-Mas I began the arduous  task of re-organizing my plugins folder and stopped playing the Riversmeet region because I wanted to play on that had varying terrain.  So, once the plugins re-organizing is done, I have a new map which is a bit smaller and features a pretty large 2x2 large tile sizes volcanic crater (real-world place, most likely from the Aleutian Islands in Alaska) and I'll be posting a photo of it later on sometime.

 

At the moment however, I am playing on a map that is and image made gray-scale plus some hand-drawn extras.  I'll let you figure out what the image was  that became this map.

Look at the shape/design of the hills.  It should begin to resemble something familiar.

For a while now I've been wanting to get back to SC4, and it's been a few years since I actually worked on a region.

After publishing my new "Parva Montes, et Flumina" map to the exchange which I intend to use myself, I began wondering about content to use for starters. It's the all too common problem: There's so much out there it's hard to comprehend the full menu, let alone decide what one would like.

So then Cori gave me some most excellent advice, and I quote:

Also suggesting by editing the grayscale image, I could crop out a small 2x2 large tiled sample from the full 12x12 map. Then not worry about things like which NAM options to use and what other items for the time being. Just start and consider it a trial run.

I really liked the sound of this way forward, so I looked at my map's rendered preview and thought the Daffy Duck shaped tile would be fitting. Not only for the novelty (it just happened to be generated!), but also for the varied terrain features.

The plan now is to get familiar with the gameplay again using minimal content, building plugins as I go along (if and when a need arises).

So you may see me posting a few more scenes very soon.

I've completed my farms, dirty industrial, and random commercial zones in the low lying areas of this part of my region. I've keep the position of this view the same so I can flip thru successive images to see the expansion. It's now time to re-position and continue in new tiles.

My plan is to first complete all tiles with low wealth, uneducated (but healthy) Sims. Then the expansion to manufacturing, isolated larger cities, and inter-tile highways. Once stage two is completed I'll go for the highest education in the denser areas, move to high tech, and grow a few skyscrapers.

I am still working on my region of Hebron.  I have almost brought every city up to the year 300.  In the meantime, I thought I would post a picture of my previous region En Gedi.  En Gedi was actually my first region in SC4 and I worked on it for about 6 years.  I was really pleased with how it turned out.  I really liked the the downtown area. The downtown had the Floyd Stock Exchange at the intersection of Time and Money avenues.  Also, En Gedi - Garden Point had the 'Star Treking Across The Universe Spaceport' (S.T.A.T.U.S). I also used some creative names for some of the outlying towns like....Dead Goat, Crazy Woman, Goat Pass, Sacrifice Plain (En Gedi means Spring of the Goat in Hebrew) to give a dry high plain feel.  However, I made this region before I started using RHW in Nam and my plug in folder was a lot smaller, so building diversity is not as great as it is in Hebron.  En Gedi reached 1.2 million sims and the year 700.  Well anyway, here is a picture of the region.  Enjoy.

Also this is partially a fantasy map since it incorporates parts of other real world maps, for instance, the island in the middle is based off of Montréal Island. Not sure what are the other real life regions are. Don't have the link to where I downloaded it but it was called Humboldt since I didn't bother to change the name when I installed it. I probably downloaded it off of SC4 Devotion LEX not Simtropolis.

I'm just restarting again after 10 years (just playing offline with the basic game). Lots of new things to learn, but at least my old nation survived on the PC

After downloading the game, and with help from here, I'm updating and learning the game again. I'm just practising around the edges at the moment, then perhaps build the big one. Then start again front scratch with a new nation. I like a lot of the ones I have seen in here, so will look for one that is downloadable and that I like.

Ever since I started organizing my plugins folder, I've been thinking about starting a new region and after searching I found a map to play on.  Only issue is naming said region, so I thought I'd post an image of it and see if anyone could perhaps toss a name out there that would fit the landscape.

Anything come to mind?

The northeast corner looks like the caldera of an ancient volcano. The natives living along the river at the time began calling the area Vallis Tonitrua. (Translated today as Thunder Valley.)

Indeed, the big water body on the north indeed looks like a even more ancient volcano caldera, so probably its waters are hot and have strange chemical properties: it could be of some strange colour (most likely yellow) and to taste very salty or even bitter and astringent. Expect also weird sediment formations and thousands of flamingos, but no big plants close to it.

Bitter lake or Yellow lake could be good names based on that.

As for the maps real-world location, it's part of a volcanic island somewhere in the Aleutians and both bodies of water is the Pacific.  It's available I believe on the STEX as Somewhere in the World 07 (SITW) under NHP.

In keeping with the volcano theme how about 'Ge Thiodes' (Land of Brimestone).  BTW, looks like a really nice region to build on.

Since I work on two or three regions at a time, I thought I'd show off my latest region, a map of San Louis Obispo/Morrow Bay California, a hilly, mountainous area with some rivers added in and a good coastline.  Right now, I only have 5 tiles developed, working on a sixth with laying out the freeway grid and some major avenues/boulevards. Mostly (about 90%) is all low density residential, medium-high density commercial and high density industrial.  One image is of the region view, the other is the regional road map.  City has 322,000 residents so far.

I think I made a ... little progress on my region since two years ago? I added that small coastal town in the middle left last year and have started drawing some roads in the middle plains section.

Wait a minute!!!  How did you know I was lazy?

 

Oh my.  I like what you did with the two maps.  That is an awesome region and if you want, you can upload that map because I like what you did with it and making it a cooler map than the two separate ones I made.  I have developed this map before, but with every new NAM that's released, I get bored with the maps I'm working on and go to a new one.  By the way, I got that dependency, did the cleanitol thing and still no field.  I'll have to show you some pics of what I have used in the game so far.  Sure helped with everything around them develop rather quickly.  They helped sprout some highrises along one of my freeways that I wasn't expecting to get.

Couple shots of my take on Vancouver.  Fell in love with the city after the 2010 Winter Olympics and started building shortly thereafter.  Been going for over 8 years on this region now.  A lot of the work has actually taken place within the last two or three years.  I played on a Mac (with the Aspyr disk!) for the first 5 or 6 years and with each subsequent Apple update the problems with a game as old as SimCity started to take their toll.  Finally got around to bootcamping Windows onto my Mac and have been flying ever since.

I then moved the region over and since I just reached 250,000 uneducated farmers, dirty industrial, and low paying commercial workers I decided to post an update.

As mentioned before I first want One Million low wealth Sims and they are building only on the lower two green elevations as depicted by the in game height topo data view. Once I reach that goal I'll then begin the more urban development in the higher, less fertile land represented by the brown colored heights.
