I thought about this, and am still thinking about it because though I've thought about this, I still have more thinking to do as to stop thinking about it would mean not to think.

Still working on the details of my latest region. In retrospective, I grew to like this region more than any other I crafted so far!

These are some very nice regions everyone. I wouldn't mind seeing some updates from some of the older posts.

In case you're wondering why it's all so green all of a sudden, there was a lot of rain over the past month.

O rly? And would that explain the change in water color too?
I suspect something far more nefarious... like secret government conspiracy involving soil & water dyeing. You know it's true

Actually, it's just a matter of the great god far above the moon changing terrain packs.

I guess that's because the mountains are too steep to really do anything with them. They just form some white spaces on the flat ground surface available for city-building, much like water. However, water bodies can be crossed by bridges, lined with seaports or promenades, etc. - what do you do with a sheer cliff, though? Not much. I guess if you had some gradual slopes, you might find more use for them - maybe as farm land, maybe for low-density residential. You could play with height levels, terraced areas, trenches, retaining walls... Wind farms may be an option, too, or some radio towers on hilltops. Or water towers. Or observation towers. Or camp sites. Some interesting applications for ploppable water also come to mind.

It's not easy to get mountains right for Simcity ("right" as in: realistic enough to look convincing, buildable enough to be interesting to play) - I'm still struggling with that aspect of the game myself.

Yeah, you should use SC4 Terraformer if you want to do your own region. That will allow you to terraform on a regional level rather than just a city level, and everything will look more coherent.

Thanks @metasmurf :).  I do strive for realism in my cities and regions.  As I build my cities I let the "lay of the land" guide me in what to build and where to build it.  Before I put down a road or zone a tract of land I will think to myself "would this be built here if it were in the real world".  I also tend to build my regions slowly starting from farms and rural communities that slowly expand into a metropalitan area.  This means that sometimes neighborhoods are bulldozed to make way for the interstate, businesses have to make room for the road to be upgraded to an avenue or sims start to complain because their quiet little neighborhood just got noiser because of the new airport.;)
