About This File

This DLL plugin activates two cheat codes that allow you to freely change the camera angles of the game. This allows you to use SimCity 4's 3D engine to its full potential and experience your cities from completely new angles. Just for fun.

It solves many of the issues of the original (now deprecated) 3D Camera Mod by pcwhiz24.

System requirements

  • SimCity 4, version 1.1.641 (the digital release) (more info)
  • Windows 10+ or Linux

Installation

  • Copy the DLL into the top-level directory of either Plugins folder (place it directly in <Documents>\SimCity 4\Plugins or <SC4 install folder>\Plugins, not in a subfolder).

Usage

Open the cheat console with CTRL + x and enter the CameraYaw or CameraPitch cheats:

  • CameraYaw <angle> - set the azimuth angle (counter-clockwise)
  • CameraYaw - reset the angle to the default of 22.5 degree
  • CameraPitch <angle> - set the altitude angle for all zoom levels (range: 0.0 to 90.0 degree)
  • CameraPitch <angle 1> .. <angle 5> - set the altitude angle for zoom levels 1 to 5 individually
  • CameraPitch - reset the angles to the default for each zoom: 30°, 35°, 40°, 45°, 45°

Examples

  • top down view: CameraPitch 85 and CameraYaw 0
  • isometric SC3k-style view: CameraYaw 45

Sometimes the effect only fully applies after changing zoom level or rotating the map, particularly on zooms 5 and 6.

Graphical glitches may occur, especially with the more extreme angles.

To avoid rendering the region view of a city from a non-standard angle, use Fast-Save (hold ALT + press Save button) or reset the angles to the default values before saving.

Can I screenshot my game using my own Android? I heard pcwhiz's mod bricked an iPhone.

Edit: yeah, this mod is real. I thought it's just a fool. It turns out, I'm a fool lmao!

Think about that for a second and you’ll realise quickly it can not be true.

Windows apps and dll files CAN NOT be ran as apps on Apple computers or under the heavily locked down walled garden of iOS. So if a phone got bricked, it was nothing to do with these files.

Also, how can taking a photo using your camera brick a phone? Just stop and think before posting things like this. Sadly people will believe all sorts of spurious junk and spreading myths is just unhelpful at best.

Now I am confused how this works, considering all models only have their 4 angles rendered?

All are 3d models, capable to be seen from many angles!

to my knowledge all 3d models are rendered from the 4 SC4 view angles and the 5 different zoom levels and then saved as images that get projected on the building LODs - I have gone through the process thousands of times...

Pure evil of you Memo to post on April 1st *

When the community ran out of April Fools jokes, the greatest joke left was to release a real 3D camera mod.  What a great honor to the Simtropolis tradition.  It's a little clunky since the game is kinda 2.5D, but here's to the future of DLL modding!

No they aren't, only S3D models have full geometry (incidentally, the ones I'm used to making). Which is why this mod shocks me.

Because the game is a mix of True 3D models and pseudo-3D ones (a typical BAT model). The LODs of an isometric model are essentially a shell with which the game 'pastes' textures upon. These textures are pre-rendered, so SC4 doesn't have to do that work in real time, which is a huge resource saver over true 3D. However the game itself has a full 3D engine and includes full 3D elements, mostly automata and transit models.

So it is possible to create this mod, however since most BAT models aren't really 3D, there are a lot of visual problems running outside the intended camera angles which as we've seen the past few days, can distort things greatly.

Unfortunately, there's nothing the SC4 modding community can do there.  All the power lies with Aspyr and Apple.

Apple's Hardened Runtime and Software Notarization requirements after Catalina basically prevent anything like DLL modding from existing on macOS, and actually killed off the little bit of support there had previously been for early DLL mods (i.e., SC4Fix) via simmaster07's SC4MacInjector.

While there are things Aspyr could do, at least in theory, to work around that, given that they won't even patch their port for proper nightlighting support after being hounded by the macOS SC4 userbase, it's extremely, extremely unlikely that they would do anything, especially since they'd have to get approval from Apple to make those sorts of changes.

You could try to run the Windows version of the game on macOS by using Wine or one of its wrappers like Whisky, RunOnMac, Wineskin, Crossover, etc.

SimCity 4 was definitely not made to be a true 3D game, so results may vary, :)

However, this mod is an innovation that many have been waiting for for many years. It is an amazing example of "thinking outside the box" approach. I can't remember anything this revolutionary since I first logged on this site.

Not all angles will look good, so it's not a "one size fits all" solution. It all depends on how well the buildings and objects used for a city have been rendered in the first place. However, it is a fantastic tool for creating city maps which, with the overhead mode, is easier than ever!

Wonderful idea and flawless execution. Congratulations to @memo!

You guys need the latest digital version for these new DLL mods to work, and only that version from now on. Check out this thread.

The Future of SC4 Modding: The Matter of Digital vs. Disc, and Windows vs. macOS in the DLL Era - SC4 Modding - Open Discussion - Simtropolis

I uninstalled my cd version for the GOG version, which was on sale for £3.99 in the UK last month just for this mod.
