About This File

Updated 2022.05.27
(By Cori & CB)

There are now four versions under the download button. One which has the Making Money, Big City, and Rush Hour tiles named and which include the original Maxis development. There is a bit of a bug with these inasmuch as the City Names and Mayor Name cannot be turned off in the Region View.

The 2nd, extra zip file has these 3 tiles as undeveloped and they do not have the aforementioned bugs.

Note: The first two files use the original standard Maxis tile layout.

Alternative Versions

3rd file:

Timbuktu as 4x4 (16 large tiles), also undeveloped, ready to copy in as a new region.

Per the request of @oakshaft in this thread, we've made a version of Timbuktu comprised of 16 large tiles (arranged as 4 x 4). There are no cities developed in any tile, so it's ready for you to create your own.

4th file:

The 3 tutorial tiles included, and a new region format with more Large tiles.

After @ASV7900 requested in this post for more Large tiles in their partially developed Timbuktu, we decided to make this option which that has the three Maxis developed tiles, but also with the rest having several Large tiles. This allows for more substantial areas per city, and also incorporates the island and bay areas for continuous development.

As follows:

Now back to the original verbiage:

Many peeps like to play the default tutorial region of Timbuktu. (That's the one which has the Maxis tutorials.) However, there are certain circumstances in which the game will get mad and use its copy of the original, unplayed version to overwrite all the hard work you've put into development whether that's after completing the tutorials or bypassing them. Ofc, one should still make backups of the regions periodically even with this being a completely separate region from the original Timbuktu.

So, this is a duplicate of the Timbuktu region made using SC4 Mapper and updating each tile's preview to the Maxis default terrain and water. (I also paused time in each city tile.)

Of the five city tiles that are named with tutorials attached, I've imported the three which have some development in them and then renamed those so they won't trigger the tutorial scripts. (The Getting Started and Terraforming tiles are blank anyhow so not named in this version.)

If you prefer the three which have build up to also be empty, you can use the Obliterate city option after loading the city tile. This will preserve the landscaping while resetting the date and funds as well as letting you name them how you prefer.

Note: If you keep the three named tiles you can rename them using the cheat: whererufrom
(See here for how to use cheat codes.)

This is a complete rendered and ready to play version so you can unzip it into a folder in your Regions folder with no other faffing about. Now, you may not like the region name I chose (Timbuktu Too) and that can be changed by editing the region.ini file. Said file is included in the .zip archive.

You can find it here:

02 Timbuktu Too Region INI Location.jpg

To edit it, open in your fav text editor. (Notepad.exe will work fine.)

It'll look like this:

[Regional Settings]
Name = Timbuktu Too
Terrain type = 0
Water Min = 60
Water Max = 100

Simply change the highlighted "Timbuktu Too" line to whatever name you'd like to see as the Region name.

The region does not have any trees placed in the empty tiles. You can add those with either the God Mode Tree brush or use the Flora Blast cheat code. See here for details on Flora Blasting:

So the names have something to do with the tutorial scripts, regardless of region?

Yes, in a way.

First is the Lua script in 0xFF7D81E7. That is the only Lua which is loaded at the Region level of the game. It sets up the name for the Default Region as well as creating the Tutorial Registry hierarchy. (It is also re-called when loading a city tile.)

Also, when entering a city tile, all the System Level Lua is run followed by the Game Level scripts. Of interest here is 0xFF263B45 which builds all of the tutorial data structures. I believe the following snippet of the code is what marries the specific tutorials to the city tile names:

--Getting Started
tutorial_registry : add_tutorial(hex2dec('abfad020'), 0, 'timbuktu')

--Terraforming
tutorial_registry : add_tutorial(hex2dec('ea5d6dc8'), 1, 'timbuktu')

--Making Money
tutorial_registry : add_tutorial(hex2dec('0bfdb71b'), 2, 'timbuktu')

--Big City
tutorial_registry : add_tutorial(hex2dec('cc02d3a3'), 3, 'timbuktu')

--What's New City
tutorial_registry : add_tutorial(hex2dec('2c12d0e9'), 4, 'timbuktu')

^ The numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, & 4 are for the sequence of the tutorials.

So, by renaming those three city tiles via the whererufrom cheat code after I imported them, that would alter their GUIDs and break the connection to the tutorial scripts.

At least that's my best guess why it worked to disassociate them. *;)

I see... so there's a LUA code that runs if the city has a certain display name, though AFAICT this would only happen if that tutorial hadn't already been done...

Those Lua scripts run regardless of the city or region. Then it's only in effect if the city tile matches the tutorial registry, but all the code is still in memory. (I've personally set a toggle flag in mine to prevent that, but it's more complex because CB and I also removed all except the Lua code stubs from SimCity_1.dat and then wrote our own controller to load them from external files.)

Thank you so much for this map *:thumb:

I´m an half old guy and I´ve played sc4 since beginning (2004).I come back to the game from time to time.

I still prefer to play without too many mods and no NAM.

New York has always been The region for me and now also,-especially Timbuktu 4x4.

Thanks.

Now a little wish *

Have you maked a 4x4 region out of that too?

-or would you??

I presume you are asking for the New York region to be all large tiles. I haven't done that, but I can prolly later today. I'll @Beep you when posting it so you'll know it's uploaded.

Edit: Now available here:

Hello everyone! I'd like to ask for some help. As you can see from below census screenshot, I'm about to hit a population cap on my R$$. How do I solve this / bring the cap down? What is the most effective way to do so?

My SC4 game is running with CAM + NAM, and this is the XL city tile (below Bigger City + Big City).

Thank you.
