Introduction / Overview

This new HKABT release is -barring some liberties at the base, mostly in context with pedestrian bridges- the accurate recreation of one of Hong Kong's most characteristic buildings, Lippo Centre. These twin towers with their highly complex shape and their reflective glass cladding broken into many surfaces are by far not the tallest in Hong Kong, topping out at 172 metres. However, since their erection in 1988, they have formed one of Hong Kong's landmarks of modern architecture. The towers have been nicked "Koala Tree" or "Koala Buildings" because their shape resembles Koala bears climbing two tree trunks.

This BAT is more than just another building for your plugins folder; it is also a medium to apply and demonstrate many new BATting techniques. The superior possibilities of 3DSMax were taken to new levels; a structure like this would not have been possible with gmax. Reflections, bump maps on the windows, a waterfall made from particles and an entirely new nightlighting technique are just some of the novel elements introduced with this building. This way, it is almost a feasibility study - but one you can enjoy in your city just like any other building, without the slightest drawbacks.

The model was made by paulvmontfort and is, in fact, the third (and quite probably last) attempt at recreating this building. SimFox contributed many new techniques, refinements, additions and ideas, so that the model you see is actually the result of a teamed effort.

For the game, Lippo Centre has been modded as a medium-wealth commercial office building (CO§§) in order to help alleviate the definite shortage of good CO§§ BATs for SC4. Sitting on a rather unique 7x4 lot, it provides 5,250 jobs. A ploppable version with jobs and a regular landmark are also available and included in this package.

In total, the following versions are available:

  • Ploppable landmark (7x4 lot)
  • Ploppable functional CO$$ (7x4 lot)
  • Growable CO$$ building (7x4 lot)

As usual, you will find the menu icons of ploppable and landmark versions conveniently grouped together, the ploppable version being marked with "CO§§".

I doubt I will ever use this, and I doubt that I've ever been as confused as I am now in my life. That doesn't stop this from being good, though. It's exceptional. More than that, even; it's an artistic triumph. 10/10, two thumbs up.

Wow. You guys should show this to the SCS developers as an example of the visual realism and simple elegance we demand in the next installment of the Simcity franchise.

I think we may need a new rating system based on this model. You've set a new standard of excellence on every SC4 exxchange that there is. Every other new prject should be judged compared to this. I can't wait to place this somewhere in a city. Thank you so much for your hard work. It really shows in this building, and the SC4 community is very fortunate to have you among us.

Every so often something comes along that sets a new benchmark for what is possible in SC4. This exceptional model is an example of that.

Now this is using 3ds max 9 to its greatest potential, well maybe if it also had some ik constraints and all that other fancy animation stuff *cough*video... but for simcity it's perfect in every way.
